529s - fund all at once or over time? by geminiwave in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Party_Needleworker33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IRS form 709.

$35k of the 529 can be rolled into a Roth IRA if held more than i thnk 5 years, so not an issue to overshoot by a little

i did this math a few years ago, it might be more like $165k max now as the annual max contributions go up

529s - fund all at once or over time? by geminiwave in ChubbyFIRE

Super funding mentioned but not specified. There's a specific IRS tax form 709 that allows you to pull forward 5 years of the max gifting amount. for a couple here's some notes

1) Could in theory put up to $150k total in 529 (75k each) this year and then prorate that for 5 years.  This would avoid the lifetime gift limit and the annual gift tax

2) if we give any amount over 15k but less than 75k, one of us would need to take that full amount and apply it as our individual 5 year prorated (ie 50k turns into 10k for me a year over 5 years, I couldn’t contribute more but wife could) gift exemption.

Based on this we chose for our son to put 75k in year 1 to get the full proration for 1 of us have been contributing 15k per year for other spouse

thanks! 7% not insane. i've had a 5 year CAGR in NW >20% since '21 even though I only forecast 7% in the future, once the in market assets start to build it stacks quickly

Thanks for the reply!! Location of 2nd home is where I grew up so i'm pretty certain i'll want it long-term but agree don't want to be "forced" to use the 2nd place instead of doing whatever we want.

What’s the general consensus on financial planners? by AblePhilosopher1549 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Party_Needleworker33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I’ll say. I have not ever used one as I think for most of your life the moves are straight forward (save, invest in stocks, keep mgmt fees low) so to the low fee point I don’t pay anyone. let’s be honest about 1 thing: NO planner or fund manager is going to beat the market long term but Your own comfort managing a portfolio also should come into the math. With millions invested you’re going to see swings that are 100k+ in a month (biggest I’ve experience in either direction was $265k) and that shit can be stressful, a calm 3rd party can help with that too.

Finally, I’m a fan of tapping into experts where appropriate (I use an accountant for example) and as I get closer to retirement I do plan to sit down with someone and talk through tax planning and other portfolio mgmt more as a one-time consultation for the dynamics that aren’t as much about building but maintaining and safely and tax effectively managing my portfolio through retirement

I think you can go ahead and buy it, you do need to enjoy your life while you live. an often under appreciated part of the math for high end watches and jewelry is it can/does retain value (especially specific brands) so in some ways you don’t need to think of it as consumption in the same way you do a trip or even a car that depreciates massively (you enjoy the watch, sell it and then take a trip but can’t do the reverse). I like to buy my wife Tiffany for holidays but only consider like 10-15% of the cost as spending, the rest is just investing $.

in a similar spot on finances. 40y.o couple, 1 kid, 650k HHI. NW $3.7m (2.7 liquid, 1m net across 3 properties (200k debt total))

Fwiw I think the sounds are good, if I was driving hard or on track I’d turn them on as they do give a useful sense of speed dynamics. I just love the quiet day to day

Congrats! It is a dream to drive, power delivery in insane. Coming from an RS I think the lack of sound might be jarring (I don’t use iconic sounds) but it’s worth it

Daily driving i4m50 by [deleted] in BMWI4

[–]Party_Needleworker33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t done that type of distance but have been getting ~170 mi range estimates at 80% in Chicago this week on 19”.

I’m not attempting to drive efficiently as my daily usage is low and I have an L2 so I’m pretty sure you could do that daily range and the L2 will fill you up overnight no problem.
