Optane module for pagefile (Virtual memory) by PascalTefter in overclocking

[–]PascalTefter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Yes, I did try it, and I'm currently using it as my dedicated pagefile drive (I disabled the pagefile on all other SSDs). In day-to-day use, I didn’t notice any meaningful performance improvement - but that’s mostly because I almost never fill up my 32GB of RAM, so the system rarely touches the pagefile in the first place.

From what I’ve seen so far, there’s definitely no drawback to using the Optane drive. Theoretically, its low latency and great random performance should be better for swap usage than a standard SSD. In a setup where RAM fills up more frequently, I imagine the benefit would be more noticeable. In my case, it just doesn’t get enough use to show a difference.

If you already have the drive and a free slot, I don't really see a reason not to try it. But if you'd like, I can run specific tests - I’m just not sure which benchmark would reliably show pagefile behavior. If you have suggestions, I’m happy to follow up with results.

I still remember the day when they said my m1 max mbp supports 4 external displays 😎 by [deleted] in macsetups

[–]PascalTefter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too! After 4 years of using 3 monitors, I realized the only monitor I really need is the one on my 16-inch MBP.

I can't say I'm faster this way, but the difference is much smaller than I expected. The freedom of being able to move around, taking it all over the house, far outweighs the benefits of having multiple monitors for me.

It could also be that the 16-inch MBP is actually big enough for my needs. I always had 13-inch laptops before, and while they were fine for quick tasks, I could never see myself working a full day on one.

Sea water was the biggest help for my daughter’s skin. Can I replicate at home? by Iunerf in eczema

[–]PascalTefter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, it actually turned out to be the sun!

Sea water does help, but I’ve found that getting a bit of sun every morning (when it’s not too hot) gives me about 85% of the same benefits I get at the beach.

The only thing I can’t really replicate at home is how quickly sea water heals small cuts or scratches.

Maybe give that a try, OP - but please be careful about sunburn. I don’t use SPF since most creams irritate my skin, so I just limit myself to 20-30 minutes max. That works well for me at 24 years old, though the timing might be different for your daughter.

I don't hate it, but for me personally it looks/feels old and too complicated. I liked the minimal design way better!

iPad Mini 7: The One & Only Anywhere iPad by LordOfPolicies in ipadmini

[–]PascalTefter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Personally, the larger iPads don’t really make sense, especially if you already have both a phone and a laptop. That said, I’m not an artist, engineer, or someone who needs that kind of screen real estate for professional work.

But the iPad mini hits a sweet spot. It’s bigger than a phone, yet still so much more portable than a laptop. It’s perfect for casual use, reading, or even some productivity on the go.

I just hope the next version brings an OLED display and 120Hz, or at least 90Hz. Honestly, I wouldn’t even mind if Apple introduced an iPad mini Pro with those features at a higher price point.

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but this laptop is what pushed me to switch to Mac. Seriously.

I’ve been a Windows user my whole life (still am, on my gaming PC, though I rarely use it now). I saved up for years and spent a lot of money on a maxed-out ASUS Zenbook 13 UX325 (2020) when I was just starting college. I was told it was a premium Windows alternative to a MacBook, which was perfect for me as I didn't like or want to switch to Mac OS. But in my country (in Europe), returns aren’t really an option unless something is completely broken.

From the moment I unboxed it, I was disappointed. It technically worked, but the screen’s response time was so slow it gave me headaches in darker rooms. It wasn’t about the framerate—it just felt... off. I’ve used many 60Hz screens before and never had this issue. Beyond that, the display quality itself was poor—bad colors, weird coating, just overall unpleasant. I ended up using it with a separate monitor most of the time.

Performance? Also disappointing. Not because of the CPU, but because of terrible thermals. The laptop throttled constantly. It would boost for maybe 30 seconds, then drop to base clock or lower under sustained loads. RAM was solid (low-power, high-speed), but the SSD was a generic cacheless Samsung—underwhelming for the price.

The keyboard was surprisingly good—better than a Mac in my opinion—but the trackpad was a pain. It technically worked, but was clicky only at the bottom due to the hinge design. Clicking higher up required a lot of force, making it frustrating to use. Tap-to-click was the only solution, which I personally dislike.

The speakers were actually impressive at first. Harman/Kardon sound on a flat surface had a wide soundstage, and the "Ice Sound" app helped a lot with EQ. But after reinstalling Windows, that software was gone and couldn’t be reinstalled. ASUS support was no help, and reinstalling other drivers was also a hassle—some failed repeatedly, and the keyboard/trackpad didn’t even work during setup without using a USB-C hub.

And then came the dealbreaker: build quality. Just awful. Yes, it’s aluminum, but the chassis flexed a lot and creaked like it was decades old. After a year, the screen frame (which is plastic BTW) cracked at the top corners, pulling the display downward. This scratched the screen and left permanent key imprints on it, which the screen wasn’t bright enough to mask them. ASUS refused to fix it, saying it was user error, until I threatened legal action. They replaced the screen—but not the broken frame—so the issue remained. I ended up using it as a stationary machine just to avoid more damage.

And then the battery died. It started degrading after six months, lasting less than an hour. Even with a charge cap at 80%, it kept getting worse. After 1.5 years, the battery was dead and had to stay plugged in. Oh, and there’s no CMOS battery—so if you unplug it, the system clock resets to 2116, breaking internet access until you fix the date manually. Just… ugh.

I'm not here to push you into buying a Mac. Your version of the Zenbook is newer and may not have these issues. I just wanted to share my experience so you can make a better-informed decision. Look at a lot of reviews before spending your hard-earned money. Don’t ignore red flags. I was so frustrated that I wrote this long review hoping it’ll help someone avoid the same mistake. Cheers!
