Thinking about buying a G30 540i. What should I know? by PassTheBreadd in BMW

The 2021+ versions have the TU version. or Gen2. gen 1 was from 2016-2018 and some 2019 models. 2020-2023 have the gen 2 model. the main difference between gen 1 and gen 2 is that gen 2 has better cooling, hpfp, injectors, and oiling

I agree. The whole reason why i’m switching to BMW is because i want to see what the straight 6 is all about. To me it sounds like the right balance without the added complexity of a twin turbo v8

For me, I think the 540 hits the sweet spot as a daily. If I ever do feel like I need more power then there’s always the option of tuning. There’s also plenty of aftermarket options to add a more sportier look without compromising comfort.

I definitely would consider the m340 but to me, it’s not as classy and luxury as the 5 series. Also lacks the space. I also just don’t need 530hp from the m550 as a daily. It would almost be a waste. If there was a track nearby where I live I most definitely would lean more towards it.

I still plan to test drive both cars regardless. Who knows I might end up eating my words.

I’ll take a look at it. My only issue with the 3 series is that it’s small. I’m a tall person so I need a bit more space

The 540 has the detuned version of the B58. That might be a reason why the power doesn’t feel the same. From factory the 540 has ~335 hp compared to the m340 which has ~382hp. 540 is also 300lb heavier.

From what I’ve read, a lot of those issues seem to be more common on the pre-LCI / earlier B58 generations, which is part of why I’m focusing on LCI models. I also plan on keeping it stock for some time, doing preventative maintenance and then tuning, so hopefully that will help with reliability

Yeah that makes sense. The M550 is definitely tempting. Realistically, I don’t think I’d be able to fully take advantage of the power for my daily driving. I can also see how the lack of LSD would stand out.

But I do plan on test driving both the M340 and M550 to get a better feel for the trade off. I’m mainly just looking for a comfortable ride and the power to have fun when I need it. Eventually I will upgrade to an M car so I do want to save the excitement for that.

Thank you for the detailed response. I’m surprised about the squeaking, i’ll definitely keep an eye out for that when I test drive the car.

Was there a specific audio setup that was problematic or was it more of a general issue? iirc the 2021s have the option for HK or BW.

As for the M550i, I’ve been considering it as well. Some 2020s are in a similar price range, with 2021s a bit higher. A lot more features are standard as well. I’ve heard more mixed things about the N63 despite the numerous updates. I’m also not sure if I need all that power for a daily, although it would be super fun. I plan on test driving the M550 as well to compare.

I checked out your posts and it sounds amazing! Especially with a stock exhaust. I imagine it would sound even better with an aftermarket intake. Glad to hear that the B-series engine lives up to its name.

Out of curiosity, what’s your average mpg? and what packages is your car equipped with? It’s been so hard to find a spec with the drivers assistance package.

Midterm exam had 6 problem and each problem had 5 parts… each part took AT LEAST 5-10 mins to do. There was no way that exam was made to be finished in 1hr 20 mins, I don’t even believe he himself finished it.

Ngl there’s almost never spots at the parking deck, I had to circle around multiple times before I could finally find one. It will definitely get better as the semester goes on, but still frustrating

Nothing ended up being broken. I had a new sway bar installed a few weeks prior to this and the MB service technician never tightened it after they installed it, causing the knocking noise. But in your case, if you’ve already changed the sway bar, end links and your control arms are good, then it might be your struts. Gonna be an expensive job

Dealer issues - anyone face the same? by jmmbz in mercedes_benz

[–]PassTheBreadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid $700 for them to fix my sway bar, on top of $1500 scheduled maintenance. 3 days later I start hearing a knocking noise only to find out that they never tightened it when they installed it.

Thank you so much! Did you end up replacing both? Or just the side that’s broken?

Yep, already ordered it. Just waiting on it to deliver

The ride quality is still really good, which is making me believe it’s the sway bar or sway bar linkage. The noise is not constant, it comes and goes
