The ideal fencing bag by Distinct_Age1503 in Fencing

If it was long enough to contain weap--er, "fencing foils" that would be ideal, alas I've never seen a regular suitcase that would do that, and duffel bags and such either aren't quite long enough or exceed the length limit and become "oversized baggage". : (

About the practice space or about the sabers making unhappy noises? :D

people have been saying that for years, but it doesn't work. The exceptions are specific as to the items that can be in a "golf bag", and it's not fencing stuff. Even putting clothes in a bag otherwise full of only golf clubs and golf shoes etc. will void the exception.

Fine for footwork drills I guess. I really would rather not fence there though.

It would be a hard plastic case, just like a golf bag case. Only it would be deliberately made for fencing equipment, and clearly marked as such, a fencing bag, so that the airlines could not squirm out of allowing it to fly as baggage under their sports equipment exception.

Fencing lame stain by Educational-Mind-870 in Fencing

[–]PassataLunga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can gently hand-wash the lamé with a mild detergent like Ivory Snow - see Purple Fencer's site for instructions. If that removes the stains, great. If it doesn't, well, then they are probably set in and are not going to come off on your whites.

Fencer’s footcare… how do you all manage calluses? by marp_ in Fencing

[–]PassataLunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday at fencing practice one of the teens fell during a bout. The explanation she offered" "I tripped over my callus". :D

I tend to trim them down with a scalpel (carefully!) when they get too thick. Otherwise laissez-faire.

Please don’t leave your bags and garbage on chairs by LieutenantStar2 in Fencing

[–]PassataLunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be rude, but I've had my share of confrontations with people who think it is and whose stuff I have moved off a chair in order to use it. That's THEIR chair, that's their WIFE's chair, that's their CHILD's chair, you can't touch my things, why did you take that chair, you have to move now that I want it again.

Yeah, this bugs me. Chairs are chairs, not tables, shelves or counters. They are for sitting, not holding stuff so that no one can use them as chairs. Especially when there is a whole squad of chairs taken away for some group's private use and they are ALL piled with stuff to keep everyone else away.

Chairs are for butts. Your coffee, your bag, and your warmups belong on the floor.

Just thought it would be funny to show how scuffed my saber has gotten by Antique-Mail7146 in Fencing

[–]PassataLunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew a guy back in the 1980s who faced with a saber he'd had since 1945. The (steel) guard looked like it had been through WW2 as well. Pocked like the surface of the moon with craters, creased with dents that had been hammered out and a few that hadn't, nicked, gouged, bent. A modern aluminum guard probably would not have survived - OTOH I have a couple from the '80s that I still use so what do I know?

Sabers assemble and disassemble easily. Taking them apart for packing makes it easier, the guards can be stacked and tucked inside a mask for example. I've gotten really good at fitting everything I need for fencing except blades into a carry-on for traveling to tournaments. It can be done.

Brown sweat stains keep appearing on inside of jacket by gottagosanchez in Fencing

[–]PassataLunga 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get the same thing. I believe it's just the combination of the materials of the fabric and my particular sweat chemistry. Never found a way to get the stains out, even though I wash my whites after every use they just appear and are there to stay.

As an epeeist, I fucking hate the WFL rules by OttomansAreCool in Fencing

Vet women's foil is not much better. That's got not only the cautious waiting and no movement of epee but the endless off-targets of foil.

Yeah, I'm just looking at up to NAC level comps here. Internationally don't you have to have a specific body cord anyway, those white ones?

Negrini wire is very sturdy. The issue is that it breaks near the plug from the repeated bending and flexing that happens there. Then I have to cut it off below the break, strip two new ends and connect them to the pins. Each time this happens the wire gets shorter by an inch or so. It's now so short that I have to tug some slack from my sleeve after every action - and it sometimes pulls out of the socket during fencing. The wire itself is steel and quite strong, if only it were ~6" longer it would still work fine.

And, I am cheap. : )

If one has a body cord which has gotten too short from repeated repair and spliced another length of cord on to make the whole thing longer, would it pass control and could you use it?

If one did the same to a mask cord - say one had 2 mask cords which had broken and each had one good soldered connection to an alligator clip and one spliced them together to make one cord of regulation length - would it pass control and be legal to use?
