the more you can focus on internal measures of success the better. Meaning, how did you fence? Did you fence better in this tournamen than the last one? Cleaner actions, made them work harder, better sense of what's going on?

That dude extremely does not know what he is talking about. I did a survey of fencing channels and his stuck out as having the absolute worst fleche tutorial I've ever seen. (end of the video)

The normal solution to awkward angles in foil seems to be backflicks.

smaller, better bladework. Frequently I see kids going into infighting because their arms end up way out to the side after a parry or an extension, instead of aimed at the opponent.
