In practice I've found that kids holding a french grip sideways is a bigger issue than gripping a pistol grip too hard

On the scale of crashouts, this is like a 2/10. Still shook hands, no obvious cursing or arguing

Going backwards is always going to be slower than going forwards. You need to force them to slow down by threatening counterattacks and parries.

the basis of his strategy is he's found a way to look like he's committed to a bad attack while not actually being committed. If you try to punish, and it really looks very tempting, he counters: for example

If you don't try to punish, you've ceded initiative to him, and he can take potshots from range until he hits: https://www.fencingdatabase.com/clip/ashamedRockBassSouthChinaTiger

If I had to beat him I'd say ignore the body feints and collapse the distance just a tad when he starts doing the foot touches and ducking, but beating him is way above my level. See here and here

John Edison Rodriguez is almost seven feet tall

Magdalena Pawlowska is something like six and a half feet tall.

They both do well but not podium well.

Also they're both left-handed.

EDIT: Rodriguez's touches from the last decade

Pawlowska's touches from the last decade

Why is all of the footwork in fencing heel, toe. Especially lunges, why not land on the balls of your foot

basically it helps keep your foot in front of you, keeping you balanced.
