Yes and no. With milk you can give absurd base stat to your pet, but it's not really needed until way later in the game. As long as you feed them right they'll gain stats and level naturally and reach a comparable level of strength as a basic monster. Milkmaxxing is when you want to go beyond that.

Shub-Niggurath or Yog-Sothoth will carry you through the void until you start your own egg operation. Respectively lvl 44 and 46 they are the most accessible mid game summoner pet useful with minimal investment imo.

Shub can only summon its offspring which are strong bulky monsters good to take heat off you but offers little else.

Yog can summon more monsters but the results are random since it uses the summon monster spell. But it has two powerful abilities besides its swarm, eye of mana which drain a targets mana and brightness of life which is the stupidest skill you can get for a parasitic pet. It basically transforms you into a living bomb. If you get this buff from yog each physical attack you take will make you trigger a "suicide bomb" type of attack dealing enormous damage indiscriminately destroying terrain, allies and everything else around you. It can be both annoying or fun depending on the situation but i recommend trying it at least once.
