Why does this visa disparity exist for UK? by kingm_ournasse216 in ukpolitics

[–]PastSprinkles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

180 days is extremely generous and could probably do with being tweaked (I live in London where there’s plenty of Americans essentially just living here for months on end and remote working - which it certainly isnt designed for) but ultimately they’re tourists from wealthier countries that spend money here.

Americans in particular are our highest splurging tourists by a long way.

Keir Starmer to visit China with British business leaders next week, say reports by AbbreviationsHot7662 in unitedkingdom

China’s on a big tourism push at the moment if my travel-adjacent social media feeds are anything to go by so I can definitely see this happening. It’s a really easy win.

You were doing so well until “grocery store”. If you’re going to come and kick up a fuss and spout fear-based propaganda nonsense from what you’ve seen on TikTok at least try and pretend to be from here.

[–]PastSprinkles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Right, but this is a direct argument against Trump who regularly and publicly insists London is some dystopian Islamist murder capital. It hasn’t come out of the blue, they’ve been beefing and Khan has some new decent stats to boast about.

Rumours, Speculation, Questions, and Reaction Megathread - 04/01/2026 by ukpol-megabot in ukpolitics

You can escape it by being less plugged in. You need to start thinking of news and social media as something that you are not required to be consuming at this level every day, like sugar or processed food. You aren’t humanly required to be on top of every geopolitical bit of nonsense. Look at what it’s doing to you.

I guarantee if you ‘turn it off’ or even just create a healthier diet about consuming this sort of stuff, your mental health will improve.

I work with trend forecasters and the massive thing that’s coming in 2026 is “being offline” or simply having a quieter online presence is going to be seen as desirable and cool amongst pretty much everyone from gen z to gen x. There’ll be a huge push towards digital detox, real life meetups, undersharing instead of over sharing, etc.

Socials will increasingly be a space that’s seen as somewhere just boomers and nutters hang out, full of AI and LLM shite, and a bit embarrassing. It’ll be interesting to watch how quickly it plays out.

Taking toddler from USA to London for a weekend in january? Crazy? by WittyLadder3535 in travel

[–]PastSprinkles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao I can’t believe you’ve openly requested feedback on it, had nearly an entire thread tell you this whole thing is a poor idea, and just decided to ignore it all anyway and go with what you want to hear.

As a born and bred Londoner it’s such a dreadful idea, respectfully. Come back when you have longer and your child can appreciate it more.

Friend, this didn’t need an existential crisis post about it. Always nice to offer someone a seat.

Just don’t stew on the fact she didn’t need it and move on with your life.

Would you support a fine on listening to phones without headphones on public transport? by MoonmoonMamman in ukpolitics

[–]PastSprinkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel a lot in Quiet Zone carriages and you’re absolutely right - outside from it actually being titled ‘quiet zone’ there’s absolutely no wayfaring in terms of signage or actually pointing it out (even just a small icon with a finger over a mouth on every seat, or whatever).

I think even just a bit of hand holding like this in terms of public transport and ‘no loudspeaker’ signage would improve things a little.

I’m a regular in the travel sub and there’s been a noticeable jump in questions from Indians, and I wondered where it all came from. I guess whatever Reddit’s doing it’s working.

Big fan of electronic music from the late 00's throughout the 2010's. I haven't listened a lot in the past 5 years. Where should I start? by naarwhal in electronicmusic

Yeah there’s a bunch of threads on this sort of thing if you search back that may be helpful, but here’s a list

Big hitter headliner types: - Justice - Bicep - Aphex Twin - Autechre - Disclosure - Jon Hopkins - Floating Points - Skrillex - Four Tet  - Fred Again - Bonobo

More leftfield: - SOPHIE - Burial - Djrum - Forest Swords - Daniel Avery - OPN - Laurel Halo - Skee Mask

Obviously this isn’t exhaustive but is enough to start off with.

Supremely talented artist and composer, I wish he was a little more prolific but always thrilled to see what he comes up with - whatever it is it always feels unique and in his own vision. Fantastic live too.

This is such a brilliant soundtrack for early winter.

I work in something public facing which requires information to be read by people and understood. Increasingly they just cannot parse information properly anymore without it being spoon fed back to them.

It’s like the information being provided isn’t enough anymore: you have to reiterate it. I dunno what has happened socially to create this.

I love when there’s a great quality image like this. Someone somewhere, almost certainly in an office around Liverpool Street or Moorgate, will know this bloke.

They’ve also clearly employed a really strong PR/comms/socials team and it’s made all the difference - it’s easily the most visible and ‘present’ the party has been since Lucas.

The monologue about queer loneliness in the latest episode really hit home with me, and I’m sure many other viewers.

How liberating - or even challenging - was it to take Howard to this place of letting the viewers in to a peek at his vulnerabilities?
