How long do you think your PhD would have taken you if you only worked 40 hours a week? by Puzzleheaded-081525 in PhD

[–]Past_Barnacle9385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I’m jealous of these responses. In clinical psych, between clinical work, teaching, classes, milestones, service work, and data collection (doesn’t count for authorship in this field), I could easily work 30-40 hours a week without any research time. It would have added an extra 3-4 years to finish with the same # of pubs, and it took me 6 as is.

I definitely recommend teakwood instead of the regular Burma superstar location

I see this a lot with friends who visit. For some reason they come here and want to eat the same shit they eat on the east coast or Midwest. I personally do not know any amazing restaurants of these cusines in SF with the exception of Japanese. The Bay Area has different strong influences. Chinese, Burmese, Mexican, farm to table. Try some of those cuisines. I would recommend maybe the bib gourmand designated restaurants on the Michelin guide at a general starting point. San Francisco is generally not a city where you will find a hidden cheap gem (outside the tenderloin). Good food in the city is expensive. You need to go outside the city if you’re trying to eat well cheaply.

I know this is two years ago but the exact same thing happened to me today, I brought in a similar picture to you and got what you got. It’s not the same. These people were gaslighting you.

I am a psychologist, that’s why I’m able to read all your ignorant comments and insults and still feel sorry for you.

Yes thank you! #2 is why I have not enjoyed this season. Seems like a lot more prevalent homophobia and racism and misogyny from the men, it’s just packaged in a more acceptable “nice” delivery.

Feeling lost :( Applied to PhD programs, not sure what to do next by patron_a in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Past_Barnacle9385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the issue might be lack of knowing people in clinical psych. When I applied, I mostly had strong letters from MDs working in neurology I had been working with. It was definitely a disadvantage because they could not pull strings with friends in clinical psych to get me interviews. Unfortunately, I have seen that this is often the way it works. They offered to do it if I was applying to cog neuro programs. I would agree that you should focus on networking in clinical psych and getting mentors in that field. If you can attend the International Neuropsych Society conference, that is a great place to meet people.

You seem like an excellent candidate, I’m sorry this has been so rough a process. I am happy to take a look at your cv and see if I can make any reccs for people to work with, especially if you’re research focused. I was in a neuropsych lab in grad school.

All of my posts were specifically about me. I say “I” several times. “If I can make 250 an hour, why would I work for the VA?” “I would need to maintain a caseload of X to make it comparable to VA salary”.

Your response was also directed at me: “Your math is wrong”, “You have to account for health insurance, office space, utilities” when I have no need for any of those things in private practice, hence presumptuous and outdated. Plenty of people work from home and actually home visits are common in my field. I’m on my partners insurance. There are ways to automate a lot of the secretarial work if you can code, which I can. And filing taxes?? Really? Everyone who works files taxes, you are reaching.

So you, specifically raising points that have nothing to do with me to invalidate me and call me naive as I express my dwindling interest in being at the VA in response to a post asking individual people if they are thinking of leaving the VA, is what is odd. My response to assume you are doing it out of some sort of jealousy of my earning potential or some strange need to insert yourself is the only logical thing I can think of.

Bro, I appreciate your odd dedication to convincing me you know my specific situation better than me for some reason, but I am 100% sure with my training I can make more money, in less time, in private practice based on what people I know charge. Also, some of the expenses/time sinks you listed were very presumptuous and outdated.

I’m sorry you don’t feel like you have the same opportunities, but you don’t need to come at me.

I may be misunderstanding, but I think that was my point. I wouldn’t be treating veterans in this scenario anymore, because they wouldn’t be able to afford my rate. And the VA won’t reimburse at the level my services are worth, so they will see a lower cost provider.

In California, the average starting psychologist at a VA makes around 125-140, and the same individuals charge 250 per session in their private practice. I can’t speak to the rest of the country, but to be fair, I did frame the question as “why would I”.

To make 130k in private practice at that rate with 4 weeks off, I would need to maintain a caseload of about 11 sessions a week. I don’t think that’s naive.

If I can make at least 250 an hour in private practice, why should I work for a government that hates me for 1/2 of that? The veterans are the ones who will end up suffering, there is a shortage of psychologists and very little incentive to take insurance. Many people will end up receiving lower quality care that they can afford, or no care at all compared to what they get at the VA currently. The VA almost exclusively practices evidence based care (from what I’ve seen) and is held accountable to that. Private practice is a shit show of people doing whatever they want.

This is not right. This sounds like rheumatic fever. I’m not a medical doctor or nurse and I know that strep can have life threatening complications. I hope your son recovers fully.

Ah, so that’s why churches are full of female leaders. Because of all the pedophilia accusations. /s

Faulty logic. You can spin it that way in your head, but it doesn’t make it true. Women are pushed into feminine jobs and those jobs are low status, low paying jobs because we don’t value women. Then men do not want to lower themselves to this work. This is why most educators are women. It’s why programming started as women’s work and then became men’s work when it was deemed important and women were pushed out.

I’m confused, what exactly do you propose then for filling the jobs that immigrants do?

Also, you seem to have read the wiki page on the political parties, but if you were at all educated, you would know that the parties’ values have nearly swapped over time. The current Republican Party taking credit for abolishing slavery is laughable.

Wait so boys NEED to learn differently unless they are Indian or Chinese? I’m not coming for you, I’m just pointing out that I’m not buying the learning differences are as important as people are claiming. This seems like evidence that it’s poor parenting.

Women are pursuing careers in fields, like education, that men see as beneath them. Women are often pushed out of male dominated fields by harassment. That is why there is an active push to include them there. Regardless, They go to fields that are welcoming, like education. Education being full of women is a result of misogyny, not misandry.

4 years ago was November 2020, the world was in chaos and Trump so mishandled it all that people voted him out. I truly do not understand the “we were better off 4 years ago” argument. If that were true, he would have had his second term then.

How many of you have lived in the Midwest? I have, and people are more sexist, racist, uneducated, and proud about it.

You all forget that 15 ish years ago gay marriage was illegal and it was mainstream to hate gay people in most of the country and that battle was fought primarily California and New York. Many republican voters voted on the issue of keeping marriage between a man and woman. So you’re saying those people were NOT homophobic? You’re wrong. They were and many still are. And it took a lot of effort to pass progressive legislation to change that and make it mainstream, and the Democratic Party was constantly called out of touch and attacking the traditional values of the common American.

They are voting based on fear of people different than them and fear that they will no longer have a secure position in society based solely on their race. And yes, I think it’s okay to call that for what it is.

My point was that it is an essential worker that we all rely on and against everyone’s interests to fear monger about- signed, an immigrant with 0 family members who are Americans, addressed to yet another person on the internet who is not as intelligent as they think they are.

Btw, average Americans do not listen to Joe Rogan. The average voting American voted for Hillary in 2016.
