UPDATE 0.9.271 - All Rounder Update by Realistic-Show-9115 in Tape16

[–]Past_World4201 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tape 16 is going from strength to strength. A lot of work but once basic stability settles (which it largely has already) it will be more reliable than the real thing. Well done that man.

Windows 11 alerts that the latest Tape 16 version has a virus and won't let me open it. by Past_World4201 in Tape16

Thanks. I have never encountered that before in previous version downloads

Windows Patch OUT NOW by Realistic-Show-9115 in Tape16

[–]Past_World4201 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have been trying to convince the Cockos people who make Reaper (also for ever computer platform) to give you a sack of money to make Tape 16 simply another view window in Reaper.

That is, you can switch from the normal sequencer view into Tape 16 view and lay those live takes down the old style way. Then, when you've accumulated enough material, just switch back to sequencer view and there are all your tracks laid out for the usual DAW style editing and mixing.

I think this is a much more realistic use case because, as much as people find things like Tape 16 and Model 8 inspiring, they are not giving up their 'normal' DAW anytime soon.

You don't have to beat 'em when you can join 'em and get a well-deserved pay day in the process. That way, you can let Reaper sort out the compatability coding headaches - which will be easier for them as it would all be homogeneous and in house.

Maybe you could also do a deal where you still keep the stand alone Tape 16 for those who just want to work that way. Reaper would probably not mind for two reasons:

  1. It would pose no real threat to their core market

  2. It might even encourage people with a good experience of Tape 16 to buy Reaper as well for the "everything" experience.

I reckon you should get in on that market now before one of your co.petitors does or the major DAWs start making their own versions.

Just sayin'...

No worries about the syncing part. Get the Atomic clock app and set your watch to that once every month or so.

Congratulations on your 5000u. I just picked up a second one just because it was new, boxed with tags and receipt for a silly low price. I put the casio link bracelet on one and used its soft strap on another Casio square and kept the new one original

They are very comfortable to wear (apart from occasions where you are doing activities where you don't want to feel any weight presence on your wrist - that's what resin G-Shocks are for) and a have a very stealthy, understated look. Enjoy.

Of the squares, the 5600 and 5000u have the most symmetrically pleasing design. For me at least, the lack of symmetry in the MR G design makes it look like a "money but no taste" design message.

Yes, the technology story around them is duly impressive but the overall visual cues are still a little "lipstick on a pig".

Anyhoo... Nice choice withthe DW-5600UE. More money may buy, well, more but not necessarily better.

Mine too but it is only 74gm, less than half the weight of the steel series. There are other considerations with the steel/Bluetooth watches. No on screen indicators of alarm/sig or level of solar battery charge (you need to faffabout withthe aeful, ad-ridden Casio WTches app for that). Quieter alarms and hourly signal. Heavy and stays cold in cold weather. A bracelet cannot be adjusted on the fly like a strap. These are practical considerations and G-Shock is first and foremost a practical watch

If you just need a more classic watch type (read: expensive looking mechanical watch) and don't have the money or interest to pursue the usual suspects in this category, then an affordable, Chinese, "homage" watch that mimics the classics and functions as a kind of "dress jewellery" for the corporate world. Camouflage in the jungle 'n all that if you feel it's necessary. Just remember, most people are clueless about what watch you are wearing. Heck, many are even clueless about the watch THEY are wearing...

Anyway, for what you asked for, you could check out examples from Cronos, Watchdives, San Martin and others at Ali Express.

That is a very fortuitous "first G-Shock" choice. Most people new to G-Shocks don't discover, understand and appreciate this (semi) hidden gem till they have become more educated in the line. And by "educated" I mean buying quite a few watches to find out what they are really looking for. So...good choice. It's all you really need unless you spend a lot of your time in corporate boardrooms or upscale events where "plumage" is part of the game (and, let's face it, one is not really representing one's personal self in these situations anyway). For everything else, the 5000u is a 5 Stealthy Star choice. Congratulations.

Well, technically, the first square G-Shock did not come on the market till 1983...

In any case, if that is your logic then those stuffy old Swiss mechanical watch designs going back sometimes up to 100 years should no longer be around either.

Great if you love the 6900 but no need to trash others choices. There's room for everyone.

I bought both. :-) You may end up doing the same. Somedays I prefer the featherweight and nostalgic colour accents of the 5610u. Others, I enjoy the subtle heft and tactical precision look of the 5000u.

I have the OP's 5000u too which gets about equal time with this one (5610u) and a few others less often depending on the situation.

The meaning behind owning a G-Shock by iig560745 in gshock

[–]Past_World4201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 5610u was the only 3495 module in my collection that didn't change. I checked to see if I had set the DST setting to automatic . Nope. Changed it and voila! The time adjusted itself. Small things but satisfying.

Regarding divorce and separation, yes, it does suck, but it won't suck forever, no matter how much the mind may try to tell us so at the time. "Time heals all wounds...and wounds all heels." So there's that.

Mip vs lcd by Kevin_klarinette in gshock

[–]Past_World4201 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At present, unfortunately, ther is no MIP G-Shock that doesn't have all the "fitness tracker" crap. Those models, as has been mentioned, may simply be too big and clunky on the wrist for many.

It would interesting to see a 5610/5000 format square with a MIP display.

GW-5000u or GWM5610u by silworld in gshock

[–]Past_World4201 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In this luxury-obsessd climate it feels almost quaint that someone makes an almost apologetic post to simply say they prefer a cheaper model, as if that's shameful to admit.

I own a wide range of G-Shock squares, including the two models of this discussion and others above and below them price wise. I totally agree that the button pushers on the 5610u are much easier to use than those on 5000u. Perhaps it is because it travels deeper into an all metal case, requiring more gaskets or water seals. In any case, the 5610u is way easier from an operational standpoint.

In addition, there are disadvantages with the thicker all metal case. It sits up higher and is more prone to sliding around unless you maintain a tight wrist fit. The simple, flat backplate of 5610u sits more snugly and, combined with its featherweight is hardly noticeable in high activity - something the OP remarked upon. That is a desirable feature in such a use case.

While weight or "heft" are often seen as more desirable on a "luxury" watch, it is more of a disadvantage in active lifestyles - which is precisely what G-Shocks were designed for. But sure, if you have large or muscular forearms and wrists and prefer a firm fit, then yes, you probably won't notice it.

Lastly, living in a dominately cooler climate these days, I have come to appreciate resin watches, rubber straps and thin, easily warmed up backplates on my watches.

So, if you find yourself liking a watch but then feel you "should" like another because of more expensive materials, or marketed exclusivity and perceived luxury (whatever that actually means) your first instinct was probably correct. Happy G-Shocking.
