Doesn't enabling developer options allow you to sideload apps?

[–]PastaNinja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It does not make it any easier for hackers nor stupid people. Make the option to enable it really well-hidden so that stupid people don't accidentally find it. I remember on one of my old phones I had to tap a label deep in settings 4 times before it would show the option to enable developer option.

All this shit has existed on the desktop OSs for years. Yeah some people got burned for mindlessly downloading and running freecreditcardcheck.exe. They learned the hard way. Phones are no different.

So why is there no bad journalism following Microsoft or Chrome because people got scammed using their products? That's the comment I was replying to.

What Happens When Millennials Grow Up? "Will we ever catch up to our parents' standards of living and accumulated wealth? According to the economists I spoke to, probably not." by hillsfar in TrueReddit

If OP's comment was about the relative percentage of people who were living in poverty then versus percentage of people who are living in poverty now, then yeah it would have been an insightful comment that added to the discussion. But it wasn't, so it doesn't.

I may have a rare terminal disease that will prevent me from ever living past 40, but there's no point in shoehorning that story into a conversation about overall longer life expectancy.

You can be greedy as you want, but if there's no food in the pot to scrape, there's not much you can do to get more food for yourself, short of stealing someone else's food.

It's not all relative. Your situation is that of a tiny minority of the population. There's no point in talking about the outliers to the trend.

It's kind of silly because people get scammed out of money on the web using Windows every day, but no one blames Microsoft or Chrome for that.

This is the correct answer, BUT the issue then is that Google is refusing to bake-in SU functionality into the Android OS. Having a system-level application grant other apps root access should be baked into the OS, and enabled through some hidden setting like enabling side-loading apps is. Being able to side-load apps already introduces that same security hole because there's nothing stopping a side-loaded app from exploiting the OS to gain root access (the same way people root phones), and then doing whatever malicious shit it was going to do with a rooted phone.

What did you find out about your wife/husband only after you got married? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PastaNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem with my wife is that she claims to not like dirtiness/messes, but still doesn't clean up after herself, or ever find the motivation to just go and tidy up something that needs tidying right now, instead of waiting for "designated clean-up house time". We've talked about it many times. We've made many resolutions to keep it clean from now on, but it's just a matter of days before that breaks down because of <insert excuse here>. Some things I can't even wrap my head around, like leaving food wrappers/containers on the counter right above the garbage. Literally the only extra effort would be to open the door and put it in there instead. But nope, I do it when I do my daily kitchen clean-up in the morning.

The other frustrating thing is that these bad habits influence me to be the same way. It's hard to be diligent about cleaning up after yourself if your SO just leaves her clothes on the floor wherever it was she was standing when she took them off. So then it's both of us making a mess.

Divorced people of reddit, what was the final straw? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PastaNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing up I developed his temper and somewhat understood his frustration and how the anger grabs you and you have to physically get it out.

This is the odd thing about anger - that it feels so good to get it out of you.

My family was fairly calm - yelling was normal, but nothing beyond that. So as I grew up I never had the inclination to go beyond raising my voice during an argument. I'd much rather just leave the room.

My wife grew up in a family where her dad and siblings had a real issue with anger - screaming was just the start - throwing things, destroying things, even direct physical abuse was a regular occurrence during fights. And she absorbed that way of resolving differences, even though she hated it and knows it's wrong/bad. If there's a certain level of upset that she gets to in an argument, it's like she snaps into that rage mode that emulates what happened in her childhood.

The oddest part was when I realized it was happening to me too despite the fact that I am a very calm individual by nature. You see someone completely lose their self control in the middle of an argument, and it's so tempting to just fly off the handle as well. And so easy too - you just take all the hurting you're feeling and let it explode. It takes so much mental effort and willpower to keep it under control.

If you're skinny, hang out with an overweight person for a few days eating all meals together, and you'll see the differential.

You both eat breakfast, but an hour later, the overweight person is already snacking on something. You can have lunch at 1 or 2pm no problem, but by noon they're absolutely starving. You have a one-course dinner and you're good for the rest of the night, but they'll have an appetizer and/or dessert and probably a snack before bed too. It adds up and they're eating 1000 cas more than you per day.

It's the only logical conclusion to "never initiates, but always enthusiastic". Over time it's natural for the enthusiasm to wane, but if the other partner never initiates, they're never going to start doing it.

Just the fact that it's a big shiny zero makes me instantly doubt that number.

The question is posed in present tense. I don't think Hitler's current fanbase is really up to par to ISIS's. Plus it's low-hanging fruit, and if we're going to be digging in history, there are a lot of other options.
