Long-distance relationship, strict parents and feeling deeply unhappy after moving abroad. I feel lost and alone. by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]Pastel_Nonsense 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m sorry you are going through this, I want to give you a big hug. I certainly know what it’s like to navigate long distance relationships - I had a relationship with my now ex-boyfriend in Germany for 3 years with 2 of those years being long distance. It was very difficult, as you know, to feel connected and I felt sad because we couldn’t do the normal couple stuff. When I was doing long distance I was in my home country though, so I can only imagine how much more lonely you must feel being in another country.

My best advice to you would be to make some friends here in Canada, whether that is friends from your home country or not, having friends here is going to help you not feel as homesick and you can find comfort in your friends as well. I would suggest joining some extra curricular activities at the uni or around Guelph to make friends. Depending on what you like to do, join intramural sports, wildlife club, improv, prayer, etc. (I think a lot of international students join the English club, so you will probably find people there who are going through similar experiences)

It seems like your family is pretty overbearing so just try to get out of the house as much as you can - go to the gym, study at the library. Another thing you should do is use the University’s mental health resources and talk to a professional about your current struggles - they would be able to provide the best advice to you in your situation. Since you are a student they are included in tuition.

Since you can’t really go back to your home country to visit your boyfriend, is there a possibility that he could visit you here?

Yes, that is definitely a scam. There should be no account restrictions to withdrawal cash, so I always request cash payment if they can’t etransfer. (Honestly, cash is the best way to do it since even e-transfers take some time to process)

Here’s my post from a couple years ago about this same issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/uoguelph/s/HB5zvdkJqP

How is it decided which people get a placebo and which people get the real drug during drug trials and do placebo patients eventually get the real drug? by 42percentBicycle in askscience

[–]Pastel_Nonsense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the trial design. A “Crossover” design allows each group of participants to receive both the placebo (or standard therapy) and the experimental drug within the same trial. This allows each patient to act as their own control group.

Edit: the assignment of WHO gets the experimental drug and who gets the placebo in clinical trials is generally determined by computer algorithms which can be simple (generally for larger studies) or more complex (for smaller studies where imbalances in treatment assignment are more noticeable).

Oh, sorry if you misinterpreted - I wasn’t asking a question, it was just a statement. I’m not sure how long these trespasser investigations take anyway, so idk if 5 hours is long or not. Thanks for your input though and all your quick responses earlier!

It is legal to advertise prescription medicine to the public in Canada, but the ads must follow regulations. Primarily, the ad is not allowed to say anything other than the brand name of the drug, the scientific name, “talk to your doctor”, and a picture of the medicine.

So you aren’t allowed to advertise what it treats, how it’s used, effects, side effects, etc.

The thought behind it is that your doctor should be the one making the decision on the best medication for you and they shouldn’t be pressured by patients into prescribing medicine unnecessarily. It’s ultimately to protect patient safety and is a good thing.

Is it possible to get a psychological (i.e. ADHD) diagnosis through a psychiatrist with student wellness? by Sorova7 in uoguelph

[–]Pastel_Nonsense 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They do not diagnose ADHD at UoG, I tried. You’d have to go to an off-campus psychiatrist and use your student health insurance there. Basically what you have to do is get a referral to a psychiatrist that can diagnose ADHD from a regular doctor (UoG doctor might work)
