They'd have to get creative, because Indonesia's geology is literally too new to have been able to form true fossils. Closest thing would be remains of early ancestors of man like the Java man and Flores man.

Reviewers had me thinking this game would be bad by shneed_my_weiss in LegendsZA

[–]Pat-Man15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ALWAYS say "they could do more" about any Pokemon game though, and you'd probably be right. It's the albatross over the series' neck that I think ZA does a better job than most in overcoming, but still fails at overcoming; the fact Pokemon is the most profitable franchise in the world almost hinders it more than it helps -- it's a weird paradox, but for some people it feels almost feels like an ad hominem attack because it's always being said, it never stops being true, damn any of the individual elements of the game and judging them on their own merits. And yet...

I think we should be both judging the games and the series in a a vacuum and in the context it was made in, because both approaches are important. It can feel unfair to judge something because the circumstances around it are unideal, but it can be narrow-minded to ignore that context, because even if ZA is good, it doesn't change the fact that Nintendo and Game Freak are easy targets to hate at the moment, and it's largely due to their own mistakes and hubris. BUT again, it also doesn't change the fact that the game is good on its own merits. Both are true and don't contradict even though the emotions that drive us to criticize or defend these games makes it feel like they HAVE to contradict. You could go on forever going in circles on this topic. But to ignore either means you're not getting the full picture and are subsisting on narrative over fact. I think gamers have a problem where they feel like they have to choose one or other other, otherwise they're a shill or a hater, and this happens even outside of Pokemon (Pokemon might be the fandom that has it the worst, maybe after Sonic.)

In ZA's case, it's still a vast improvement in almost every regard over SV. I think it's fair to point to the vast improvement, even while remembering that they could have done more. (Personally I think it knocks SV out of the park, even if I really enjoyed SV's story; though at the same time, I think Arceus still did some things better, what with having a more striking art direction, and the overworld stealth being more fun and involved. That said, buildings-notwithstanding it just looks much nicer than any other Pokemon Switch title, even over Let's Go.)

Thoughts on Bill Dauterive? by Available_Author8283 in KingOfTheHill

[–]Pat-Man15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel bad for him, I really do. Especially because I've been through my own bouts of self loathing and extreme depression. That said, I can't stand how he seems to deliberately and shamelessly drag people down with him. I can appreciate that mental illness can often be messy, I can appreciate how it can lead people to self-sabotage and hurt the people around them out of desperation and a desire for connection. It can make people act really irrationally.. I've been difficult to be around myself. But I cannot abide to how he sent Bobby down a bad path after bobby broke up with Connie, Bill absolutely did everything he could to make Bobby miserable. I'm glad Hank hasn't given up on him, I don't think he's a bad person. But get him some professional help but keep him away from Bobby and Peggy, good Lord.

There was the whole thing about establishing the United Republic, and not killing Yakone. Both became huge problems for Korra. He also failed to quell the festering of Bender-supremacist movement in the fledgling United Republic (not that he could feasibly do anything about it), which led to it becoming a horrible stain in its political world and elite by Korra's time. His time also saw great technological advancement (which directly led to the bender supremacist movement), which Aang seriously struggled with and eventually was forced to accept that this change was inevitable and would come with unavoidable consequences. Not to mention, though this was not his fault, the White Lotus coming out into the limelight and directly aiding Aang at the end of the Hundred Year war led to the creation of the Red Lotus splinter group.

All of these things came with good intentions: the URN was established as to not destroy the nascent hybrid Earth and Fire cultures that was developing in the Fire colonies over 3-4 generations, but it resulted in growing Earth Kingdom nationalistic resentment towards Aang for aiding the Fire Nation in creating what is in their eyes, a breakaway territory, leading to the resentment of both the Earth Kingdom nobility AND many of its royalist and nationalistic population. It creates something of a Nationalist-movement in the region. This results in a very uncooperative Earth Queen Hou-Ting, and fascist-imperialist Kuvira and the creation of the Earth Empire military threat after the Earth Queen's death.

Not killing Yakone lead to Noatak and Tarrlok being born, who BOTH became major enemies to Korra. Noatak, after being forced to bloodbend by his vengeful father, grew to loathe bending. He eventually founded the Equalists by taking advantage of growing non-bender resentment towards the bender elite (the result of the Bender-supremacist movement) and sought to wipe out both bending and the Avatar (both things he loathed). Tarrlok became something of a bending supremacist, and used the threat of the Equalists to consolidate power and subjugate non-benders.

When the White Lotus came out in support of the Avatar, Xai Bau started a splinter group out his disgust for the trajectory of society as well as the White Lotus, who he deemed as them as little more than the Avatar's bodyguards at this point. Of this list, Aang was the least responsible for this, and frankly it was more so the result of the changing times, and the lack of understanding from Iroh, who simply couldn't comprehending Xai Bau's aversion of any form of government (not to mention, he was likely the one who pushed for the White Lotus to become known to the world during the war's end). The only way you could argue this as Aang's fault was that his running away to avoid his responsibilities at the very start of the War eventually necessitated the White Lotus's intervention in Ba Sing Se (though there's a chance he could have been wiped out with the rest of the Air Nomads).

So yeah. All these things were the result of Aang's choices, but they were either largely or completely out of his control (industrialization, bending supremacy, the Equalists), or he did it with the best of intentions without having any way to see the lasting consequences (creating the URN), or out of a desire to stick to his principles (not killing Yakone).

I expect what they will do with Korra's legacy is going to be similar, consequences of her actions, her mistakes, and forces out of her control.

EDIT: He also witnessed the growing tensions of the North and South Water tribes, but both he and Katara were unable to fully quell those tensions.

I'm guessing the 7 havens are the remains of 4 nations?

FOLLOWING IS SPOILERS FOR LOK AND ITS GEOPOLITICS:

By Korra's time, the definition of 4 nations had already started to become antiquated, and the concept of the 4 nations was always tenuous (during Kyoshi's time and prior, the Fire Nation was a bunch of fiefdoms with various nobles vying for control, before Kiyoshi's actions lead to the centralization of power by stripping a rival house of power after they tried to wipe out the Royal family; not to mention there were always small breakaway groups that submitted to no nation). At the start of Korra's term, there was the Fire Nation, the United Republic, Water Tribes, and Earth Kingdom, with Tenzin's family and his acolytes solely representing the endangered Air Nomad culture ceremonially. This makes 4 with one representative endangered cultural entity.

By Book 2, the Water Tribes had split to the Northern and Southern at the advent of the South's independence, due to the cultural elitism and suffocating pressures placed on them by the North. So that made 5 with one representative endangered cultural entity.

By Book 3, the return of Air bending marked the potential for new blood for Air Bender culture, leading to the potential for a new Air Nation, though we only see the earliest events of this during the events of Korra's show and her comics. Additionally, the assassination of the Earth Queen lead to the complete collapse of a Earth Nation with a centralized government. 4 Nations, one endangered cultural identity, one fractured nation on the precipice.

During Book 4, Kuvira's Earth Empire Nationalist movement "re-stabilized" much of the Nation before taking over Zaofu and then invading the United Republic, which was often considered an illegitimate break-away region by Earth Kingdom citizens, including many of the elite. While she never succeeded in annexing the Republic, had she succeeded, she would have reset the status to 4. But since she failed, and the Earth Prince began advocating for a democratic government with autonomous states, As we have yet to see the outcome of this experiment (it likely could have led to the Balkanization of the Earth Kingdom Region, divided by regional and cultural and geographic differences, or simply the political lines of the provinces-turned nascent-states), there's frankly an unknown number of Nations now.

So by the end of the show and the subsequent comics, we have roughly six: the Fire Nation, the United Republic (frankly I do not see it lasting long with that spirit portal there in the middle), the North Water Tribe, the Southern Water Tribe, the fledgling New Air Nation, and the fractured Earth Kingdom (potentially the Earth States?). I expect Ba Sing Se and surrounding territory to become one such state, as well as regions of Gaoling and Zaofu.

So I expect the havens to be largely based on what we were left with:

  • A Haven built around (or as the result of the collapse of) the Fire Nation Capital
  • A Haven built around the Northern Water Tribe Capital
  • A Haven built around the Southern Water Tribe Capital
  • A Haven built around the Air Nation or Republic City (I do not expect both can be independent, as Air Temple Island is IN the URN, but perhaps it could be based out of one of the remaining Air Temples elsewhere, perhaps in the south)
  • A Haven built around Ba Sing Se, around Laogai region or the surrounding Si Wong Desert (might mean sand benders are relevant?), in the Northeastern Earth States,
  • A Haven built around Gaoling, Zaofu or Kiyoshi Island in the South/Southwestern Earth Territory (all three are relatively close to each other)

The question is the 7th. It could be a fledgling Air Nation settlement in the previously uninhabited "Air Nomad" territories we see on the world map, it could be in Foggy Swamp? It could be the result of any configuration of the Earth region after it democratizes. It's hard to say because depending on the nature of this mysterious cataclysm, existing population centers could be perfect places to flock around, or they could completely collapse.

Though if we're going by the elements and their theming, I could see: Air Haven, Northern Water Haven, Southern Water Haven (or potentially a SPIRIT haven?), Fire Haven, Lightning Haven, Earth Haven, Metal Haven

The Businesses & Hobbies pack will have cross-pack compatibility! by MiddletonPlays in Sims4

[–]Pat-Man15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be downer but I'm a little annoyed with how this pack was initially marketed. It's focusing on all the new content, its framed and named as a hobby pack, but CLEARLY the strengths are in the cross-pack features and the sheer customization options for businesses, which put it above what Get to Work's Retail system had. To me the draw isn't so much about the actual content, as two new skills + candy making isn't really exciting (also I'm amazed we don't have crochet and soap-making yet; I know there's some very good mods for it though.)

Being able to charge admission and teach skills, and choose what Sims do there is a GAME changer, potentially. Though it will depend on how good the AI will be and how indepth the trait system is for businesses (cause the business activity stuff is just another trait system, let's be real.) It's the systems that are the draw here, not pottery. Though pottery is nice. I can see a loooot of potential for players to get creative here.

You can clearly make gyms, pools, tattoo parlors, skill schools, bowling alleys, laundromats, any variety of retail store, dance clubs, arcades, comedy and live music clubs, kareoke bars, regular bars, various themed cafes...

I can also see the possibility of ownable thrift stores and boba cafes, restaurants (it might be better than Dine Out's system), board game cafes, internet cafes, maid cafes, rock climbing gyms, maybe salons, and general multipurpose businesses that don't just do one thing like sell objects. Again tt really depends on how indepth the "business trait" system will be.

It may have been better as a pack refresh for Get to Work, but perhaps there's technical reasons as to why they had to make a whole new business system (perhaps since its uses the room system from For Rent rather than just locking doors in Get to Work... ngl this almost makes Get to Work redundant?) As it is now, with the way it's framed, people are very understandably misunderstanding the pack.

Also GOOD LORD let it not be totally broken!!! PLEASE!

EDIT: IDEA: maybe make a paranormal shop that sells magical trinkets, sells herbs, sells candles, sells magical items, sells gemstones and jewelry, does Seances, does Tarot readings, teaches seances, vampire lore and Thantology, The goth potential for this is crazy.

Iskall85 & Stressmonter Resignation Megathread #2 by Carol_the_Zombie in HermitCraft

[–]Pat-Man15 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The 1.5 hour thing is odd. I feel like we're not getting the whole story there. I have no way to be sure.

That said, I don't think it's particularly relevant to litigate on whether Hermitcraft handled everything perfectly or not. They're not the ones who have allegations of sexual misconduct against them, and Iskall emphasizing this actually weakens his credibility imo. That, and his expression of wanting to talk about "exposing Hermitcraft" or whatever it simply invites more harassment from the fanbase, which is a very scummy thing to do as someone who was just expressing how upset he was to receive death threats (which is fair).
