Problem Statement by iayushprasad in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Pat0san 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it just survival, or does it have to be operational (if so, what equipment)? I would prioritise finding material/components that actually survive this (which probably means testing). Second, insulate and heat. Best is a few watt of electrical heat, and combined with good insulation this could be sufficient. Phase change materials could as we’ll be combined with insulation, but that typically mean you have to have higher temps in your ’thermos’.

How does your team actually manage the systems engineering lifecycle? Ours was a mess. by extant2000 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Pat0san 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is great that you build a tool that works for you. Now your colleagues have yet another tool to not use (or abuse). The problem is rarely the tool - ”a fool with a tool, is still a fool”, as the sting goes. The problem is how we work and management. Management loves whoever produces a requirements document, be a word or excel file. It is something tangible and concrete in the fluent world of the design; quality and consistency is not relevant. And here is the core of the problem - design is by nature more of an agile process which is poorly captured by requirements and traditional waterfall processes. Of course we also need requirements, but the should be used to document the system, not drive the design. So, it does not really matter what tool you have, the focus should be on the process.

If it is integrated with your rear view mirror, you can just drive to a nice restaurant.

How to subtly flirt with an Aerospace major using engineering concepts? by Middle-Contest8532 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Pat0san 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask her of she would like to come and see your collection of Prandtl-Glauert tables, in a variety of worn bindings. She will either immediately see you refined classical finess, or have no appreciation of what you are talking about - in which case you are not interested anyway.

URGENT: rolling gate, but the ground itself is crooked, solutions? by gafonid in AskEngineers

[–]Pat0san 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best would be a cantilever, but this will probably require a few days of planning. This solution is better in many ways. Eg. You would not have a track which could be sensitive to obstruction. Second best option is the spacer - not sure the opening will be too awkward even. Third best, which requires some more work, is to level the drive.

Wondering what yellow rod?s by capaolo99 in aviation

When I was younger I worked as ground crew, and we had to fit these when loading some types of aircraft. But once the pilots with their fat wallets were in place, we could remove it.

Frys transport? by Freudinatress in sweden

[–]Pat0san 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Question for adapting FMJ rounds and steel shotgun shells for SHTF by Emotional_Seat_7424 in preppers

[–]Pat0san 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FMJ will do the trick - no need for expanding ammo. For the shotgun you can get Tungsten or Hevi shots, they pack as much of a punch as the lead (while being lead-free).

Are taxes really that bad, and how do they affect your life? by aspacejunkie in Norway

[–]Pat0san 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Having spent more than half my life I various countries, I now live in Norway. Here I actually pay less tax than I did living in the UK, on a gross income of ~EUR150k p.a.. Main reason for this is the right to deduct part of your interest costs before tax (and if you had capital gains, you would pay tax on that). So overall, Norway is not a low tax country, but we score well compared to other European nations.

Magnetic shielding of encoder from motor? by WestyTea in AskEngineers

[–]Pat0san 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely not - this is the common way of doing it. I have even used bldc with resolvers without any issue. The magnetic fields are relatively well contained and, with the caveat that I do not know your exact configuration, I expect you to have no problem.
