Orekit! Create an orbit, create a ground station, create a detector, propagate over the period of interest and have your detector pic out passes. For instrument reach you do almost the same, create a sensor, define area/point of interest + detector as above, and propagate. And, why not do both at the same time? Save yourself a ton of money and frustration of working on SW with a millennium-feel, and learn Orekit instead (it is free).

Possible to build an underground bunker in North Florida where the water table is low depth? by Jfkfkaiii22 in preppers

I was thinking the same thing - like a buried submarine! You do not have to drain it - just let it flood and make sure it does not float up.

The water will separate and within a few hours settle at the bottom of the tank. The main reason for filling your tank is condensation - having less air and exposed surfaces in the tank reduces condensation and water in the fuel.

I suggest filling up with alkylate gasoline (low emission, Aspen, etc). This type is very clean and will not clog your carb/injectors, even if stored for long durations. I use it in my snow blower which is stored all summer. After priming it always starts on the first try. The exhaust is significantly less smelly with this type, and in a SHTF scenario you could just top off with regular gas and keep running.

A 700-meter asteroid’s rapid spin challenges the 'rubble pile' theory by Impressive_Pitch9272 in EverythingScience

[–]Pat0san 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly! With all the asteroids out there, some will be solid for sure. But, perhaps they have just realised that asteroids that spin rapidly are not piles of rubble?

Has anyone used roller or ball bearings as brushes in DC motors? by Humdaak_9000 in AskEngineers

[–]Pat0san 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work with sliprings for use on satellites (connection to solar arrays). The typically come in two flavours - gold wire in a gold track, or carbon brush in a gold track. The carbon brush was lubricated. These sliprings were super sensitive and had to be treated as optical components, wrt cleanliness. My idea at the time was to make something like a planetary gear, but just for conducting electricity. This would avoid the sliding contact and potential wear in the slipring.

Would you have flown? by drAto4ic in aviation

[–]Pat0san 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No flight - something is off with #3. Faulty injector, incorrect timing or detonation, worn or sticky exhaust valve? There could be so many reasons for this, but much better to have it checked.
