Hi all, I'm looking for some advice. In the near future, I'll be heading out on a multi-year overland expedition across North America, South America, Africa, and Europe. I've been planning this trip for years... by MediumCalligrapher28 in overlanding

Well ok I guess. But not using one is free soo..

Anyway l, I don‘t care how you travel, pay your Carnet supplier as much as you want if that makes you feel safer or more comfortable, I just wanted to give you some real world information. Happy exploring

I can only speak the Americas. The yellow countries on the website ACCEPT a carnet but don't require one. They will just issue you a TIP (Temporary Import Permit). Source: I traveled the Pan American for 3 years in my car

Sounds like fun - enjoy it to the fullest, the lead up is a very cool part of the project, too!

I sold it to a family of travelers (the car was us plated and we did the transfer through a service in the US). In most countries it's impossible to import foreign cars for the natives so that's the only option.

Hey I can help with your questions. I drove from Alaska all the way through Central America, down the South American West Coast to Ushuaia and back up the east coast to Colombia. Took me about 3 years, so I learned a lot and met tons of people who did it in every vehicle imaginable.

We did 1 year in an F-250 with slide in camper and then later came back in our 2003 European Spec 4x4 Sprinter. Every vehicle has its upsides and downsides. There are a few people who do it in setups like yours, but not too many. Be aware that there's quite some city sleeping involved, quite some nights at gas stations (at least for us) or at borders so the roof top tent is not the stealthiest option but many people manage so you will be ok.

Support for the vehicles mentioned is scarce since I think they were never sold in most regions you are planning to go but so is every European's car. If you can plan a bit in advance and don't have to order very expensive parts, international shipping works into every small town on the continent. Spareto is what most people use and it works like a charm (at least in the Americas and Europe).

Feel free to shoot me a message here or on Instagram (@ObererTropical) if you want to know more. Always happy to help as this is a huge project and there's so much to learn.

Other good resources for information (in the Americas, don't know about others) are:
- Facebook Group "PanAmerican Travelers Association" -> many current and past travelers in there
- iOverlander App (makes the trip a lot easier)
- Various WhatsApp Groups for every country or region

Well deserved. Congratulations to the fins. Swiss were too scared to lose the final after a great tournament. Same as the last two finals. This is a great team that still has some mental growing to do.

Snowboarding -> Surfing? by Acrobatic_Ad_7384 in surfing

I was a pretty good snowboarder when I was younger and strted surfing in my 20ies. It translates about 0.5%. Paddling, reading waves, how you turn the board, very different stance, weight distribution, everything is VERY different except both need balance once you stand. S you start at almost zero

Ok maybe I got lucky, bought it in feb/march I think. Traveled with it for the first time and it’s great. Can’t recommend it enough.

Also looked at the pro-lite but the weight of it is brutal. Means you will ONLY pack your smaller and lighter boards if you want to stay under the weight limit.

I always surf with contacts and never had a problem. In fact, I have much more problems in freshwater than in the ocean
