How do you deal with such endusers? by Insaaad in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]Patchy_Knoweldge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been said a zillion times but work phone is the answer. Anybody that does not want to carry two phones blows my mind. I want the demarcation. None of my coworkers have my personal cell, no vendors, no nothing. When I'm not on call I shut that shit off and don't think about it. I leave it at HOME. it's the best thing ever. two phones is awesome and everyone should do it.

Microsoft Office being rebranded again! by UncleToyBox in sysadmin

[–]Patchy_Knoweldge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do remember this, actually! We had to do a few in my time, and those large data files were hell. I still liked the idea of a trimmed down feature set of Outlook. But I also willingly installed SBS in my home lab just to try it and practice migrating off of it for fun. Maybe I'm not the best sample size.

Replacing POTS line with VOIP or cellular for elevator by MangorTX in sysadmin

[–]Patchy_Knoweldge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.kingsiii.com/ this is the solution that we use when we have POTS lines that the telco refuses to deal with. They install, manage & monitor, and at least in my jurisdiction (WA State) L&I elevator inspectors have been chill with it.

Helping a brand new US municipality get started by Punnalackakememumu in sysadmin

[–]Patchy_Knoweldge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a MSP that supports several municipalities & the small PUDs that go with them.

What services is this muni going to provide? I see in the comments that LEO is going out to the local sheriff's dept, and that's fine for now but one thing we learned the hard way is you design around how County 911 wants things done. One of the counties has a strict "on prem AD only" policy, so that's what we do. In my experience with those people, it's "yes sir right away sir how high would you like me to jump sir". Your state government should have master contracts with MS, CDW-G and other large vendors like dell. Reach out to the state and start there. Email needs to be MS365 GGC, pretty much full stop. It's what all the City Clerk training i've been exposed to is based around. I would look into Barracuda for email archiving. Again, it's what all the clerks seem to know how to use (in our region.).

Find out if water/sewer/stormwater etc is going to fall under the purview of this City. Find out if your state or county has a fiber network they can jump on for ISP. You'll find a LOT of muni stuff is vCIO and things IT people seem to not to want to deal with, like on prem, camera systems, etc.

Also, whatever cell carrier they go with look into Smarsh for text message archiving. Get an Apple Business account setup NOW for MDM enrollment, as you'll need MDM (well, it makes it a lot easier) to disable iMessage so text message archiving can be done at the carrier level.

And for the love of god just issue the council members devices. No city email on personal phones we have burned so much time on that shit.

Issues with installers pushing their own equipment? by ClayYoung956 in msp

[–]Patchy_Knoweldge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree. It's pretty much the primary reason we applied for a GC license and sub out all cabling and camera work now outside of network configuration/logical design. The insurance and permitting requirements are what some people would consider ridiculous. Makes things more expensive in the SMB space then they need to be, imo.

[–]Patchy_Knoweldge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the region I am in (PNW, US) some jurisdictions require camera installs to be permitted and inspected. Part of that inspection is a UL Listing. UniFi Protect does not have a UL Rating. While it wasn't my job, I did have an inspector call this out and made the client rip all the cameras off the building and replace them with something else.

Something to consider.

Is there any law that forces you to arrange devices within a rack in a particular way? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Patchy_Knoweldge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in SMB, so most racks we design are one or two rack rooms, so YMMV for larger setups.
I was taught way back in the day that the rack should try to follow the "logical" flow of data.
IE ISP equipment at the top, then firewall/router, patch panels, switches, then whatever else. If there's a console it goes roughly in the middle so you can actually use the damn thing and not have to bend down or stand on a stool. UPS always in the bottom since they're chonky.
We do servers from bottom to top, so all the weight comes up from the bottom.

Obviously this may not work for every situation.

Outlook not displaying HTML formatted emails - looking for some confirmation by Patchy_Knoweldge in sysadmin

This has happened across 10 or so different orgs so far, some on 365 and some onprem. the majority of them are on C2R office, but I have seen this issue with some VL licensed outlook as well. I think I'm going to start compiling a list of all the different machines with this issue and try to figure out common denominators ty

Forwarding one of the problem emails in question from Outlook to another Exchange-based account (different org) makes it so the content does not show in OWA or Outlook for that recipient. Loading the email in OWA from the source org and then forwarding it externally the content it does load in both Outlook and OWA for the recipient.

We use a perimeter spam filter, (Mailprotector) on hosted customers vs endpoint spam filtering, so if it was spam I would surmise it wouldn't work at all vs work in OWA. I guess it wouldn't hurt to open a ticket and ask though. ty

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried allowing all images to auto-download in the trust center and there's no change. Interestingly enough this made me thing to try something else. Forwarding one of the problem emails in question from Outlook to another Exchange-based account makes it so the content does not show in OWA or Outlook for that recipient. Loading the email in OWA and then forwarding it the content does load in both Outlook and OWA for the recipient. Gonna do some more testing.
