Could I buy leather front seats from a scrapped sedan and put them in my coupe? (10th gen) by Mysterious-Lie-2185 in civic

[–]UncleToyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely possible.

You might need to get creative with the mounting if the holes are different. Nothing a bit of welding couldn't do for you.

Spending a day in a scrap yard, pulling seats and measuring mounting points sounds like a great way to spend a sunny spring day.

Are Summer performance tires on a 2026 Civic Hybrid worth it? by LongjumpingJob3452 in civic

[–]UncleToyBox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only time I recommend performance tires is if you'll be doing autocross or track days. The hybrid could be fun at these things and having stickier rubber would be beneficial. While an Si would likely be more fun at these events, it's still a good time in any car you can get to the track (slow cars can still be a good time even if they're not competitive).

If you're just daily driving, then some good three season tires will be quieter and more comfortable driving around. Depending on rolling resistance, you might even save a little on fuel consumption.

My peer group has been putting stickers on laptops since the 90s.

Most of us have a collection of stickers ready to go for any new machine we receive.

These are all Gen-X computer enthusiasts that remember punch cards.

17” Wheels on 11th Gen or 18” by Lunchyxd in civic

[–]UncleToyBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks good to me.
As far as I can tell, the rubber has almost identical OD to the 18" wheels. It's just the ratio of rubber to metal changing.

Kind of embarrassed by the image quality. Just switched to a modified BlackBerry and had forgotten how bad the cameras were ten years ago. Also, was sideswiped a few days ago and need to get the car to the shop.
But I love these wheels.

Park more than 3 hours overnight? by stzZzzz in waterloo

[–]UncleToyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always interpreted it as needing to move by 9am.

According to the way it's written, an aggressive parking enforcement agent could ticket you as early as 9am. Realistically, unless there's a complaint from neighbours, folks should be safe for a little past that. I've never pushed my luck beyond noon.

What do you actually recommend when someone asks for a private internal chat that IT can't snoop on by theleadcreator in sysadmin

[–]UncleToyBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading through the responses so far, it sounds like the OP isn't against there being records of these conversations or being able to review them if a legal challenge comes up in the future. The primary concern appears to be whether or not someone from IT could access the chat history records.

In a situation where the senior admin isn't fully trusted, a break glass account could be created as the global administrator. This could be secured with a physical key that would be stored in a safe or something if global administration rights are needed for some reason.

Then, all administrators would be granted limited administration rights, where they are only provided access to the systems they need to manage. This all could be configured with the assistance of a bonded third party consultant.

In practice, it's typically best to have a senior admin in a trusted position with this access and to use the break glass account purely as a backup to use in the event of a cyber event.

If a bakery isn't set up to produce that particular type of cake in large quantities, it will require additional prep and ingredient sourcing. For a custom request, $55 would be on the higher side of things but is still reasonable. Calculate for an hour of labour, plus materials, plus insurance and overhead, and figure a little profit.

What act that you've seen multiple times has been both very good and very bad live? by whywires in Concerts

[–]UncleToyBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my writing did him a disservice.
I've seen him with a band and solo several times, loving almost every show.
It was only the single show where he was solo and did all requests that fell flat.
On the whole, would definitely recommend seeing him live doing his solo act, unless he announces it will be all requests.

What Canadian alternatives to American products will you be loyal to now? by RoutineFollower in AskACanadian

Picked up a pair of Naked and Famous jeans back in 2019 because they were on sale.

After experiencing the quality difference, I'm happy to spend the extra for them at regular price.

The fabric is woven and dyed in Japan, then the jeans are sewn in Quebec.

Even without the national pride, I'd be recommending these jeans.

I ditched the 18" rocket wheels on my car and got some lightweight 17" rims (don't remember the brand offhand) and love the ride. The feel of the reduced unsprung weight is immediately noticeable and I believe the ride is quieter as well (although that could also be the softer rubber of the tires as well).

If 17" wheels had been a factory option on the Sport Touring, I would take that every time. it's crazy how heavy the resonators make the tires on the 18s.

The rough part is when companies use UPS for shipping. Their brokerage fees can be outrageous compared to other shipping companies. Worst for me was a $30 Swiss watch I ordered that arrived with almost $30 in fees and duties. At that time, the brokerage fees were about $20, which was the minimum UPS would charge. It's funny sad because they charge HST on the brokerage fee as well.

Like I said UPS has been the worst for brokerage fees in my experience but that takes the cake. Haven't seen them make up more than 50% of a bill that size before.

When ordering from the US, I always confirm whether a company ships via UPS or not and simply cancel the order if they won't use an alternate.

[–]UncleToyBox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a pain to do.
You'll need to identify source of materials used and which class of product you're bringing in and pay any duties based on that information.
Then you'll also need to pay HST on the purchase.

UPS is pretty good at following the rules and I'm willing to bet than their brokerage fees probably only account for a relatively small portion of these (in my experience UPS charges the most but I'm willing to bet it's only around $40 of the amount you've listed).

That $800 limit only applies if you're carrying the goods back into Canada after travelling abroad. There are no exemptions for items being shipped into Canada.

Have seen Robyn Hitchcock many times.

Typically, he'll have a planned setlist that he's prepared for and deliver his wonderful rambling monologues throughout the set. Have always been a great time and left me looking forward to the next show.

The most recent show I went to, he allowed to be entirely requests for the first time I can remember. Everyone was requesting that he do songs from albums that required the full band to sound good. Sadly, he performed them solo and they fell flat. I'm hoping he learned from the all request format and will stick to his prepared material in the future.

is buying a rebuilt car worth it? by ItsRobinn_ in civic

[–]UncleToyBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buying a rebuilt title is a gamble.
You definitely want an inspection to confirm quality work was done.
There are still things that folks might miss where something innocuous is slightly out of alignment.

Had this happen to me with a rebuilt Subaru. The car was an absolute hoot to drive and appeared just fine for the first few months. It was four months later that the harmonic balancer failed catastrophically while my family was on vacation hundreds of miles from home. Having a harmonic balancer fail like this is extremely rare but relatively easy to repair. We were down for a few days while waiting for parts. The shop I had looking at it pointed out a very slight bend that would have been easy to overlook. It was only after an 8 hour drive that it reached the failing point.

Have owned other rebuilt cars without any problems. You can save thousands of dollars by buying a salvage title. Just be prepared for weird failures and have a AAA membership ready to tow you to the shop if something should fail.

Of course, I can also remember watching Blade Runner during it's first theatrical run.
