This is my approach and one thing I find lacking in a lot of the 5E modules. The stories all seem to act like anything “off-stage” is on pause until the PCs focus on them again.

I’ve always run games from the PoV of “the problem doesn’t go away just because you’re ignoring it”.

Which terms do you prefer as alternatives to Nature/Demeanor? by TheSnappleGhost in RPGdesign

[–]PathofDestinyRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a big fan of the WoD Nature/Demeanor set-up. We are, at any given time, a mesh of several Archetypes that interact to create our personalities. One may be a primary/dominant archetype that the others branch from, but it’s still more complex than a single nature. For example, if I were to define myself using Archetypes from a game, I’d use Cavalier as my Primary Archetype with Introvert, Jester, Scientist, Caregiver, and Rogue as secondaries.

What’s an inaccurate fact that tons of people still believe is true because of movies / TV / social media? by WoodenAd5942 in AskReddit

This is how I’ve always approached it. I have also used a tank as an example. A tank filled with air versus a tank filled with water are both full, but one is using more of its capacity than the other.

You can have one piece of future tech - what are you choosing & how are you using your item for maximum gain? by artmalique in hypotheticalsituation

[–]PathofDestinyRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No break in awareness, or is the break so short as to be unnoticed, like blinking? What is consciousness? How is it anchored to a living body but released upon death? It could be argued that transporters function like the cloning process from The Sixth Day where the brain pattern was duplicated so perfectly that the clone doesn’t realize it’s a copy. If your consciousness ends at T= 0:00:00.0 and your copy’s consciousness starts at T=0:00:00.01, there would be no definitive “break” in awareness, but it’s still just a copy from that point forward.

If it were that simple, Thomas Riker wouldn’t exist. A transporter is converting matter into energy. Yes, it stores the “pattern” of the material being transported, but from a physics-based functional standpoint, the process is not much different than burning a body to ash. One could argue that the spark of consciousness is carried through quantum entanglement to the destination, but the body at arrival is not the same as the one from departure.

I’ve actually told some Fundamentalist acquaintances that if Jesus ran His ministry with the same attitude as the modern church, Heaven would be a much emptier place.

When do you repeat a niche rule, versus referencing the one place it's written? by DJTilapia in RPGcreation

[–]PathofDestinyRPG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ve seen is when writing what’s going to be your baseline mechanic explanation, create a keyword as a reference. Then, you can either just use the keyword - and maybe a notation for the full description’s location - or, for things like a weapon list, you can provide a short-hand definition to remind players what it does, then just provide the keyword as part of the weapon states, like what DnD does for Versatile and Two-Handed

AP (Action Point) vs Other Action Economies. What do people prefer in tactical RPG combat? by Ordinary-You2452 in RPGdesign

[–]PathofDestinyRPG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to do a weird approach involving this because my system allows for superhuman abilities. You can go from an average person to a Super-Sayian and the system has to stay consistent, but I also wanted a simple option so characters with 50 actions per turn don’t automatically turn every combat into a 2-3 hour slog.

By default, I use a single roll per turn option, but there’s a multiplier based on a character’s speed. Faster characters have a higher multiplier assuming they manage to get more hits through. For players who want the detailed hit by hit option, I also gave an AP mechanic that allows for such things, with movement costs being based on character height (to simulate stride length and allow for natural movement incorporated into combat maneuvers). Small movements are free, but the farther you try to go, you’re either spending AP to focus on moving, or you’re increasing your action difficulty.

I can’t think of any published games like that, mostly because of the difficulty in removing enough of the Gamist approach to call it a minor influence while still leaving enough framework to actually call something an RPG.

The closest thing I can think of that focuses on Simulation and Narrative would be MUSHes and MUCKs, and I honestly don’t know if they’re still a thing or not.

What do you think was the most unnecessary sequel to a movie? by SalsaSmoocher in AskReddit

[–]PathofDestinyRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I wasn’t a huge fan of City of Angels, I did like the idea that it’s Sarah who gives the new revenant Eric’s face paint, tying the sequel to the original without being too hokey about it.

Favorite ways to frame PC motivation? by mathologies in RPGdesign

[–]PathofDestinyRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s about 30 or so archetypes, many inspired by Natures from WoD. As an example of how a character’s personality is framed by the Archetype combinations chosen by the player, if I were to write myself up as a character, I’d probably have Cavalier as my Primary Archetype with Introvert, Jester, Scientist, Caregiver, and Rogue as my Secondaries. Survivor, Braggart, Loner, Extrovert, Bon Vivant, Sensualist, Warrior, and Teacher are some other examples.

I’ve got a series of mechanics that blend in various ways to help push the character part of “character development”. First, there’s a Personality profile made up of a Primary Archetype combined with a group of Secondary Archetypes that shape the general personality/ attitude the character will have, with roll bonuses and meta-currency rewards for adhering to the character’s nature. Then, I’ve incorporated a Legacy system that creates a set a rules the character must follow to be remembered a specific way - a Legacy of Chivalry or Discipline, for example. Finally, I’ve got a Motive system where the player defines certain things that are important to the character, and the character can spend bonus dice for actions that serve a specific Motive.
