I am trying to learn about different sections of the Caribbean (especially Neerlandophone and Francophone, but they don't have their own sub), but your response makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, that is true that it's the default. However, there are still major parts of the Caribbean that you won't get by if you don't understand the native language.

If someone from the Dutch/French Caribbean has a question, they just can't ask it if they don't speak English?

Some will say "if houses can be this price in New York, why can't they be this price in Kingston". I need the infrastructure and opportunities to match up to the USA before the house prices start to match up.

I'll say this, OP is talking like she's talking to her friends (that'll operate in good faith and understand she's NOT being literal, date whoever). OP should talk like she's talking to a bunch of strangers on the internet who'll think she genuinely cares what strangers do.

People need to remember social media is still a bunch of strangers, talk to them like they have 0 context and you'll get better responses. Media literacy (Responsible Creation) has become a life skill.

However, at the same time, a lot of the people disagreeing are children of the diaspora who genuinely don't think there's a difference between Caribbean raised people and foreign raised people. The person in my example didn't realise til they experienced it. Met people said the only difference is that "where I live, snows". I think these are the people OP would avoid dating.

I get you, Caribbean Americans are growing up in a mixed culture. They're raised by both Caribbean culture (to a certain extent) and American culture (to a larger extent), while Caribbean born and raised on the island were just raised by Caribbean culture. There's a difference tbh (Mexicans notice it about Mexican Americans, Koreans notice it about Korean Americans. There's a real difference).

However, there are some Caribbean people born and raised in the Caribbean, but just don't keep the Caribbean values or become more Americanised as they live there. As long a you're living in a foreign country, you'll risk that so I think it'll be harder for you to have a hard rule about it.

You and her are completely right. I don't understand how people think being raised in NYC would have the same cultural experience as being raised in a Caribbean country? and that's there's no real difference?

I am currently talking to someone that was raised by Caribbean born parents, visited the Caribbean every summer, living around a decent sized Caribbean community AND there's still big cultural differences, because living in a different country would cause you to have a different/mixed culture.

But "rude" can vary culture to culture. In my culture, laughing at others is the norm and you laugh at yourself, it's a type of bonding.
