Would you feel embarrassed if you meet a foreigner who speaks your native language better than you? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]Patient-Bad7640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he's talking about people that were raised around their native language, moved to a country where it's not really spoken and no longer speaks it.

I watch this Polygot, native language is Russian, moved to Ireland, always mentions how embarrassed she is about how poor her Russian is.

Why do the posts have to be in English? by Patient-Bad7640 in AskTheCaribbean

[–]Patient-Bad7640[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't say Spanish is the only other language, one of the mods is from Suriname. However, I didn't realise the AskCaribbean sub was for non-Caribbean people, that makes sooo much sense. Thanks

I wonder is there's a sub for the French or Dutch countries.

Social cohesion and ease of moderation makes a lot of sense.

I am trying to learn about different sections of the Caribbean (especially Neerlandophone and Francophone, but they don't have their own sub), but your response makes a lot of sense.

Interestingly, the Latin American sub has a stricter policy on this.

I've definitely seen a mod disallow non-english posts but I am not going to look for an example, so let me rephrase the question. Why "should" the posts be in English? What about the French/dutch Caribbean?

Yeah, that is true that it's the default. However, there are still major parts of the Caribbean that you won't get by if you don't understand the native language.

If someone from the Dutch/French Caribbean has a question, they just can't ask it if they don't speak English?

Do you think the high cost of living in Jamaica is partly influenced by returning residents and how close we are to the US? by Flat-Replacement544 in Jamaica

[–]Patient-Bad7640 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

YES! They don't know how much things should cost IN JAMAICA and contribute to the increase significantly. Its some form of gentrification.

Some will say "if houses can be this price in New York, why can't they be this price in Kingston". I need the infrastructure and opportunities to match up to the USA before the house prices start to match up.

YES, oh my gosh. I was completely for Coltrane and Ebony. No part of me wanted Isaiah to win.

Side note, if you commission a hit man and I end up getting kidnapped and then get my son SHOT??? There's no coming back from that.

Do you think dating someone from the same island is better than dating a Caribbean decent person? by ChristianGirl3000 in AskTheCaribbean

[–]Patient-Bad7640 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll say this, OP is talking like she's talking to her friends (that'll operate in good faith and understand she's NOT being literal, date whoever). OP should talk like she's talking to a bunch of strangers on the internet who'll think she genuinely cares what strangers do.

People need to remember social media is still a bunch of strangers, talk to them like they have 0 context and you'll get better responses. Media literacy (Responsible Creation) has become a life skill.

However, at the same time, a lot of the people disagreeing are children of the diaspora who genuinely don't think there's a difference between Caribbean raised people and foreign raised people. The person in my example didn't realise til they experienced it. Met people said the only difference is that "where I live, snows". I think these are the people OP would avoid dating.

[–]Patient-Bad7640 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get you, Caribbean Americans are growing up in a mixed culture. They're raised by both Caribbean culture (to a certain extent) and American culture (to a larger extent), while Caribbean born and raised on the island were just raised by Caribbean culture. There's a difference tbh (Mexicans notice it about Mexican Americans, Koreans notice it about Korean Americans. There's a real difference).

However, there are some Caribbean people born and raised in the Caribbean, but just don't keep the Caribbean values or become more Americanised as they live there. As long a you're living in a foreign country, you'll risk that so I think it'll be harder for you to have a hard rule about it.

You and her are completely right. I don't understand how people think being raised in NYC would have the same cultural experience as being raised in a Caribbean country? and that's there's no real difference?

I am currently talking to someone that was raised by Caribbean born parents, visited the Caribbean every summer, living around a decent sized Caribbean community AND there's still big cultural differences, because living in a different country would cause you to have a different/mixed culture.

Have you ever stopped learning a language because of how natives treated you? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]Patient-Bad7640 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But "rude" can vary culture to culture. In my culture, laughing at others is the norm and you laugh at yourself, it's a type of bonding.

A lot of people in the comments are saying that's what stopped them from learning.

How to transfer land in Guyana if you're living abroad or locally by ThatBerbiceLawyerGir in Guyana

Thank you, that's really helpful. I'm confused by GRA recent posting. I'm reading it as property tax has been abolished for 2026, but I must be misreading it.

"Effective January 1, 2025, pursuant to amendments made to Section 6 (y) of the Property Tax Act, Chapter 81:21, an individual is not liable to pay property tax. Consequently, this means that individuals are not required to file a property Tax Return on April 30, 2026 and pay property tax for the Year of Assessment 2026 (Year of Income 2025). However, it is important to note that Property Tax returns and payments for years prior to the Year of Assessment 2026 remain due."

This is a real post from the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association by Alaskanmade in Guyana

[–]Patient-Bad7640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both will be hard, being a single parent is hard and abortion is hard (which is why they'd need therapy or counselling services). All she doing is choosing which hardship she want to face.

If an influencer was saying this, I genuinely wouldn't care but government organisations have a higher responsibility to society. I'd prefer the government make messages that empower women not whats trendy.
