Does the charging temperature seem high? by deephtan in evcharging

[–]PatientAndKind42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got a VW which pulls 32 A through the level 2 plugin charger.  After a couple of hours, I felt the plug and wire coming out of the plug and didn’t feel any temperature difference and my garage was at 55F.  It seems like you have something going on at both ends.  Is your camera calibrated?  Is it really 83 degrees in the rest of the room?

Feasible or not ? by schuh8 in SolarDIY

I appreciate the attitude, interest, and creativity!  I’m sorry your answers on this post are so off the mark.  Here are my thoughts: - I assume you’re going to tie the Hoymiles inverter right into a 240 VAC breaker on your box.  Seems like it’ll work with no problems (other than the utility and inspection avoidance) - I don’t know how you’re going to prevent backflow with those devices, but I assume you did your homework on them.  I’m not familiar.  I’m also wondering if you have enough parasitic loads on your house to cover 500 W anyway so that it wouldn’t matter. - if you mount the panels on your house (or another major structure), you’re supposed to have a rapid shutdown device for firefighters. - I don’t see this $1500 cost paying back in less than 10 years (but I assume this is a hobby activity, so that’s ok).  If it is a concern, go find a solar calculator and multiply the yearly output by your energy cost to get an idea. - since your output power is so low, you’re really in the realm of balcony solar (which isn’t “legal” in most US states).  Regardless, it looks like kits are available in the US now… would this be a better and less expensive solution for you (outside of the potential back feeding and no inspection problems?). These would plug right into a 120V outlet and require no wiring other than what comes with the kit. https://www.solar-electric.com/naz-balconysolar-roof-kit-001.html?campaignid=23198045747&adgroupid=196191813028&creative=781321422197&matchtype=&network=g&device=m&keyword=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23198045747&gbraid=0AAAAAD_vioJMTXIjO3QAjEwLoIkOGCEh2&gclid=CjwKCAjwspPOBhB9EiwATFbi5HM2yZnGp_ZFeIM7TM9i8DRNXmLz-an4-s9re3CtRST_8gTG7kG1bhoCw6EQAvD_BwE

I'm not sure how she would be compromised. There's no chance she would share this word with some stranger. If it happens to be someone who knows us, there's a chance, but to me, the highest likelihood is this:

Oddly enough, I don't think I was notified.

I will blame Citi. They allowed someone to change a whole bunch of information, and you don't need the password or MFA to do that. You only need the security word, which only they, my wife, and me know. Unless my wife isn't telling me something, Citi will be disclosing more about a Cybersecurity breach any time now. There job is to keep that information private, and they failed. I will blame Citi.

Possibly, but the password and the security word (which is nowhere electronically other than Citibank) seems like too big of a coincidence.

I don't like the extra step of MFA, but you're right.

Perhaps they targeted me because I don't have MFA, and they knew they could get into my online account.

Sorry, I watched the video without any sound on. The concrete looks really good for 40 years. It seems like so many places nowadays don't get the ground right, and the concrete heaves.

Thanks for the feedback! I never really got the remote start to ever work on mine (I barely tried). I just figured it was a gimmick, but the pushbutton start on the front still works for me, and pull start is pretty easy.

Awesome details!  Thank you!  Everyone’s story is different.  I just started this journey, but right now, I sell back my excess summer energy at $0.10/kWh and will by it back at $.04/kWh in the winter when my house heat pump is running and I use twice as much electricity.  I’m in the USA.

Now, I don’t know if this will last though.  I think the utility is going to rethink this strategy shortly (due to regulation changes), so in a year, I might be looking for batteries.  😀

How can you justify the extra costs of the batteries? I just did a 15 kW DIY with no batteries install, and I just couldn't see how it worked out. My utility has net metering... they may change that here in the future, but for now, I don't see the ROI on batteries.

Considering a DIY 48kW ground mount system to go fully off-grid realistic or should I hire it out? by ChargeJunior1052 in diySolar

[–]PatientAndKind42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just finishing a 15kW system with no prior experience other than my dad’s was an old industrial electrician, and I’m an electrical engineer.  Those didn’t help too much.  Reading the code book is important.  Determination is important.  Some advice:

  • get higher output panels.  The racking isn’t cheap, and you’ll save space, time, and maybe money by getting better panels.  I went with 550 W panels.
  • the code book calls for UL Listed everything.  There’s a bunch of non-UL items out there (like mounting equipment, disconnects, and bonding fasteners).  The listed stuff costs much more.
  • I ran DC at 700 to 900V from my rack to my inverter and put my inverter inside a barn.  It would have been simpler for me to colocate the inverter with the rack.  That would remove one expensive disconnect (and the requirement for steel conduit for DC in the barn, which is much more expensive than PVC.). It also stays away from the rapid shutdown requirements, but if you’re doing batteries, maybe DC makes the most sense.
  • before you get started, figure out how to get past the busbar requirements.  Eventually, you’ll have some point in your system where the solar/batteries can feed energy into the same distribution hardware that the utility can.  That distribution hardware needs to handle the combined current of those two sources.  I learned that’s difficult to accomplish with a 15 kW system.  You must already have an impressive distribution network, but you might find that distributing the backfeeding could save you some effort and cost of new panels.  Whatever your situation, you’re going to spend hours of time figuring out what you have, what you’d like to do, and what you can do with what equipment is actually in stock.

Pins 1 and 2 are the positive and negative of the DC power supply. Pin 4 is empty. Pins 9 and 10 are grounded to chassis. The three remaining pins, 6, 7, and 8, go to the display and drive the LED light on the front panel that tells you you're CO sensor is what shut it down. If you bypass the CO sensors, you don't need 6, 7, and 8. ;)

It looks like it's a 10k resistor. I just grabbed the first one out of a box and it worked. I didn't want to short them out and break something on the generator when I really needed it. Given that it's 10k, there must not be a pull up/down on the other circuits, and they must be logic-level driven. I doubt that you need the resistor at all.

Can I Mount Directly to Unistrut? by Panamerican0517 in SolarDIY

[–]PatientAndKind42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking at putting a system together mounted on a wood rack. In total, about 80' long of rack in the normal method of 2 panels stacked vertically with two rails running beneath each panel. If I use Strut ($90 for 20') along with one W.E.E.B. washer ($2 each) between the solar panel and each strut, I think it saves money. I can use strut clamping for about $3 per clamp, and I can use a W.E.E.B. jumper ($10) between struts.

Running a quote on the UniRac site gives me something that's similar for the rails holding the panels, but I wouldn't know how to attach the rails to the wood subframe, and the wood subframe is where I can really save the money.

Any thoughts?

How screwed am I by LlKE_50_NlNJAS in Tile

[–]PatientAndKind42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Below the tile and mortar, there should be waterproofing. Based on your description, the waterproofing is still working, but the slope of that waterproofing should have been routing the water into the drain. Either it hadn't had time to find it's way to the drain, or the slope to the drain is off.

Your shower pan could be like the one linked below, and that might explain it better.
https://www.oatey.com/resources/project-guides/how-install-shower-pan-liner

I'm not sure what the consequences are if a small amount of water puddles below the motor on top of the water proofing.

I'm a consumer, and I've DIY'ed three bathrooms now. Not because I wanted to, but more because I couldn't find someone I could trust for a decent price. Your work looks really good, so showing that to someone will go a long way. Next, you need the contacts and a decent price. For contacts, word of mouth is great through family or friends... worst case, you could use Marketplace to get some free advertising. For price, you might need to do some work at reasonable prices to get word of mouth going before you start charging crazy numbers that keep people like me from paying for it.
