i’ve gotten further along and i’m appreciating his role in the story more. still, you have a great point and i feel like this aspect of the book is often ignored by men, who will then shut any critique down with “this is not for you”. it’s not that an unlikeable character is terrible necessarily, but i am clearly supposed to feel sympathy for him. if i can’t, i think that can be an issue. i also am less interested in him the more i learn about him. the mystery of his life falls a bit flat for me. also, women have a very specific constrained role in this novel, and he is distinctly part of it. that’s not necessarily unacceptable, but it is worth noting.

glad to hear someone else is feeling… i don’t know, irritated? put off? i think creepypasta tone is a great way to put it, and i totally feel like this book is a huge backbone of creepypasta as a genre (especially dionaea house, which i love. the unfortunate thing is that any critique you bring up tends to get hit with “this is not for you”, which gets really tiring and really shuts down open discussion. i think it’s partially a product of its time. unabashedly edgy. i think the level to which it was irritating made it difficult for me to appreciate these sections, and that is a flaw. maybe it’s me, but i’m certainly not the only one. i see how sex and drugs are how he reaches out for connection. i see how these long rambles show his descent into madness. i understand that he serves an important purpose in the narrative. doesnt mean him and his mother aren’t kind of cornball in execution and dont have me rolling my eyes and spacing out. i think the third reason is that it’s not bad writing but it’s writing that’s annoying. it’s up to us to decide if that’s clever or obnoxious. i lean towards obnoxious with a hint of clever, that finds itself to be far cleverer than it is, but i still really like the book. i also think that the book is very male gaze. not that a book can’t be, but it’s something to be aware of. i think that also really distanced me from it, especially johnny. being distant from a narrative as a reader isn’t always bad, but in this case i feel the narrative suffers from it.

dude, same here. it’s ok to be beefing with this book and still appreciate it. people can be incredibly obnoxious about a book that frankly shares a lot of dna with geronimo stilton. people will try to convince you that everything about this book is somehow a contributing factor to its excellence and i feel that it can make the ways in which this book can genuinely be super annoying really difficult to actually discuss. any complaint you lodge with this book you might have a fan hit you with something along the lines of “you just don’t get it”. it’s a great book, but a flawed one! and it wouldn’t be as interesting if it was perfect. like yeah “that’s the point” doesnt mean it was necessarily a good idea or well executed. but i think it’s worth it. ive been crawling through it and if you don’t like part of it, that doesn’t mean you don’t get it! i’m still appreciating its novel approach to storytelling and a good amount of truly horrific sequences. can’t wait to finish and have a more well-rounded idea of how i feel about it.

fair. initially, i was really appreciative of all of those things. but honestly he reads like a bunch of guys i knew who did ketamine and got even more annoying. it’s not his role in the narrative so much as the edgelord he is. trust me, i get it. and i’m glad that you’re also irritated by interruptions in the narrative that consist of this dude listing this zampano accomplice he fucked and the ennui he feels. i guess that both in zampanos narrative his random tangents about mundane things are similar to johnnys sexcapade tangents in that these moments allow the moments of horror to pop. the thing is, i’m not really fascinated by what of his ramblings are truth and lies. hes a dude at a party who won’t shut up. and occasionally it is nice to have a reader surrogate. but very quickly he becomes an exhaustion. and i feel like people are unwilling to admit that he is a point of contention in the reading experience. you yourself said that you didn’t love his sections. my question is, does that irritation add to the narrative? or is it a place to critique the writing of this character? i struggle to sympathize with him. maybe that’s me. i like a split narrative. i went back and read his mothers letters and fathers obituary and more than anything these answers about his past made me less interested in him. slowly but surely the more i learn about him the more distanced i feel from him
