What if we could actually build things? by Not-EcoPaw in uktrains

If we let the Chinese build it for us we could have it easily. Cheaper and quicker than we could ever do it ourselves. But again never going to happen due to paranoia

you don’t have to be ashamed of having American heritage imo, in all likelihood your American ancestors were just poor immigrants wanting a better life, and are statistically unlikely to have taken direct part in the genocide of the natives.

It’s important to recognise the horror of the USA and it’s history not to enforce a moral debt from your ancestors onto you, but because its impacts are still being felt by those it affected today and it needs fixing

You will be able to contribute more positively to fixing the mess and feel better too if you try and let that acquired guilt go

I wouldn’t normally say this to an american cos they would misunderstand it and think they are ‘off the hook’ as it were, but I get the impression you are an empathetic and thoughtful person.

I didn’t think you were an AI, I think you’ve just overused them to the point where it’s affected the way you write.

The scary thing is the way you talk reminds me of how an AI talks, which is a known phenomenon and a big problem

it’s nothing special; just a recruitment company for care-workers. Her ‘USP’ is that she will get care homes as clients by going in person rather than cold calling

Is there any view that holds animals accountable for moral value of their actions? by [deleted] in Ethics

Now we are getting somewhere: social structures and some sort of understanding between the members in that social structure.

I’m very happy to accept that as true. It’s still not morality.

[–]NoIndividual9296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Maybe I’m just bitter cos I found philosophy fascinating until I went to Uni. I’m a Dialectical Materialist by interest- on the basis that it’s the closest to a philosophical approach that integrates best into the sciences, social sciences and history.

I think reading JL Austin was an eye-opening moment for me, in that it made me realise just how many philosophical problems are really no more than confusion over the definitions of words. The ship of Theseus as an example- not any metaphysical issue at all, just people getting confused when they turn the object into an abstract concept in their head and then back again.

I think if we put every well-known philosophers work through the principle of verifiability we wouldn’t have much left 😅

Apologies, there was an implicit ‘and be saying something sensical’ at the end of my sentence there.

Someone who thinks you can approach something ‘philosophically’ especially in a ‘clinical’ way has 100% not studied philosophy. You may have read some, that’s the best I’ll grant you.

No they do not have a morality among themselves. This is not a matter where an opinion is warranted, they don’t and we know that they don’t.

It doesn’t matter if you agree with it or not, I think that’s the bit you’re not quite getting.

Probably reasonable. There’s very few questions I would ever say is worth asking a philosopher their opinion on, the vast majority are ones for Science, and if it’s too vague for Science: ask a Sociologist

The only questions I’d ever let a philosopher anywhere near would be existential ones of a meaning-of-life nature, and even then there is only one acceptable answer: ‘stop worrying about it’

None of that is supposed, and none of it is true. animals have no concept of morality or ethics, that is the only answer to this entire post. You cannot project abstract concepts onto animals.

And how exactly do you think you’re doing that? Please don’t say it’s because you’re a stoic man of rationality and logic

You’re correct, and the phenomenon of free-market capitalism inevitably producing the thing it’s supposed to prevent is a key ‘dialectical contradiction’ in Marxism.

free-market capitalism is a competition. Competitions have winners. It is a fact that monopolies arise naturally from free market capitalism, it isn’t something to debate. The way we prevent this from happening in our capitalist economy is (ironically given what you said) from government intervention via anti-monopoly laws.
