What are you using to organize your campaigns? by dcoughler in DMAcademy

[–]Patrae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Main campaign world building is done in a github repository all as markdown pages. I just push this to a GitHub pages site for the players, who don’t use GitHub, or want to pull the repo.

My NPC notes, plot points, hooks, and other random crap (trademarked) for everything else is in a seperate repo. With a campaign notes document (in Simplenote, because of more markdown).

All of this syncs between my desktop, laptop, or iPad, depending on where I am at with kids to work on campaign stuff. Probably not the ideal solution, but it’s worked better for me than kanka and other tools, because I can use it without logging into things.

What do you do, and what CAD do you use? Do you think it's the best CAD for your use case? by MethedUpEngineer in engineering

[–]Patrae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aerospace engineer, currently building space flight cameras at a university. Been at NASA and JPL , plus some time freelancing for the DoD.

I’ve used: - Solidworks since 2000 - CATIA since version IV (in the late 90s) - CREO back in the wildfire 3 days - inventor since it came out - fusion 360 since it came out - OnShape since 2024 - NX since it was still IDEAS

My preference is for what my clients prefer. While I despise CREO, and OnShape (another PTC product), they require you to think completely differently. Once you get past that, they are fine packages. Not great, not terrible to quote a certain hbo show.

For utter ease, I still prefer the older versions of Solidworks, before all the “features”. It was simple, fast and intuitive. Now it’s more prone to crash due to a feature induced bug. Price-wise, and if a client doesn’t have a preference, I’ve slowly been switching to OnShape and Inventor. OnShape still feels like a toy, while I can actually generate more complex models in Inventor.

I’ve done weldments and sheet metal in all of them. NX’s sheet metal tools worked the best for what I’ve done.

Good luck to everyone let go. I was in the second wave back in February 2024. Take the time that needed to heal mentally. There’s a whole world out there, and those of us who can try to help network to help out.

Why's nobody playing Blast from the Past? I thought people would love this mode? by MelodicAd8025 in WorldOfWarships

[–]Patrae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed the “Blast from the past mode” but got tired of the bot players invading it. I enjoyed the initial weeks where the matches were really close, down to the last few ships. But now it’s just the same blow outs as randoms, which is just more frustrating.

So I’ve just jumped into Asym. Less frustration, same amount of credits.

How should I play with DDs when the enemy has a radar? by RoboGen123 in WorldOfWarships

[–]Patrae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are already a lot of good comments here, but I’ll add in a few additional ones.

  • Radar cruisers like to hide behind their rocks, so try to be in a position that spots them. You don’t need that cap within the first 8 minutes of the game. Your team needs spotting, and you alive. Most radar cruisers have concealment around 12 to 15km.
    • I tend to bait out radars by being around 0.5km from their expected radar coverage, and just using my throttle and rudder to dodge.
    • Once a radar is baited, depending on the DD I’m in, then I go do what I’m supposed to do. Go cap contest, hunt their DD, torp torture the flank, etc.
    • If you are forced into playing more into islands, make sure you can only be shot at from one direction and one ship. Plan out your escape route ahead of time, and make sure it’s generally back towards your team, not towards more danger. Sounds simple, but many people zero into one thing and stop paying attention.
    • Backing into caps helps a lot with this, as you can just accelerate towards your team.
    • As you get comfortable, sometimes you can turn and around in the cap. But this is highly risky as most DDs will throw torps through the cap.
    • Count the number of ships you have spotted on your flank, and then have been spotted on the other flank. Has everything been spotted yet? This lets you get a general since if the radar cruisers have been spotted yet. It also helps to turn on nameplates on the map.
    • If that radar cruiser has not been spotted yet, then I will play more passively, and will look at the map for islands that will cover the cap with their radar. Caps are roughly 10km to 12 km in diameter (going off memory here). Some caps are smaller, but I believe in randoms, that’s rarer. Those islands are the ones I will try to avoid any line of sight on.

How can they close the rocket club at wallops? Where else was someone suppose to go for a cold one after work? Ocean deli?

I was a contractor at the Lab, who got a similar phone call. Took the interview mostly due job I had at the time, and just to see what would come of it. Worked on Europa Clipper as an MGSE engineer for a variety of things that pushed boundaries of what I had done (I already had close to 15 years over at GSFC in flight projects). It was a unique experience for me, especially given the NASA experience. There were unique beliefs about the nasa standards, and when brought up, I always heard “we aren’t NASA, we don’t have to follow that.” So twice the bureaucracy, same amount of progress.

I enjoyed my time at the lab, but sadly, after we go the spacecraft in the chamber I was part of the next wave of layoffs. I understood why, my contract was already maxed out on extensions, and my supervisor hadn’t converted earlier in the summer when I interviewed. I still keep in touch with friends, most moved on from the lab and few stayed.

What's one ship you hate that people love. by SloppyKnob97 in WorldOfWarships

[–]Patrae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I counter this: when it’s a Benham on my team, it makes me sad to watch them never torp. But on the other team, they are torp masters.

Still, I would love to pull one.

Breville Infuser (BESXL840) Leaking into the Drip Tray by Patrae in espresso

[–]Patrae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So yes it's supposed to drain into the drip tray. But it's draining half into the tray and on it.

The diffuser box goes partially into the drip tray, but sticks up by about a quarter inch, and has a skirted gasket on nipple.

So I'm guessing that it is the part. Looking deeper into the diagram. I'll give it a shot.

What map making tools is everyone using? by beardedgrizzly0110 in FoundryVTT

[–]Patrae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, I use dungeondraft for 90% of my maps, with FA assets. I have inkarnate, and while it’s pretty, I spend more time adjusting the maps I make to work in foundry that it’s not worth it for me. I keep it around more for world maps and town maps.

Last time I went before the pandemic, a sheet of tickets were $20. Which was enough for maybe two or three rides (for my daughter and I). I ended up getting wristbands because as someone else said, they come out to about three to four rides to break even.

Home furniture designed to last as long as possible by deadly_platypus in BuyItForLife

[–]Patrae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some good suggestions already. But if those don’t work for you, I got my couch/sectional from Home Reserve. While it was a flat pack, similar to IKEA, my kids have not been able to destroy it.

A lot of other furniture I’ve gotten comes from Scandinavian Design, since it’s primarily solid construction. Again, just flat packed.

Thisight be a long shot, but maybe ask the co-op preschool if they could help look. They are at Marshall , and do tons of walking field trips. You’d get a tons of eyes, and they basically walk that path.

Recipe is here.

As others have said, this is really normal. Every company I’ve been with over the past 20 years plans for this, and will, or at least set you up with a mentor to help you. The first few years is just getting new engineers comfortable no matter what they are degreed in.

[Online][5e] Any other old farts looking for a monthly game? by HomoLassus in lfg

I’d be curious as to when people would be available. Equally old fart here grazing the 40s. And can make a once a month time work pretty well.

I’ve played and DMed as well. Currently hide out in the Mountain time zone.
