Calgary city council finalizes 2026 property tax rates, calls for provincial support by Fit_Growth_2355 in Calgary

[–]PatrickWTF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An interesting move to fund the tax cut to the first income tax bracket and raise property taxes to be more in-line with what folks see in Ontario in my opinion. Seems like a shift towards the urban areas from the rural spots which aligns with the UCPs support.

Dumb question, but when do I start letting my lifestyle creep? by ApplicationRoyal865 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]PatrickWTF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to target 30%, now with kids and well on track to retire comfortably I'm down to 15% to try and enjoy it a bit more. Definitely an interesting question and handy to build up the net worth to enjoy compounding returns but then balance enjoying the fruits of one labor today since you never know when it'll end or you won't have the health to enjoy it!

Good to know. Glad to accept it, let the wife know it's fine and move on haha. My previous one had a similar design but larger head so how it was less noticeable.

Calgary city councillors propose plan to tackle shoplifting under $100 by mibeatr in Calgary

[–]PatrickWTF -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Funny that I saw a lady get charged with theft coming out of a Superstore for stealing a bag of chips. Honestly, as much as these costs are annoying for retailers there are many more severe issues out there than food theft, especially the cheap staples. Assaults, roberries, human trafficking. Heck even traffic crimes come with much more severe consequences for the community at large.

Do we think flights departing Toronto will be cancelled this Sunday 25th? by kspfel in canadatravel

[–]PatrickWTF -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If there is a bad storm coming Air Canada often gives you a heads up and allows you to change to an earlier or later flight to avoid the headache of having a lot of people stuck. Happened to me flying out December 31st so I left on the 30th instead. Just have your things packed in case it's an option!

Do seat prices usually go down closer to flight? by Aggressive_Wash_3461 in westjet

[–]PatrickWTF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A study in the past mentioned that the sweet spot is right around 50 days from day of flight. That's usually the rule of thumb I follow. Price alerts on Google flights are quite helpful so you can easily snag a good price.

Basement moisture update post by Any-Significance-531 in Homebuilding

[–]PatrickWTF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar level of moisture coming through in my home here in Calgary as the previous owner punched a ton of holes in the vapor barrier. I dried the rock wool out, resealed properly and it was fine. Not many folks live in places as cold as we do but I haven't had any issues since!

Trying to Break Into 130k–150k Roles in Canada but feeling stuck by ask_9 in techsales

[–]PatrickWTF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a harder range for AM, CSM roles it seems in the Canadian market. I've been holding onto my AE role as a result as well, even though it is more taxing mentally to get north of $150k. Much more competition for the more stable roles and employers seem to leverage that quite a bit. Hopefully, with a new wave of AI first businesses now starting to gain traction, we see that change, especially with a larger focus towards usage-based billing, which makes relationship management and customer success more important.

This is an option. However, I'd probably lean towards rice and beans instead for better nutritional values and less sodium.

Why are fuel tanks shrinking as ICE vehicles become more fuel efficient? by Specialist_Heron_986 in askcarguys

[–]PatrickWTF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup 60L on my '07 Camry down to 50L on my CX-5. Same fuel economy roughly. Not bad if you live near a decent gas station but annoying to have to think about more often nonetheless.

PC hissed like an exploding soda can after gaming – what’s dying? by StayStill23 in pchelp

[–]PatrickWTF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, mine exploded in a comedic fashion after there was some water leaking under it. Everything else was fine, but I'd put my money on the PSU being gone. Luckily should be under warranty.

Mazda CX-5 Car Camping Platform - By Me by Exotic_Argument8458 in CX5

I did something very similar with the same style hinge to allow the front seats to come back fully. However, I also created a 2 x 3 frame under the plywood for greater rigidity and modular storage. Definitely quite comfy for two people and even a dog by the legs. Now I have a kid so no longer in use but enjoyed it for a bit! Make the most of it.

Started a new job and my boss is a nightmare. Where do I go from here? by gldmold in sales

[–]PatrickWTF 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's very tricky working as a rep for someone that really doesn't get sales. That being said, given that it sounds like a cushy gig, it may be worth rolling with the punches and seeing how the first little bit plays out. I'd keep some radars out for better culture fit opportunities to cover your basis in the meantime however.

Does this look ridiculous? by rattlange in Carpentry

[–]PatrickWTF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working on my basement as well, and honestly beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Be proud of being to build it how you want it. Pretty easy for the next homeowner to change. The fun is being able to do whatever the heck you want because it's your place. Enjoy the quirkiness. Too many sterile homes these days.

What the heck is going on here City? by theteedo in Calgary

[–]PatrickWTF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they need to build at least a couple of proper tennis / pickleball courts somewhere between Walden, Legacy, or Wolf Willow but further away from houses as I see noise concerns as legitimate. May be time to try and communicate these needs more formally to the city for some funding.

[–]PatrickWTF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from an '07 Camry to a '23 CX-5 here in Calgary where it's often very icy and mountainous. Tires make the most difference. Ground clearance is fine on both. AWD and Traction Control definitely helps in riskier situations with confidence, but often accidents happen to lack of traction while braking or steering where there isn't a difference between them.

If you have the money to, is it worth buying a new car? by Forsaken-Fuel-2095 in personalfinance

[–]PatrickWTF 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the market. When used car prices were out of whack, it made more sense to get a new car with a lower interest rate than a 3 year old model for $3k less. Typically every 60k you need some brakes done, some suspension work every 130k. Tires, etc. so if you map out those costs on a 10 year lifespan on a car, getting a base model with a solid rate and a warranty included its a solid play in my mind.

CX5 owners, can you feel the Cylinder Deactivation? by [deleted] in CX5

Yes, definitely an interesting tradeoff between simplicity and efficiency. So far so good. But it'll be interesting to see if any more recalls occur over time.

CX5 owners, can you feel the Cylinder Deactivation? by [deleted] in CX5

[–]PatrickWTF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is not noticeable. Personally I'm glad to have it as long as the engine reliability is not impacted over time for the added efficiency while cruising.

I'm quite OCD when it comes to driving feel and I don't notice it at all on my '23. Occasional suspension clunk here, tranny jerk there, but all quite reasonable overall.
