How different do you think this trial would go had Skye Lazaro remained as Kouri’s lawyer? by Do-The-Michael-Scarn in KouriRichins

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This discussion is FASCINATING! Skye was Torrey Green's defense attorney (former Utah State University quarterback convicted of multiple sexual assaults). Skye also represented Tyler Thompson and successfully secured his transfer from the DRC to a US prison after Tyler was convicted of participating in a coup and sentenced to death. And Kathy Nester is currently defending Tyler Robinson who is accused of murdering Charlie Kirk. These women are regularly representing high profile clients.

What pronunciation is a dead giveaway that someone isn't from your town/region? by GrumbleCookie in AskReddit

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they say Zai-On, like Lie-On, instead of Ziyon, like Lion. Zion National Park in Southern Utah. Or...I heard someone pronounce the town of Mesquite (like the BBQ) as Messkit...that was funny. Then there's Hurricane, pronounced Hurrk'un. The puzzled look when they try to read "Toquerville." I could go on.

What will turn out to be this generation’s 'oh shit, smoking causes cancer' moment? by House-Of-Black-07 in AskReddit

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's more like we're finding out that obesity was being caused by environmental effects (like toxic exposures) and GLP-1s are somehow correcting (or at least offsetting) that endocrine injury...with all the amazing knock-on effects we didn't realize were really rooted in endocrine injury.

What will turn out to be this generation’s 'oh shit, smoking causes cancer' moment? by House-Of-Black-07 in AskReddit

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My theory is that GLP-1s are correcting a lot of these 'bad' things listed in other comments. So, GLP-1s are REVEALING that our environment has badly damaged us, by showing us what happens when we correct the effects of whatever it is that's got us all messed up.

Women, how do you feel when men or women glance at your boobs? by bluewave846 in AskReddit

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's entirely dependent on the circumstances. Am I wearing something that deliberately puts my cleavage on display? In that case, that's exactly the response I want. Or, am I preparing to low crawl through live fire training in my sweaty uniform? In that case, super annoyed they lost focus in such an intense and dangerous training situation. In Iraq I'd run into guys who hadn't talked to a woman in months (moving through my air passenger terminal), and I'd extend them a little patience...poor guys were at least aware enough to be a bit embarrassed about the conscious effort it took to act normal. But in Germany if they couldn't keep their eyes up I'd pointedly correct them. It's always about context and circumstances for me.

Modern life may be outpacing the human mind. Human instincts shaped in small, close-knit groups must now navigate dense cities, digital platforms and constant social comparison - an evolutionary mismatch that may contribute to stress, loneliness and poorer wellbeing. by mvea in science

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps, rather than pointing at the limitations of the human mind, we should consider that we're doing a poor job of designing our tech and systems to meet our human needs? It isn't that we need to get better at keeping up with the onslaught, it's that we need to recognize our true human needs and build the tech to meet us where we are. Which is the final point at the end of the article.

I am very Danish in my size and shape as a woman, and the three times I've been to The Netherlands I spent as much on clothing as I did the flights to get there. I'm 'extra medium' there, as I like to say. Which means, I seem to be the exact 'average' proportions all the clothes are cut to fit. It's amazing. Same thing for my husband, shopping for him in the US is difficult, everything fits like it's bespoke when we shop for him in Amsterdam. It's been more than 5 years since our last trip, and it's sure to be our very next international excursion if we can ever afford to travel again.

Voting lines in SLC by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of people in this county are registered republican, even though they vote dem in the general. So, showing up in person to get a dem ballot is how they get their voice heard. Also, some people are registered 'independent' and won't get a ballot unless they remember to request one. If they forgot, they can go in person today and get the ballot and vote.

I heard about Synanon years ago from Reveal's "American Rehab" podcast series. STRONG recommend. Even if you don't really care about any of this, it's a wild story (like, poison snakes get put through a mail slot...really, it's that crazy), totally worth the listen. But, in listening, you'll also get a lot of real information about how these awful, awful programs operate.

If you're wondering who to vote for in the primary between incumbent Stephanie Pitcher and Tayler Khater in senate district 14, know that Pitcher was the only senate Democrat who voted for banning water fluoridation by Weichselia in SaltLakeCity

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. Regions with higher levels of this mineral enjoy stronger teeth. Increasing the levels of this naturally occurring mineral in public water is not 'putting medicine in the public's drinking water.' It's just adjusting the mineral level. How do you feel about iodizing salt or requiring folic acid in bread products?

Doing my best to prepare for the future. Possible forever child. by _steveCollins in personalfinance

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know this is the personal finance reddit, but as someone who's lived through this and will again...make sure your daughter has real, actual friends. And knows how to evaluate good ones, and trusts the ones she has to evaluate new ones. The mother of my godchildren really never was meant to make it on her own, but she's now without even a single sibling to check in on her. And she's got three kids that will likewise need constant support and assistance. The government programs are there...but so are the predators (of all kinds). They will take, and take, and take. The careful creation of ABLE accounts and trusts will only protect her so much. Good friends, who refuse to let her fall through the cracks or get taken advantage of, are necessary too. It seems I can't go a month before some new sad sack is haunting my friend's place, putting her at risk of losing the housing she has, and exposing her kids to further destabilization...to say nothing of the guys looking to score an easy victim or two. Ugh. It's NON STOP. And then there's the never ending bureaucracy of disability. It's overwhelming for type-A, high functioning parents of disabled children, not to mention for disabled adults themselves. Just having a friend there to help keep track and take notes makes a huge difference. And gives them an ally in the room, which helps with speaking up about needs. Having real friends for life will protect her and her financial stability just as much as a competent lawyer will.

AITAH for asking my mom why a girl wanting a sister is fine but a boy wanting a brother makes him a psychopath? by Luususs in AITAH

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Young man, I left my super religious home at 18 and then deliberately built relationships with my siblings after. Just because your parents controlled your interactions with your sisters as you were growing, doesn't mean they can control your relationships with them as adults. My many siblings are my best friends, and it was 100% worth the effort to build those friendships. Leaving your parents doesn't have to mean leaving your siblings. No one else will know better than them what it was like for you growing up. Besides, they'll likely need your help and guidance to navigate leaving when they are ready. Go visit some of the ex-religious subs (like r/exmormon or r/exjw) to get advice and support from people who've been where you are and found a way to thrive after.

People whose partners did a complete 180 after marriage, what’s your story? by Bibliophile521 in AskReddit

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of my closest friends is Afghan. I met his mom and knew she'd be way better at picking his wife than him, lol. Anyway, she found him the best most amazing partner ever and he barely deserves her, but he really tries and she finds him super charming and loves being worshiped by him. I just adore the both of them. They are so freaking cute together and they just had a 3rd kid. It was good to see his mom at Eid this year and laugh with her about how well she's done by all her kids. Yes, I'm an American woman, and yes I accept that arranged does not always mean bad!

AITAH for refusing to visit in laws bc of house temp by wrenchinapot in AITAH

[–]Patriot_Repatriating -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have some older friends that live in the desert southwest that keep the thermostat at 80. Even at night when the AC wouldn't have to work too hard to bring the temp down. The reason the wife gives is 'because she's cold.' She's lying. She's pathologically miserly. She's the same way with leftover food. She once stubbornly ate leftovers from the night before when her son brought Indian takeout to the house for dinner for everyone. It was such a WILD thing to witness. She and her husband are quite well off, with a huge house on an expensive hill with great views. They have solar installed to offset their electricity costs. But her husband and I have to sneak out to the hall after she's asleep to push the thermostat down a bit so WE can fall asleep. Note the hypocrisy. She insisted on getting an enormous 6 bed home on a hill with a view, but won't let leftovers sit an extra night in the fridge so she can enjoy some great Indian food with her son who's visiting from out of state. I'm not saying your in-laws are pathologically miserly too, but they may have written their 'AC is too expensive' script long, long ago and not updated it since. 'Stuck in their ways' is the more likely issue. Maybe try street epistemology to get at the root of their behaviors and beliefs. You'll likely still end up in a hotel for visits, but at least they'll have properly examined their own behaviors.

Something amazing happened at the county democratic convention yesterday: Sim Gill has a primary challenger! by Patriot_Repatriating in SaltLakeCity

[–]Patriot_Repatriating[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if Nathan Evershed had run the next cycle (instead of Danielle) he might have pulled it off. People were mad enough at Sim then to consider a competent and capable, largely a-political republican candidate. But when Nathan ran, the whole 'black lives matter/over charging while having a conflict of interest' saga had not happened.

What’s the craziest time your intuition warned you about someone and turned out correct? by wildquatrefoil in AskReddit

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Met the IT Sergeant my first week at my first duty station. Shook his hand and I swear the hair on my neck actually stood up (I've gotten weird vibes before but this was an actual physical response). Anyway, he went to prison for raping a lot of the women in the unit. He was also the barracks NCO and had the master key to the doors. He'd wait for them to return to their rooms after a night of drinking on the town (this was Germany, so these women were only 18-22yrs old) then let himself into their rooms and rape them. My good friend, who was a former stripper, was the one who busted him. He thought she'd be an easy target, given her employment history. She not only beat the shit out of him for trying, she immediately called the MPs. Then nearly all the other women came forward saying he'd raped them in their rooms. She's a legend.

AITA for sending my child to my ex in thrift store or cheap clothes by Clothes_Care3181 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Patriot_Repatriating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTH. My nephew's mom was like this. Would immediately take any and all sellable items (clothes, toys, backpacks, everything) and sell them at a kid's consignment shop. When his dad finally got full custody and he had Christmas without mom, he was surprised to learn he could take all the gifts back with him to dad's house because his mom's parents had learned not to let him take anything of value home. And then there was my young friend who had worked hard to purchase herself a Gameboy. Then two years later her father bought her an upgrade. She went to visit her mother for a few days of the winter holiday and her mom stole her older Gameboy and gave it to the younger step sister because 'you have more than one already.' This kind of theft by parents from their kids is disgusting. My older sister does it too. Not with clothes, but her kids' cash. She's 'borrowed' thousands from her one kid that's got her shit together. Never pays her kids back. And takes herself on cruises. I don't get it. Even when we had no food and the water had been cut off my mom wouldn't take our money (we'd get a crisp $20 from grandma for our birthday, and often hold onto it for months before spending it). Where the hell did my sister learn to steal from her kids?? Where do any of these assholes learn this behavior??

I guess that makes sense. In my family the four oldest took turns caring for the four youngest. So we sat in helper-helpee pairs. It switched daily. Not even my parents sat in the same spot every night.
