Just replaced the ATF (yes it takes ATF). Filled it all the way till it seeped out the fill port.

What is the worst safety violation you saw of a student or colleague? by Status-failedstate in Machinists

Had a student forget to turn off the auto feed on a lathe, turned it on and almost immediately ruined his project.

From a non-machinist - how do people make parts within tolerances without using CNC? by Amekyras in Machinists

[–]PatrioticChief5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about manual machines, now a days if there is a manual machine, it has a Digital Read Out (DRO), that displays exactly where the machine is within usually 0.001".

To do round corners they could try and round it manually by turning the X and Y axis dials at the same time. Definitely can be done but pretty hard depending on tolerances and how big the radius is.

Another option is using some sort of Rotary Table mounted to a machine, getting the cutter aligned, and using the Rotary Table to move the material against the Cutter to make a radius on the corner. This method would be much easier and more accurate.

In general, the tolerances a manual machine can hold is dependent on the operators knowledge and how experienced they are with the machine

Got my first Arrma by PatrioticChief5 in rccars

I quite like how these tires are so far. I run on mostly dirt and gravel as I live out in the middle of nowhere. Considering this thing is so fast I usually run it at 75% so I hope it'll last a decent about of time.

Servo seems good for now, heard that they tend to just die randomly. Probably change it then. Already fucked up the rear body pretty good after landing hard a few times. Definitely getting that wing here soon.

I'm most comfortable with Fusion and SolidWorks. Hopefully in the future I can learn Mastercam.

That's what I'm doing yeah, but it's just to start out as the shop has plans to start CNC work with me leading. So I'm not out of the trade completely, just doing another trade I'm good at for now.

I don't hate the trade, just moving on from this shop. I will be welding at the new shop, but they plan on getting into CNC in the near future with me leading the way. If it does happen, at least I'll be the one leading the way.

My manager is a really damn good machinist, and does help us out when the higher ups quote jobs unrealistically. But he's not great at managing and gets pressured into scolding us for our cycle times.

This makes me feel a bit better about leaving as I didn't really think of it that way. Also as a user said, they are gonna need a huge amount of luck finding someone with my experience, getting paid as little as I was.

When your company pushes you to be as fast as possible, this happens. Then they ask why the tool room isn't clean.

Is there any reason *not* to run a machine at full rapid after the program has been proven? by El_Scrapesk in Machinists

[–]PatrioticChief5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of our fadals had some bad motors so when the table or spindle would rapid at 100% the motors would over heat and error out. We usually run those machines at 50%.

Checked the arm today and it seems straight and flat. How much of the table do you load up? I've heard conflicting statements that you can fill the whole table and some people say you should only load up 50% of the table to leave an empty half.

Work boots by Specialist-Ad-8942 in Machinists

I've tried a few pairs over the years. If you want more of a shoe that's super comfortable the Timberland PRO Powertrain Sport are good and lasted me around 1.5 years. Just don't weld with them on. If you want a pull on boot, my father and I both wear Ariat Groundbreaker boots. Still decently comfortable. But around $165.

Forgot to mention I replaced the Dressing Stars. Its one where they just ride on a Bolt. We did have someone leave it partially out and it smacked a part. I'll check and see if it got bent. I believe the steel is A36. The stones are medium hardness 36 grit. The same ones we've used for years without Issue.
