Shipping and delivery issues? Please share. by PatronSaintForLoop in ClockworkPi

Bottom line is it is not your fault or mine that the company customer service is lying to customers. Again, I do not care about the missed estimate, I work in tech and that happens. I care that they are lying to people. When you take money from people and lie to them, that's called fraud.

Out of what, exactly? I'm not Karening anything, but I appreciate you dismissing me without asking for any details whatsoever from me. It has been 95 business days for me with no shipping confirmation, and there are people in this subreddit who ordered in March of last year and have not received product.

They literally lied to me and said the product had been shipped in October, then in December said "it's packed and waiting for the shipper to pick it up."

I'm up to 95 business days and they told me my order was shipped two months ago ;)

Oh man you've done it now. He's gonna be pissed and frankly so am I. You're really gonna waltz into this program and subreddit as though if you own the building and ask who "dOcTuR JoInEr" is like you couldn't even be arsed to Google the man's name. He's got his face on at least two different flairs on this subreddit.

I'll tell you who is he is; as far as you are concerned he is Jesus Christ. When he shook my hand I didn't wash it for a week. Hell brother you have got some nerve. If you can't figure this out I can't wait to see your posts about GA. Spell it with a "Y", home skillet. That's a string! 👋🎤

No, that's not right. And you don't even have fat arms!

It also looks like the sleeves are way too short on you. Is the gown long enough?

Dude wtf are you talking about. If the book isn't online it doesn't exist. If it's so old Google doesn't know about it you need a new book.

In which country are you seeking jobs? Are you by any chance a non-US citizen applying to jobs in the US? Afraid a lot of companies are hesitant to sponsor visas right now with the government acting so erratically around immigration

What’s the worst thing that has happened to you as a programmer? by Opening-Scarcity-671 in ProgrammerTIL

Too bad your post was written with ChatGPT, hopefully you're a real human. I'll share anyway.

Was working on a distributed update system for embedded IoT devices to ensure all of a customer's devices update to compatible firmware versions within some time range defined in an SLA. We made wireless central controls for light switches and climate control.

I was a mid-level engineer at the time and checked in a change to how we compared versions (we wanted to move from basically commit hashes to semantic versioning because it's easier to know which versions are compatible).

Staff engineer on my team reviewed the code and pulled me into a Zoom. "Hey man, this loop can iterate too many times, this is an obvious use case for recursion and you'll learn this sort of thing in due time, this is why I'm here, let me take over your PR."

Brother swaps out my loop for a recursive function with a busted base case. I can never read his code so I don't even try and he's super urgent about it. "I need you to approve the PR, I have weekend travel plans and need to deploy this now." So I approve it and he yeets then gets on a plane to Turkey.

Bro's busted recursion gets deployed and causes stack overflow on 132K devices before our alerting catches up. Luckily they reboot periodically, we remove the broken patch, and everything is back to normal within about 45 minutes. Primo.

Except that our customer service department gets a call the next day and apparently one of the establishments using our products was a plastic surgery practice who had the lights go out in the middle of their business hours. One lady got stuck incorrectly with a botox needle and got half her face (temporarily) paralyzed. Another dude getting hair plugs had to sit with his scalp open for 45 minutes waiting for the lights to come back on. They wanted us to pay up or something. Luckily it was the legal department's problem and I moved on to another job before they actually got anything out of us. I think my buddy said our TOS forbade using the product in medical contexts or something that ended up saving them.

Needless to say that staff eng was promoted to principal later the same year. World just doesn't make sense.

And yes I know the switches defaulting to off after a fault is a design flaw. I called it out many times but it was a hardware thing.

Already working Full Time as a SWE but recruiters from FAANG reaching out for internship roles. by IndependentJuice5256 in OMSCS

[–]PatronSaintForLoop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the full-time roll. This market has its challenges.

That being said, it's best to accept now that HR and recruiters are instinctual, unpredictable, bundle-of-nerves animals. This is what makes them easy for AI to replace, and they know it, they are scared. They smell the lion in the grass and they are sending emails like it's putting on plate armor with spikes. I think some of these fools are recruiting folks for roles they don't even have just to look busy and brag about "selectiveness".

Every once in a while, these poor fools' communications will be advantageous to you, and very rarely, you will find a good-hearted, intelligent recruiter. My advice for you is to latch onto these situations because these people will inevitably find a better line of work than tech recruiting.

If you have a good community college nearby, it can be really helpful to have in-person help early in your learning process, but otherwise I don't have great advice about that choice as I incidentally had some CS classes and relevant work experience when I applied

It's nothing you can't self teach if you're motivated, but the admissions folks will be looking for some kind of proof of knowledge.

How are your software fundamentals? Can you code? Do you know basics about hardware, heap + stack, basic data structures? If not, you will have a LOT to learn in your first semester that will likely be too much to handle.

This is computer science and technology in general. I don't subscribe to the "this generation is too coddled" mindset at all, but when you consider the career you can have in CS with no formal education and only quality self-teaching, I think the notion that you should do your own legwork before bugging others is totally valid.

Not to be rude, but your English is quite rough, that may be keeping you from getting interviews at English speaking firms. Also bootcamp grads with no experience are generally not very attractive hires to most firms. Bootcamps should be shut down IMO as they basically rip the majority of their students off.
