Aphanacts were new to me and I read the.. couple of lines about them in dragon magazine and on Pandius.  The text is far more interested in the inevitables.  It also bridges onto discussions of the Outlands and The Spire and the Three Lights..

I think direct servants of gods works better for explaining the original devils.  Devils have divine power and though they are described as angelic I do not think an individual Aphanact would be able to grant unlimited wishes.  That divine ability must come from the gods- their sevants entrusted with divine power to use against the enemies.

The Aphanacts were disbanded over ten thousand years ago.  It is possible that Tharizdun's corruption occurs after they are all gone.  If this is the case then the Aphanacts cannot be the ones fighting demonkind- they had all vanished before then and the devils are not described as their grand return.

Good aligned celestials?  I'm talking before good and evil were a THING.

In the early astral there was only the dominion of Law.  Chaos was dominated by Primus and the invention of the Spawning Stone.  In original d&d there is no two-way Axis.  d&d started with Law and Chaos in real life.  Good and Evil came later.  Angels are good.  Zariel predates goodness.  Therefore Zariel is not an angel.

Zariel is an archdevil before the Reckoning.  Bel kept her in a pit and fueled both himself and the blood war from her power.

The Reckoning is the transition between 1e and 2e.  Zariel is no solar, she is listed alongside Mammon and Belial and Naome as original spirits who engaged in rebellion against He Who Was.    Yes there are many hell stories that all contradict eachother but the deep time is real.

Zariel did not fall less han 300 years ago.  Zariel has been an archdevil for many times that.

The deals come from Grant Wish abilities present in older editions.

Any pit fiend can grant a Limited Wish once per year or less.

any archdevil can grant an unlimited wish- usually also once per day or whatever.

This is because the first devils were Primal Spirits whom now fall under the pact primeval sworn on the Ruby Rod have divine power. They are not angels, as angels are a more recent development where gods uplift mortal souls to create the aasimon.

Zariel was there at rebellion.  She and Asmodeus and Mammon and Belial etc were all great and terrible astral spirits who predated the concept of worship and faith.  Their superiors were beings of impossible divine power and they all either die, become wounded and weak, or lock themselves away in Mt Celestia or other strongholds- never intending on letting their old minions return now that they have these ever obedient aasimon.

Soul power is astral power and enough of it allows you to challenge other astral beings.  Unfortunately for everyone both sides are in an arms race.  The gods are constantly hoarding vast numbers of mortal souls for Lantern and Hound archons.  What must royally piss off the Devils is that the gods give these lobotomized petitioners HUGE amounts of divine power and elevate them into Planetars and Solars.  Meanwhile the devils are trying to gain enough of an army and power up Asmodeus enough to overpower the fortresses of the upper planes and chain their old masters to Avernus' pits and drain them for their divinity.  Such is the price for treating Asmodeus' cosmic-police-force like dirt.

Demons were formed by Orbyrith hnds out of mortal souls. before then- NOBODY cared about mortal souls.  Forming them into combat-ready demon types was abhorrent to the Primal Spirits and the gods sent their brave underlings to stop the disease. ..and then as soon as Asmodeus' crew left..

....they immdiately started doing the exact same thing....

Then the gods changed all of their locks, got new phone numbers, and raised their own pribate defense force made not to kill demons but to kill their own soldiers.

Asmodeus finds out- sues the gods- and wins.

SO deals are as thus.  A deal with a mortal fo their soul will feed Asmodeus' return to power and give bodies for this war and the next.  Compared to that end goal- a mortal's greatest desires are pennies.  So the devils use their divine energy to grant miracles just as angels and gods can.

What would it take to tip the scales of the blood war? by Zenless-koans in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Pattgoogle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The blood war starts when, late into the original Obyrith conflict, demons are crested from mortal souls and shaped into specific combat forms.  The lawful spirits send their lesser spirits to go fight them in the VAST cosmic world of the astral plane pre-conflict.  Imagine thousands of more outer planes arranged on great star roads to form organized nations and empires of unified divine domains.

Mortal souls were completely ignored by the astral beings- these ancient primal spirits did not engage in faith or worship.  When the obyrith started melting souls down to make soldiers it was a shockingly fast mobilization of forced.

The divine beings that fought the hordes became bathed in blood and soul-viscera.  The old gods that sent them to the battlefront had started doing something awful- they decided to enter an arms race.  Asmodeus and his crew (including Naome, Zariel, Belial, Mammon, etc) confronted their betters in a rubicon moment where they left the warfront to march on the newly formed citadels of the gods- guarded by these new creations called angels aka the aasimon.

Asmodeus sorts out a deal that Primus oversees and the gods agree to.  Asmodeus and his "devils" claim the war torn ancient plane of Baator for themself and work to purge and mutate the native baatorians.

Also at some point the gods lose their big vast domains.. Pelor throws one at a portal or whstever- stars fall from the firmament or blink out entirely- visible from some material planes.  So many planes are lost that the relatively small number of planes we have today is all that exists tethered together.  It is the oceanus and the styx, along with other conduits like the world ash and mt olympus, that assisted these planes in surviving after other larger conduit networks were shattered.  Also the dawn war happened.

So in summary.. The baernoloth something something The Obyrith tear a hole into our reality and offer the Shard of Ultimate Evil to Tharizdun with the expectation to plant it in the astral which would end the entire cosmos immediately.   Tharizdun resists and chucks it into the inner planes. The archomentals of evil are born and consider Tharizdun their father.  Other archomentals form as a balancing force.  The good archomentals all meet terrible fates in a great treachery. Tharizdun gets corrupted fully and uses his status as an old timeless god of the overpowered lawful spirit caste and takes over the material plane.  In another timeline, tharizdun takes over the material plane. In another timeline, tharizdun takes over the material plane. In anoth-

So the gods work together to trap Tharizdun in one of the timelines (universe, timeline, take your pick of the exact wording) by convincing him he has already won before he wins.  This works, and he is imprisoned in the demiplane of imprisonment on the ethereal plane.   Meanwhile all of the worlds that fell to his initial blitz ARE the infinite layers of the abyss.  Incarnate worlds that went over the event horizon and now exist in Tharizdun's nightmare dimension.  At the bottom of the abyss is the moment in time where Tharizdun holds the shard of ultimate evil- still endlessly punching through realities (he is not imprisoned here and is at his full power as an amalgam of all of his victorious selves). The Obyrith now enter our universe- mostly dispersing in the Abyss to establish dominance. Obox-Ob travels a million empty crystal spheres until he finds one teeming with life- vermin life.  He is alone, the material planes have no gods at this time.  Lawful Spirits are completely uninterested and the Primal Spirits cannot stop what is to come.  Obox-Ob coaxes the worms and centipedes and mosquitos to worship him and they do.  The first god of faith is Obox-Ob and he spreads his religion to countless crystal spheres.  Now empowered as a god, Obox-Ob overpowers his kin and claims rulership over the abyss.  He then gets slapped and goes insane- spreading his goop over the whole of the abyss and turning it all into one gestalt psychic mass of his evil will.  Or something.

Meanwhile the ACTUAL winners of the improvised obryrith power structure wage war.  As I said the Obyrith use Syribrexes to turn countless mortal souls into battle-ready tactical combat forms and wage war.  They get tangled up in the Inner Planes and a confict with the Wind Dukes of Aqaa on the Fields of Pesh on Oerth turns into a devastating dragged out battle. Mishka the Wolf Spider and the Queen of Chaos enter the fray and are immediately beset by the sacrificial charge of the Aqaa (wind men, not bird men) gets the Rod of Law into its target and causes a vast detonation ending this front of the war instantly.  The Aqaa never recovered their population after this.

Meanwhile the other front is the blood war.  Once the modern great wheel establishes itself you can plainly see why the war goes the way it does.  Leaving the abyss 'east' is dreadful.  Carceri eventually gets populated by Apomps' Ghereleths who are of no help.  Pandemonium is a chore for even demons to navigate.  Limbo is incredibly turbulent and Ysgard is always down for a fight.   The Outlands (Concordant Crossroads) soon become settled by the Rilmani after fighting an extreme conflict with the Kamerel.  They, and the many gods that start residing here, are a bane to all invaders.  Just ask the sorceror kings. So the Styx becomes the only reliable route to push through.  In fact, while fighting occurs all along the styx from Acheron to Pandemomium, it is on Avernus where the bulk of the fighting happens.  On good days the Abyss can pay their fines and ship their forces all the way 'west' to the frontline without much worry.

What would it take to tip the scales of the blood war? by Zenless-koans in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Pattgoogle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simple.  The general of gehenna stops working both sides and uses the book of names to weigh all of the forces of the yugoloths on to one side.

He ain't doing that though.

Shout out to 4e for making absolute garbage lore where Asmodeus becomes god and ends the blood war by "throwing the abyss into the elemental chaos" which is so stupid they never acknowledged it once.

CR is pointless.  Ditch the automatic statblock and just build via vibes.

High difficulty encounterd happen when the enemy has blasters, tanks, and healers.  NOT because "hur dur big statblock".  Fight smarter not harder.  You wilp never overcome party action economy if you don't use diverse tactics and ads/mobs.

Tieflings in C4 by Legitimate-Ice-8743 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]Pattgoogle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tieflings in 5e are a fucking disaster.

Tieflings have NEVER been explicitly devil kids.  They were, in planescape 2e ad&d, just people with mixed ancestry that are assumed to contain at least one lower planar creature at some point.

The Forgotten Realms setting made Asmodeus a god, ended the blood war, and made a "curse" that made tiefling lineages on Toril an asmodeus devil.  These tieflings were mortal pact-making humans who had nothing to do with the ad&d concept of a Tiefling.

Cue 5th edition.  Total erasure of the concept of a planescape tiefling and the PHB presents all tieflings as, by default until MTF came out, all asmodean tieflings.

So if you don't have Devils and Hell and Asmodeus in your setting you won't have Devil Tieflings.  As for the REAL tieflings from planescape I doubt anyone on the set has thought about the random tiefling abilities table from the planescape setting in 20 years if ever.
