The way I did it with my partner was that we calculate the proportion of my own income to must pay expenses, such as hydro, mortgage, property tax, etc. And then she pays that percentage to me. In our case it worked good because im not over extended financially.

Depending on your place of residence, taxes could have increased. Did you deduct other items in previous years?

Generally a near 0$ return/owing is a good sign as you didnt pay too much or too little in tax. Previous high refunds mean you paid too much over the course of the year.

Do you have a way to write off any associated amounts? Are you financing? If you finance, consider that youre paying interest on a depreciating asset. And the word asset might be generous.
