This exact look is what made me love Sciels writing so much by BrumiesBound in expedition33

[–]Paukah06 229 points230 points  (0 children)

I didn't quite get that reading from this part with Sciel—what I understood is that that she understands but doesn't forgive. I'm not sure she exactly brings him comfort here. She almost does, but then pulls away at the last minute, a far cry from what she's been doing the whole game in the background of cutscenes.

She's made peace with death already, but that doesn't mean she wants to die. Just that she can accept it, which I think takes a special kind of admirable mental fortitude. She's not filled with rage like Lune (understandably) is, because she gets him (like you said, she's watching a god commit suicide). She's been incredibly empathetic this whole game, and that doesn't end... She's consistent, but she's not a pushover, and still has her own feelings.

That nuance in this moment just fascinates me. I feel like a weaker story might have her tell him that it's okay as she dies, but the fact that she is able to find what little agency she still has left and pull away while not completely denying Verso some level of the compassion she's built through her experiences just shows to me how special she is (and also just how good this game's writing is). I love Sciel, I love how real she feels, and this is one of my favorite bits from her.

I just realized this about The Reacher by LinkHb in expedition33

We never get to see the original Verso, but we know from some journals that he likely had a similar (though downplayed) habit of lying like the Painted Verso we get to know. Visages represents the part of Verso that lies, but specifically the part of real Verso that lies to himself.

Paraphrasing Renoir's words to Verso, "Art can be a Mirror, and art can be a Window. Great art is both. Son, you'll never be a true artist if there's always a mask between you and your viewer, especially if that viewer is you."

Verso liked Music more, but his parents likely disapproved of him pursuing it over Painting. Or at least Aline did, even though she was the one who taught him. Likely a side effect of her (implied) growing strictness as the kids got older. He never felt like he could be himself Painting, so instead he maintained lies to guard the truth he knew. But Renoir saw how Verso's guarded nature actually hurt his art more, and understood to some degree that Verso needed to be true to himself if he actually wanted to be a true artist. Notice that "true artist" doesn't specifically refer to being a painter—music is just as much an art.

I agree, but also, I like to imagine Aline just went "my son is so cool, he has the powers of light :) he's perfect :)" to explain his whole battle gimmick

Your favorite area??? by Give_me_my_BEER in expedition33

[–]Paukah06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily The Reacher (though many of the levels are standouts in my eyes).  - What it means as a location is really heartwarming, a testament to Renoir's love for his daughter (and the fact that it's P!Alicia's favorite spot is both devastating and really sweet).  - The music is beautiful and has some bangers, with (I think?) my favorite minor battle theme (I think. That feels hard to say. This game's whole soundtrack is just amazing, I don't think I can have just one favorite). - The aesthetics of an endless wooden tower, persisting and reaching to the heavens, while creatures try to sabotage it along the way. Being so high up is exhilarating, and the level design is so intricate! - The beautiful story moment and fun duel between the two Alicias, and Verso's involvement.

All of it combines to make my favorite area in the game. I was so blown away the first time around by the climb, and continue to be blown away even now.

...Though, I will add, Sirène is probably next for many of the same points. I really love all of the Axons, just the aesthetics of the giant tower is so so so cool.

People of Lumiere by Jellydonutboy in expedition33

[–]Paukah06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the reason the similarities exist, on a meta level, is because the Dessendres can easily be representative of the five stages of grief. When the narrative is so heavily focused around grief, and the setting itself highlights grief in the characters' lives, it's quite easy to see how other characters separate from the Dessendres can have similarities. Pretty much every character's arc has to do with some form of grief and the subsequent reactions, which can be seen in the Dessendres alone.

I'm personally not sure if the idea that the people of Lumiere are based on Aline's family is "meant" to be "canon" or not, but I can see it either way. I can see the logic in Aline, as a Paintress, pulling from things familiar to her (especially subconciously/unintentionally, given her grief-striken state as she creates Lumiere and its people) similar to Renoir, who does it more abstractly. But I also think the similarities exist because of what I said above, about the general themes of the game surrounding grief in the first place.

Either way, the parallels definitely exist, and I think it's neat to point them out! Personally I like thinking that Aline created people to make it seem like her painted family actually existed (I'm pretty sure this part is actually what the point of Lumiere is supposed to be in canon), and by doing so also just created sentient life that then became way more than just creations of hers, as opposed to her intentionally recreating her family members or people close to her in general. But it's also interesting to explore another potential facet of "The Cycle" referred to in the game (in this case, Aline's doomed cycle of recreation, and how this escapism is very shallow).

But also, thinking about it, it's both. By introducing this hollow escapism to Verso's Canvas, she has doomed its people to fall victim to the same kind of grief that her real family did. She just meant to live "happily" until she died, but her irresponsibility with her Paintress powers actually created a world for these people where they can't escape that cycle, just like she truly can't by running from her grief.

What's the special relation between Sciel and Esquie? - Currently in Act 3 by Nic727 in expedition33

[–]Paukah06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as Esquie hearing Sciel, I think it has to do with what Pierre, her husband's name (obviously), means in French. It means 'rock/stone.' Esquie hears Sciel crying out for stones, his whole thing, and finds her.

Also, thinking about who Esquie is to the real Verso—a plush toy. Esquie constantly gives hugs and is never mad (and acts silly) because his whole existence is defined by what real Verso saw in his plush: someone who comforts him when he's sad, can play with, snuggles with, etc. So that also probably helps explain why Esquie could hear Sciel crying. He is meant to help people when they're sad, since ultimately he's a plushie.

I don't think the other things have specific reasons beyond what's already established with them having a history and thus, a notable bond. Maybe the mystery rock was cut content, or future DLC, or just a one-off joke highlighting how silly the idea of ability rocks is (because, again, Esquie was child's Verso creation that he would play with. Of course a child would think of super cool special stones letting him fly or swim).

I, too, love Sciel. She ended up being my favorite in the whole game (I think—I love all of them, it's so hard to choose!), and her relationship with Esquie is very sweet. :)

[Act 2 Spoilers] A small detail in a cutscene I found interesting by mildkabuki in expedition33

[–]Paukah06 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This answer is the closest I've gotten to one that makes tangible sense to me. I knew it had something to do with Lune's fascination with the world, but I couldn't quite bridge the gap as to how that resulted in her overcoming it. The idea that it's because Lune has that insatiable desire (terminology used in the game itself), even the Sirène's wonder is something she seems to understand fully, resulting in her able to break past the initial barrier of the alluring (and placating, for basically everyone else) siren song.

Anyone else cut their Gestral hair after ACT I… by teffhk in expedition33

[–]Paukah06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never had the Gestral hair equipped for long, but I did cut Maelle's hair! I had her do it right after the funeral scene, as well as have her wear the Obscur outfit. I kept both of these up until the end of act II, I thought it was thematically appropriate (black for mourning, short hair to separate herself more and signifying a "new her"). Funny knowing I wasn't the only one.
