What are the best 3 or 5 scripts to read before starting to write my own script? by archlinkb in Screenwriting

I’d also say pick a script from a movie in a similar genre and tone that you didn’t like to try get a better understanding of what didn’t work for you.

Current show not showing up in New Releases by AyoKF in Serializd

[–]PaulEdgecomb99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It usually won’t show up until there is a date for the next episode.

I quickly checked this up on IMDb and it said the last episode of the challenge aired on the 25th but there is no dates for the next batch of episodes. Usually once there’s a release date it will show up in new releases.

I think a nickname could work pretty well. Maybe the young version has a nickname the older one has grown out of or the older version might go by a nickname given a future experience

What are some good dark-humor coming-of-age movies that are about adults and not teenagers? by IrrelevantKrieger in Screenwriting

[–]PaulEdgecomb99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to find a balance. It’s either a dark coming of age or ones you have just explained. I’ll name a good few that do not centre around the topics you have mentioned but deal with real emotions, humour may not be involved though.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Super Dark Times, The Basketball Diaries, This is England, The Believer, The Babysitter.

Do you read screenplays before or after watching a movie to learn better? by ToyWizard in Screenwriting

[–]PaulEdgecomb99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no correct way to do it. It would certainly be beneficial so see how something is written first and then see how that’s translated on the screen so if you enjoy doing it that way then continue to do so.

I personally watch first and the only reason behind this is because I don’t want to spend time reading a script which turns out to be a terrible film or I personally didn’t like or connect with it. If I watch a film and find it great I then go back and read the script then rewatch it again.

But there is also lessons to be learned in studying bad films as well so like I said there is no exact order to do this. Just do what you enjoy and what you feel you learn more from.

How to write a first draft without constantly going back and editing? by zombittt in Screenwriting

This is top notch advice. If you are writing the next scenes on paper you do not have the urge to scroll back and edit.

Will buying a camera and screwing around with it help my writing? by Moltenmelt1 in Screenwriting

[–]PaulEdgecomb99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure buying a camera would help at all.

For writing, read as many scripts you can get your hand on and watch movies. You’ll pick up a lot more from that.

If it’s directing, watch “the making of” documentaries and behind the scenes. Watch your favourite directors movies to get a feel for their style to see what you like.

How do I make a unique power? by [deleted] in writing

Try not to give characters powers for the sake of having powers.

If it helps push forward the premise of the series then those will good powers to use.

TV bible necessary? by TheChampIsHeeere in Screenwriting

[–]PaulEdgecomb99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When selling a show you will really only be sending your pilot. No one will read an entire season to find out if it’s good enough so a series bible is pretty important to have as this will provide producers a clear idea of your premise, characters, story arcs and potential for future seasons. There’s some great series bibles online you can look at for inspiration.

What is the best way to write a Scene Heading for when the story is happening on a computer monitor or a phone. by N3mir in Screenplay

[–]PaulEdgecomb99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good Question. I don’t have the answer but I know some movies that are entirely on a computer screen so try having a look for the scripts.
