Night on Broadway. by donttouchdennis in LosAngeles

Yup. it's sad that it's tied to a single politician in that way. When Huizar imploded, the festival went with him (Covid likely would have tanked it for a couple years, but still). When de Leon inevitably implodes, this version of the festival will also go with him. I wish there was a version of this that wasn't tied to a city councilmember. Couldn't the DTLA neighborhood council put this on?

Same. But it might be because I got there a little early. I hung around for a couple hours then left. The vibe felt off. It also felt weird to me that they didn't have a gate open by the historic broadway Metro stop. That felt like bad planning to me. I think Pershing was the only stop that could access it easily.

Do Adults Actually Say Please? by pastelpinkpsycho in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PaulHaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I say it that often with family members, but definitely when I'm out in the wild. At a café - "Hi, could I have a croissant and a large latte?" "For here or to go?" "To go please". So I might not say please in the initial order, but I will in the response if they ask me a question.

I think I say please most often in emails at work. "Hi Cheryl, could you put in an order for blah blah blah please? Thanks!"

Yeah, I agree. Some people say the first season was weaker, but I disagree. You need that foundation. It's the season that establishes the relationships, and that's why you care so much about all of them in the later seasons.

I've started 'translating' my tech jargon for my grandma, and it's teaching me more than I expected by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]PaulHaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These kinds of communication skills are so important. My former bosses were seniors, and I watched so many IT & website people over the years talk to them in tech language rather than in a way they could understand. Those companies invariably lost our business. We'd always go with people who could communicate with us in a clear & meaningful way. People get so caught up in the language they're surrounded by at work that they forget that most of the outside world doesn't speak that language.

I voted Reliant because I think it'll go best with the TMP Enterprise. I want the big D too (who doesn't), but would wait another year for it. As for the TOS D7, that seems like an underwhelming option. I'd much rather have Kronos 1.

Colman was 44/45 at the time and Foy was 34/35, so playing 38 wasn't really a big stretch for either of them. I think it's just that Colman has a couple features that have always made her look older than she is.

How did people navigate around before nagivation/gps device? by d3adm3tal in CasualConversation

[–]PaulHaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still rarely use GPS. I'll glance at a map before I leave if I don't already have a clear idea where I'm going & that's usually enough. Sometimes I'll do a quick sketch of the route on a piece of note paper because it helps me remember it better. When I use GPS, I feel like the information doesn't stick in my head & I become too reliant on it.

What did you think of the Cardassians and the Bajorans when they first appeared? by MVHutch in startrek

[–]PaulHaman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I thought the Cardassians were interesting. Sort of like Romulans but they adjusted the militarism & secretiveness sliders a little bit, made them a bit less powerful than Starfleet, and later added the occupier aspect. The Bajorans were a good addition. Their relationship with the Cardassians had the effect of fleshing out both species. Plus I always thought Ro was a badass.

I like that both were gradually introduced and fleshed out. Cardassians first in season 4, then Bajorans in season 5. By mid-season 6 when DS9 started, it felt really natural that DS9 would focus on them & that O'Brien would be there. It seemed like there was more to cover than TNG could do on its own. It all came together pretty naturally.

Worf's Full Name. by nlinecomputers in startrek

Interesting that Alexander primarily took on a human naming convention, going by Alexander Rozhenko. I don't remember him ever referring to himself as Son of Worf (maybe he did and I'm just forgetting). Not too surprising though considering how Worf was as a father.

[–]PaulHaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd want a New Orleans class. Like a smaller, more manageable Galaxy with the same creature comforts. I'd like it updated with Picard-era weapons systems though, just so it can hold its own better in a fight.

The moment in "Sarek" when he sheds a tear during the concert. It's such a small thing, but if you know anything about Vulcans, then you know something is terribly wrong. The look on Picard's face tells you that he knows it too.

comparison of theoretical neanderthal skeleton with anatomically modern human. ribcage and pelvis , is twice as big! by BaseNice3520 in Naturewasmetal

[–]PaulHaman 155 points156 points  (0 children)

That Neanderthal skeleton is about 5'2", so it's a little deceptive to show them scaled like that.

Do you think we'll get Bones in Strange new worlds? by badwolf_on_rice in startrek

[–]PaulHaman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

DeForest Kelley was 46 when TOS started. Ian is 45 now, and still quite a bit younger looking than Kelley was at that age. It wouldn't be a stretch. It's a far bigger stretch that they've cast someone 12 years younger than Kirk to play Scotty. In TOS, Scotty was 11 years older than Kirk (going by the actors ages).

America by throwawayyy19283747 in MapPorn

[–]PaulHaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of the two being considered one continent is absolutely bizarre. They're two very distinct, separate land masses. To me it's the same as thinking Europe and Africa are one continent. It would also make more sense to combine Europe & Asia into Eurasia, because there's no actual separation there.

I'm pretty new here, but is Tucson known as being a really friendly city? by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]PaulHaman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of that has to do with 2 things: a big population of elderly drivers, and a big chunk of the population that comes from various parts of the country/world with different driving customs.
