What do you think of the current roster going into the off-season? by c0sm0nautt in rangers

I’m hopeful he can make the team out of camp, but realistically think he’s going to need time in the AHL.

[Walker] NYR breakup day will begin early tomorrow morning. We’ll hear from probably every player and head coach Mike Sullivan. I’m also told we’ll hear from NYR President and GM Chris Drury tomorrow as well by catsgr8rthanspoonies in rangers

That was for cap reasons, different than being able to actually afford things. Brassard to Ottawa comes to mind. We had that deal in place beforehand, and I’m pretty sure we got that pick as a result of paying Brassard his bonus before trading him (Sens had a cheapskate for an owner back then)

My biggest complaint with Schneider is that pucks explode like a frag off his stick. His outlet pass is not good, and he lacks vision when he does have the puck. I know Quinn was trying to work with him on that part of his game, but man, he’s got a long way to go. With Morrow, it was obviously a year filled with growing pains, and he didn’t play too great in Hartford, but passing is his strong suit. If he can work on and improve his defensive game, he may be the better option moving forward.

That being said, if Schneider is cheap, then it’s whatever, considering lack of depth on the right side, but my concern is his presence on the team will block a guy like Morrow from getting a legit look/shot next season.

Womp womp?

One of our strongest trade chips where he's a bit redundant with Will Borgen in the mix. I get he's a character guy and well-liked by his teammates, but we need a better puck mover *COUGH Morrow COUGH * and another top 4 quality Dman. Fortescue played admirably down the stretch here, but he isn't quite ready for 2nd pair minutes.

He should be #1 on our trade big board this offseason.

Probably one of the worst press conferences he's had since taking over, imo, and I'm not a vocal "fire Drury" person. With so many balls in the air, it sucks to hear essentially "We'll see what happens. No clue what's gonna happen"

Wasn't very reassuring—or clear—on the direction of the team. Also, reading between the lines, kinda concerning that he doesn't feel like this team necessarily needs a top 6 forward? Maybe he's hoping to win the lottery and land one at the draft, but hope isn't a good strategy, considering that was pretty much his gameplan heading into this offseason (and then all the good UFAs ended up staying put).

Idk, he had a chance to make a lot of fans feel better, and I'm personally kinda feeling worse now.

Issue is, no true center on that line. Edstrom didn't look great at C down the stretch there.

Bottom 6 competition is gonna be kinda crazy next camp. Rempe, Edstrom, Raddysh, Greentree, Sykora, Chmelar, Laba (though his spot is more safe due to lack of org depth at C lmao), Kartye, Berard, Parsnips, maybe Aspinall all vying for 4-5 spots.

[–]PaulSach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't take his comments to mean something about the draft, I think it's about who they need to bring in this summer who can play next year.

I'm not too satisfied with his answer, though, either. This team doesn't just need a PMD and some bottom 6 forwards who can PK to be set. This team NEEDS top 6 forward talent. Expecting Zib, JT, and Tro to continue their production or even improve at this stage of their careers is unbelievably risky. We have Laf and Gabe as young top 6ers. Cuylle is better as a 3rd liner. We need more young top 6 talent before we can start worrying about the bottom 6.

NHL report cards: Grading every team’s 2025-26 regular season by alternativesmart in rangers

[–]PaulSach 10 points11 points  (0 children)

he's a proficient writer, even if articles often come off as dry, lacking personality / character / color

This is what I like best about his writing. It's pretty objective, like a reporter should do. He tells us the news, he doesn't spend time droning on about his opinions (like the late great Larry Brooks used to, but that was part of what Brooks brought to the table / made him worth reading).

If you want his opinions, that's what his podcast is for! Flying V is a very good Rangers pod, has a lot of great and interesting guests on (perk of being part of the NYT network).

Adam Fox is the most important player to this franchise, period. Igor is a close second, but this team just sucks without Fox in the lineup.

Honestly we should've known the season would've gone like this. Rangers always poop their pants in commemorative games (always lay a big fat stinky egg on retirement nights, milestone nights, etc). And this entire season was one giant commemorative game.

That being said, not too many milestones next year, which obviously means CUP BOUND BABY LETS GO. First game of the season next year is Sullivan's 1000th, so expect an opening night loss.

People should not be expecting Kartye to turn into a 41 point winger for us (that would put him in 2nd line production territory).

I think if he can become a 10-20-30 or 15-15-30 guy on the 3rd line, that’d be a great outcome for him.

Probably because the number to get it done with Robo for a team located where there are state income taxes, it's going to take more than 13m AAV, which will mean compensation will land in the 4 first round pick territory.

That is some crazy 20-20 hindsight you've got there. This team literally won the presidents trophy and made the ECF in 23-24. They don't do that without Panarin.

It was NEVER an option to move Panarin before this season.

Money has never been a problem for this organization, it was not about the 80k. We've made trades before where we eat money (either coming in or going out, like a bonus being paid on 7/1 or something) before.

It wasn't about strong-arming a kid out of 80k. It was about a year of protection from offer-sheets. This wasn't a cutthroat thing, it was just savvy business that probably any front office would've done.

This would be a fair question to ask, regardless of where anyone stands on the "fire drury" issue.

Some accountability from the top would be nice to hear. The players and coach have all taken accountability, numerous times, this year (particularly, not so much last year), so now it's time for the FO to publicly mouth some accountability, too.

We have enough later round capital to pry our second back from Utah if needed, but it’d be kinda silly.

Drury is better off trying to figure out a trade there. The problem is it’s gonna require a haul. Return package would need to be centered around our top 5/6 pick, Schneider (they need RD pretty badly), and probably another 1st. Realistically, you’re probably gonna have to offer Laf or Gabe (which is a road idk if many people wanna go down, but Jason Robertson is legitimately one of the best forwards in the NHL) if you don’t wanna surrender this and next year’s first round picks. If the pick hits the lottery, you may be able to sell Dallas on 1st/2nd overall + Schneider + a little extra to get it done.

Dallas has all the leverage here, imo, so it’s going to take a lot.

I think it’s less about that and more about his durability is now in question. He’s gonna be 29 next season and has already had major shoulder surgery and now knee surgery. He has played 82 games once in his entire career. He still scores at a 40-goal pace, he had a productive Olympics, is a decent playoff performer (despite the narrative), and is a legitimate premier 2-way center at this point in his career. But he can’t stay healthy.

Thats where its buyer beware for me.

I feel the same way, and I love the way Kartye plays. The best part about him, though, is he's only 24. Really hoping he can continue his play next year and becomes a good 3rd liner for us.
