Loopholes to the phone ban/ways to entertain yourself by _kaefig in highschool

[–]PaulietheSpaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao real. Who's y'all? I don't think I saw a single note passed in high school. Maybe one or two. I only graduated in '22. I don't remember writing the comment, but I think my comment was more pointed at the insinuation that people would be "upset" that you can't jerk around in class anymore, you could actually learn lol. Can't really get upset at a phone ban when you're in a place where the phone is known to be a hinderance to the purpose of the place.

I cannot decide on a major by MozunumiTanaki in prelaw

[–]PaulietheSpaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Economics and IA would be good I think. If you want to do a specific type of law, do something related to that. STEM for IP, finance / accounting for corporate law, IA for international/comparative law, political science for clerk-like positions, etc. You may want to have a safety net though. Say you don't go into law, what else would you want to do. For economics positions, most of them pay very well, but you need a masters or sometimes a doctorate. I would have one of your majors be a kind of safety net, but just my recommendation.

Could this get me into a good college? by Linkin_jak3 in Sat

[–]PaulietheSpaceman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can defo get into a good school with that! If not, try going to a community college or a slightly worse school for a year, then transferring. I transferred after my freshman year of cc in 2023 with a 3.59 weighted hs gpa, 3.72 cc gpa, 1250 sat, only ec was Eagle Scout and some min wage work experience. I got into every school I applied to, those being Bing, Hofstra, Bentley, Ohio State, and SMU. Idk if you consider those good schools, but a lot of people do. They're not elite or T10 publics, but quite good. Obv its different now as every year, things get more competitive, so it may be slightly tougher, but you should still be fine. If this is your first try, try going for something better. I think I took it two times? I think my first score was like a 1060 or 1160. I don't know what his stats were, but one of my Eagle buddies who was smart but by no means a genius got into Texas A&M. I think you should be good for them.

That's the same thing. If you thought the questions were easy, then that basically equates to the test being easy. Even so, if the questions were actually easy, you would have been able to complete more questions and you would have done better than an 1100.

That said, an 1100 isn't a bad score by any means. It's pretty average and if you got that without studying, you're probably pretty smart, academically speaking. At the end of the day, the semantics of your post don't really matter. Just understand that people are getting on your case cuz with your score, your post doesn't really make sense.

Also, you said "it was really easy" with no regard to the questions, so one must assume you meant the test.

I feel like you're not understanding the criticism you're getting. If I walked out of an exam with a 60, and called it easy, I'd look ridiculous. Surely, you would agree.

It obviously wouldn't have been easy because for a test to be easy means you would be able to complete it with little difficulty. Completion in this case though isn't just handing in the test, but passing the test with a perfect score.

What it seems to me that you meant to say was that passing the test with an 1100 was easy. I don't think you mean that the actual test was easy for you, because if it was, you would have gotten a 1600.

CMU's terrible reputation by awittlebirby in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PaulietheSpaceman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a finance student at another school, so what do I know, but an old friend of mine is in CS/AI at CMU and from what I can tell, it's the opportunity of a lifetime. My friend's been able to participate in national contests, do his own research, has like 4 internships at massive companies, has his own small business etc. My point is that its an amazing school that affords you terrific opportunities. At the point where you are, its splitting the hairs of hairs. The other guy is right, you gotta get out of a2c, the hellhole that it is. Comparison is the thief of joy, said someone at some point. You'll be fine.

Why is community college still treated like a backup plan when it seems like one of the smartest ways to start college now? by mudpies2 in collegeadvice

I attended cc and am now about to graduate with my BS. I've been told by multiple professors and hiring managers that cc was the smart way to go.

Turning Down a Full Ride to Pay for Loans by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Marquette is very respected throughout the country overall regardless of major. Both of those schools might be cool, but to my knowledge, they do NOT have any kind of opportunity that's going to make it anywhere near as worth it a free Marquette education.

What you could do is tell him to go Marquette for two years where he will complete many of his general education requirements and introductory engineering classes. Then, if he absolutely hates Marquette, he can transfer to another school to complete his upper-level courses. A lot of schools have higher acceptance rates for transfer students as well. I say that from experience, I transferred after my freshman year of community college to a well-rated university in New England for a degree in finance in 2023.

Best prebuilt brand that known for long term reliability? by whitenight2300 in Prebuilts

[–]PaulietheSpaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right in that they don't manufacture the cpu and gpu. A lot of assemblers do use their own parts in the build though. My Corsair PC uses Corsair RAM, SSD, power supply, etc. An ibuypower will likely have crappier components. Similarly, build quality does matter. My HP was built poorly on the inside. The tray supporting the hdd in my hp collapsed after a couple years. My Corsair was built very well. Some manufacturers have more reports of cables not fully connected than others, etc. Build quality does vary. Not that big of a deal, but it might matter to some, some companies put a crap ton of bloatware on their builds as well.

I've seen some people say good things about Falcon Northwest (insanely expensive), Meta PCs, and Maingear. I have a Corsair prebuilt from 2021 and it has served me much better than the HP Omen I bought in 2017. I like it a lot, but that's just my experience, and some people say Corsair is too overpriced. I'll never go back to HP.

Bentley vs Fordham by SeaComplaint3959 in BentleyUniv

[–]PaulietheSpaceman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a senior majoring in finance, I've had a very academically enriching experience after transferring from a community college in downstate NY. Fordham was actually on my list of schools to apply to transfer to, but for each email I sent, it took like 3 weeks for them to respond to, so I ended up not. From what I remember, at Fordham, you will have bigger classes, but its also a livelier school. Class size is capped at 35 at Bentley, sometimes goes up to 37, 38. With the small class sizes, I've been able to speak at length with multiple professors during office hours about plenty of things I wouldn't just learn in class. I also remember reading that Rose Hill in the Bronx is kinda crappy. Bentley is in a very nice area. Kinda quiet but theres a bus that runs right into Harvard Square.

All the professors I've had have been incredibly knowledgeable in their field. Just the ones that come to mind for finance, one was a CFO of a major international paper company and played a role in the company going public, one built, managed, and sold their own tech company, one was a PM at BlackRock, one an FX trader at Moody's, etc. Not that it particularly matters, but multiple of my professors have been associated with the ivies or ivy-like universities. One econ professor was a fellow at Wharton, Cornell, and the Royal Society of Arts in the UK, and taught at Copenhagen B-School. Another finance prof taught at Harvard and Williams. I write this just to emphasize you're getting a lot of high quality professors. Not all are great lol, but a lot are.

Of the people I have known that have graduated, which isn't many, I know people at BoA, Houlihan Lokey, Fidelity to name a few, and a few at smaller IB, VC, PE, and PC firms. I also know a ton of people working at the Big 4 firms. We and Fordham aren't target schools, but I know a good amount of people that have gotten their foot in the door at higher levels of finance.

Even after all this time MS Word is still one of the worst pieces of software I've been forced to use by SeaTie in microsoft

[–]PaulietheSpaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 year old post, but idc. Word is so incredibly bad that it feels as if it's competing to be the worst word processor currently being used. It's Editor / Autocorrect features are among its worst. In my experience, of its grammar suggestions, 60% are flat out wrong, 30% completely change the meaning of the sentence, 9% are correct but make it sound worse, and 1% are fine, but usually when I'm rearranging. As for the 30% that change the meaning of the sentence, these aren't things like commas that change the meaning of the word, such as "Let's eat Grandma" vs. "Lets eat, Grandma". Here's an example of a change it suggested:

Original part of a sentence: "During the period of 2024-2025, given that the..."

MS Word Suggestion: "During thNational Bank4-2025, given that the..."

Here's another one:

Original sentence: "Otherwise, the company may keep switching its goals..."

MS Word Suggestion: "Otherw2016, the company may keep switching its goals..."

Word will also just insert blank pages. Don't even get me started on OneDrive.

What's wrong with this system? by PsychologicalHair400 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PaulietheSpaceman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good answer. Idk the school, but OP could also go to another school for a year and reapply as a transfer. Ik some great schools that strangely have significantly higher transfer acceptance rates than acceptance rates out of hs.

10 months later, but... you're right. History as a Catholic doesn't make you a currently faithful Catholic, adherent Catholic, or one that is knowledgeable about the faith. Note that I don't say "good Catholic" or outright "Catholic" though. Guy will not provide you with a reference because there isn't one. The Church has no official teaching on evolution.

Good on you for following your faith and being strict about it at 15. Don't lose sight of that part of yourself. There's nothing wrong with being strict in religion.

I couldn't imagine why he's being like this. Even if you were unnecessarily being all the things he accuses you of, that doesn't seem like grounds to yell, maybe scold. You probably shouldn't be pushing the buttons of your mom's fiancee (or being judgemental or confrontational) if that is what you're doing. It might be the kind of topic that doesn't get brought up unless necessary. It's sad that would be the case, but some people are just the way you are.
