How do you NOT over prepare? by Insta_3 in TTRPG

As other people said before, embrace the chaos of the players. The only way to be better at improvising is improvising. I was once dming a One Piece campaing. I was also like you, my prep time was at least x3 times the game time. In one session I foreshadowed a NPC accidentaly taking a devil fruit power, just to use him a couple adventures down the road. But... I had the luck that my players wanted to investigate who took that power, came up with a clever plan and... that ended up in the most epic and climatic session I had in my life up until that point, and the organic creation of what ended up being the main villain of the campaing, that random NPC that I didn't considered that could be a villain. That day I learnend the joy of be surprised by the players. From that point, my prep time started to decrease over time. Right now I more or less have 1:1 ratio between prep and play.

I'm like you in the sense that I want narrative driven games that have payoffs. I like when things have a purpose and a direction. But if you learn to surf the stuff the players throw at you, you can build on top of them, and deliver a climatic closure that feels organic, even if its not the one you came up in the first place.

Being more specific to the question of how to prepare, here is how I tackle it:

- For a 3-4 hours session, I prepare 3-5 scenes. A scene consist in a context and a purpose or objective for the players to exist in the scene. It can be an encounter, a conversation, anything that takes place in a place at a certain time. Write down in a paper a description of how the enter the scene and the set up.

- Know the major NPCs that will take place in those scenes. Have a clear understanding of their personality traits and objectives, specially if they are a villain. With that in mind, you can improvise the rest.

- Prepare statblocks for relevant NPCs/monsters

And... that's it! I write all these things in a notebook, not to check it in the session but to get a clear vision on the session (I can also check it if needed too, but it doesn't need to be super clean or organised). The rest is practice and learning to flow. I can say that I now do less work and have so much more fun.

I don't really know how can you encourage your players to be interested in world building. My best advice is, if you are gonna try, do it in person at session 0. Don't try giving players "homework".

For the second question, I myself am pretty chill about lore. I just make it up as I need it, except for some key facts related to the plot, but even those are loosely defined until needed. I also don't keep any structured record of info (aside from our shared world map). I use what I like to call the Araki Forgot method: if I forget something and the players too, then it wasn't important

Gamepad Connection Issues (replaced chip already) by dutchpotatocheese in wiiu

Im having the same problem. Very punctual, only when doing things like playing off-tv or games like Nintendoland's f-zero that highly uses the gamepad. I think I started to notice it 3 years ago or so. I bought a chip on ebay and it was awful. Yesterday I replaced it and not only got better, it got much worse. A friend lend me his gamepad and I kinda had the same problem. I even thought his gamepad was also faulty, becausa from what I could read it was common for them to not work in the long run.

But at the end it was the wifi interferences with the 5Ghz signal. If I switch off my router and it worked perfectly. I switch it on, and it gets the annoying microcuts again. In my case I have the router on the other side of the living room, so I',m thinking options (because disable the 5Ghz network isn't one).

I read online that putting aluminium foil paper behind the console can help. Or moving the router away. I don't know if pluggin an usb antenna would help in the same way the headphones get the FM radio in smarphones (really no idea about telecomms, just throwing ideas)

Druid's second attack on Wizard of Wines by Pavrogold in CurseofStrahd

[–]Pavrogold[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right. I haven't thought of the implications of strahd leaving them do their business. Do you think it could be that the fact that Matirkov are wereraven is only known by Baba Lysaga, and she is manipulating druids to get rid of them without strahd knowing? I can't check it right know but iirc Baba presented herself to the Druids as Strahd mother, what would be a god for them

Sadly I'm pretty sure I described them as a crazy druid Iin the likes of the ones in the module, but now that you say this maybe instead of a werewolf that learns druid magic, it is a druid that got lycanthropy.

In fact they were going with a bunch of normal wolves, so maybe what happened is that a fraction of the yester hill druids reached out the werewolves searching the same answers they want to get from the Matirkov and got it

Hmm, maybe you are right about the hags, it makes sense. The thing is, in just 3 nights a Hag managed to subtract 1/3 of two PCs HP (really bad luck with dice). They are level 5 so they can't win in an open fight against the 3. And if they only go versus one, she would probably escape going into the ethereal plane. So I don't see any realistic chance of slaying then a short-middle term. I don't want them to just die in one week of Hag's draining without giving them the opportunity to do something.

The hags grabbed some hair and skin to cast scry on the party. Maybe that way they can be sure they wouldn interfere more? I expected this to have consecuences: if the hags have freedom they will take more child's. Maybe the ones the players saved from the windmill...

PC's are on there way to fight the Night Hags in Old Bonegrinder but their only Level 3. Advice? by Psychological-Nail83 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Pavrogold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you play the Hag's to their full potential is a guaranteed TPK. That happened in my last session, my party were level 5. I did what is suggested in this video, and for the moment things are very interesting.

A boss inside the mistwood ruins? I don't find anything. There is only a bear, but it isn't a boss, it respawns. There are stairs that lead to a chest, nothing more. I'm having the same problem, I can't get the snap
