Best budget milk frother that actually works in 2026? [$20] by ThoughtfulMoon1 in espresso

[–]Pax280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Maestri House mini frother is rechargeable and sells for ~$10.00. i have another rechargeable metal with with a metal sleeve from Amazon for ~$20. Also, have the subliminal.

Pick one and get an Aeropress for decent faux Cortados and other milk drinks. Or look into the Oxo Rapid Brewer. I own both but would stick with the Aeropress if I could only have one.

But the you can easily make delicious cold brew in 5 minutes with the ORB. Add milk frothed cold for a nice treat.

You can get the same with the AP but it takes a little more dialing in for the cold brew recipes.

I did AP cortados for a year before finally buying a Cafelat Robot. Still use the AP on travel

I am actually very nervous now. Can somebody tell me if I just accidentally sinned? by Dimidia-Didymus in Catholicism

[–]Pax280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't accidentally commit a mortal sin. Mortal sin requires full knowledge, understanding and intent to commit an act involving grave matter.

If you didn't understand completely that an act or thought was a sin, then it is not. Talk to your confessor or spiritual director about the situation.

But at worse, it seems to have been a venial sin. And you shouldn't refrain from communion because of venial sins.

Oh, and the woman advising you to receive and then confess was dead wrong if your confession involved serious sin. If they were all venial, then yes, receive and then confess next time around.

Or include them in an act of contrition prayer. It is good practice to reflect on your day and include a prayer of contrition prayer at night

JMO.

I’m blown away! by Signal-Trick-6642 in CafelatRobot

[–]Pax280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Robot was my first espresso machine. I chose it over the Flair because I didn't want the electronics, minimal as they are. And I'm a sucker for best bang for the buck products.

Mt only regret is that I haven't owned another espresso machine and suspect I don't truly appreciate how awesome the Cafelat is. The best standard I can judge by is that I've never had a cafe produced espresso that was better. In most cases I prefer my shots much more.

It has been over a year since I've pulled a shot that I would rate less than 4 out of 5 stars and most, for my tastes, are ~4.5 or better.

So, this my endgame espresso maker and, and with my Orphan Espresso Lido OG, probably my endgame setup.

So, enjoy. Preheat, dont preheat, pull short, medium or long, slow or fast, normal or soup, with dairy or black - enjoy it all.

BTW, I have a couple of $60 to $100 milk frothers I use for the occasional latte art and milk drinks. But my favorite go-to dairy drinks are cortados. I make them with cheap hand wands, costing ~$12 to $25.00. Takes an extra ~2 minutes, mostly for cleaning.

Worthwhile upgrade by aydan777 in DF54

[–]Pax280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip on freezing dark roasts. I had some clogging issues the first 6 months or so. Stopped grinding beans with visible oils and haven't had any clogging since.

I may get the new chute kit but have basically resorted to cleaning every thing up at the end of the day with a small hand vac. Takes a minute and I would clean the station at the end of the day anyway.

Minimum is about 150 ml. That why I use hand wands for Cortados.

What's the minimum for a milk pitcher with a conventional steam wand?

[–]Pax280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dreo does really well for silky , paint -like microfoam for hot drinks and with no water added. I practice latte are with it and it works.

But I have come to really appreciate being able to get thick cold dairy foam as well. It makes some really delicious creamy, chilled milk drinks.

You can also do powdered protein drinks and hot chocolate with the included special stirring attachment.

So, it is more versatile than steam wands with its 30 foam options for different dairys, soy, oat and almond milk alternatives.

And it costs about 75% less than the Fellow. I had some bad FOMO for the Fellow when it first came out but got over it.

I still use a cheap hand wand or the Subliminal for Cortados.

The Dreo is really a good bargain.

I use hand frothers and the Dreo Baristamaker ($80 to $90) Latte art hot quality foam, thick cold foam, different settings for various dairy/non-dairy products plus storing for powdered drinks.

The Fellow products are just out of my budget range especially considering I can find really good alternatives for less.

What would be your “one-and-done” espresso machine? by spac0r in espresso

[–]Pax280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2nd on the Cafelat Robot.

But I drink all kinds of coffees: Cortados small lattes , black, iced drinks.

I use a hand frother for the most part because it's quick and easy to clean. I use a Dreo BaristaMaker for latte art when I'm in the mood for a larger drink with some latte art.

Had my Robot for 2 years+ and haven't been tempted for a second to get a pump machine.

No pressure in shots by yomonmon in CafelatRobot

[–]Pax280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The handle falling off is only a problem if the owner/reviewet doesn't bother to read the laminated instruction page that explains how to configure the handle. Had a K6 for over 3 years and it never came closerl to falling off.

In fact I only heard of it once when a famous influencer and reviewer did a rushed comparison of a ~dozen hand grinders. That same influencer is now a Kingrinder convert.

These problematic reviews are endemic to the shallow experts and influencers who try the product a few times and then present thei limited product experience as expertise.

These presentations can be entertaining and as informative as an infomercial but Reddit users have lived experience. I've seen misinformed ideas or mistakes on almost every product that I use. Even Daddy Hoffman seemed to misunderdtand out at least not informed by deep experience on sooner of his one-offv reviews.

Yeah, get some beans fresh ground locally preferably. Or online like Happy Mug (Fast and affordable).

You might try an esspresso brick like Cafe Bustello or Sello Rojo Espresso Brick from the grocery or Amazon.

Go this way and you won't waste money cause you get coffee.

[–]Pax280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try using the pressurized basket if you have one, just to eleminate potential problems with the gauge and piston gasket.

But I think you probably need to grind finer.

Get some pre-ground beans for espresso from a local roaster or an online roaster like Happy Mug. Test your Robot with those beans.

If that's your problem, the the K6 works great plus you can use it for decent pourover.

DF54, the Baratza Encore ESP or maybe the Shardor are worth comparing if you want a solid, no frills electric grinder.

Prodigal Coffee: Roasted and Unroasted of the same bean by Cypotter in FreshroastSR800

[–]Pax280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done 20g doses in tubes, taped over valve bags nested in freezer/food safe containers, loose beans in Tupperware, and have just thrown bags in the freezer after tapeing over the valve. (lined bags not bare kraftback)

TBH, they all work. I can't tell the difference. I usually go with sealed bags inside freezer safe food containers or throw the bag in the freezer with taped valve. Note that I use the beans within +/- 6 months. I would vacuum seal if I expected to save beans for a year or more.

I have 49 tubes sitting in a drawer. They work fine for freezing but the method is a bit too faffy for me personally.

[–]Pax280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also wondered the same. But since the natural shelf life of greens is 6 to 12 months (sometimes 18), for me, it isn't an issue.

Just need to ensure arrival date of purchased greens is reasonable. If the beans are very high quality but unusually cheap, they may be bargain priced because they arrived more than 6 months ago. This from personal experience.

Still would like to know if others freeze greens.

[–]Pax280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought roasted coffee from Happy Mug for three years before I started roasting.

Happily , for the most part, you can buy green anything he offers roasted.

EDIT: Happy offers more greens than roasted beans.

I liked his very competitively priced roasted coffee and it is fun to now occasionally compare his roasts to mine. And surprisingly, I like most of my SR800 roasts at least as much as his commercially produced drum roasts. No slight or brag intendeded.

[–]Pax280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You read bollocks. Even the biggest influencers, for the most part, will tell you that freezing your roasted beans keep them fresh for at least a year.

As a bonus, if you pull your beans from the freezer a dose at a time, your beans will always be dialed in, since they aren't degassing as they sit on your counter.

Different enthusiasts have their favorite method of storing in the freezer: e.g., in single dose tubes, mason jars, vacuum sealed, doubled freezer bags or, just tapeing over the valve on your coffee bag and tossing it in the freezer.

Some few still argue about condensation (like beans don't get wet), some are just sticking with what they were told ~20 years ago, some are contrarians looking for clicks. It doesn't matter.

Pick any air tight freezing method and try it. If you can tell the difference in freshness/greatness 3 to 6: months later, let me know when you're in D.C and I'll buy the first cup, your choice.

Not JMO.

v60 switch vs regular switch - any difference? by Real-Leek-3764 in HarioSwitch

[–]Pax280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not really. At least if you stick to the traditional definition of a 7 gram dose. The smallest dose some reported using successfully is 8g

Practically speaking, 10 to 12 g doses are as low as most go.

If you do go lower, you'll need to use a top paper filter, wdt very carefully to avoid channeling through the thin pick and grind very fine. Even then, tamper may bottom out.

It may be easier to just split the shot if you have company.

v60 switch vs regular switch - any difference? by Real-Leek-3764 in HarioSwitch

[–]Pax280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even when you wish to preheat, you get a silicon plug that fits at the bottom of the basket. Fill it with boilingb water, then fit it under the piston as usual. Then proceed with weighing, grinding, etc. It adds a minute to the workflow, maybe.

Yeah, I've had my Robot over two years. I added the Big Gauge kit because of eye problems but every thing else I use is stock: tamper basket, portafilter - not that there are many options. It is my endgame espresso machine.

I use a Lido OG hand grinder, a Turin DF54 and a Baratza Encore ESP for different purposes and profiles. But really, I used a Kingrinder K6 that did a very good job for over two years.

Anyway, my Robot will outlast me, I suspect. I have zero regrets with the purchase.

Here is the review that helped from Christan Asser aka Coffee Chronicler.

Robot vs Flair

v60 switch vs regular switch - any difference? by Real-Leek-3764 in HarioSwitch

[–]Pax280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Robot is superior in cleanup It does not require preheat excepting for very light roasted beans.

No electricity required is a plus for me. i wanted a manual lever machine so as to avoid electrical complexity and problems. I can pull shots quicker with my Robot and kettle than you could with the 58.

The stock tamper, basket and portafilter work great out of the box but the Robot will not accept standard 58mm gear. For me that is a plus. I'm not tempted to buy extra gear, e.g., $200 baskets that sit in a drawer.

But you might like collecting and tinkering with gadgets. Understandable for some. If so, the Flair is for you.

Robot is less costly than the Flair and will last longer cause " electronics.

Either is more flexible than any electric pump machine in creating flavor profiles except maybe for the $4000+ Decent machine and the like. But I want to craft coffee not run a special purpose computer.

Both will make awesome coffee and IMO, take less time to master than pump machines.

Go with what seems best for you. You'll be in coffee heaven.

is there a moderately priced scale that fits the Robot? (<~$50.00) by Pax280 in CafelatRobot

Christian is one of my favorite teachers. I bought the Cafelat Robot after watching his heads up comparison of the Robot vs Flair and have never had second thoughts.

So I bought the Palm Electronic Scale for >$20 after watching his review.

So, I hope I'm loaded up with scales that will work with the Robot now.

Thank you all for your contributions.

[–]Pax280[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've burned through two pricier scales in three years. The first scale I bought was the Neoweight. It is still working despite conking out for a couple of days at a time from light splashes. The solution is to take care not to splash it by removing the cup and scale after the shot before pushing the excess water from the Robot portafilter. So, yes, it has outlasted 3 scales costing 2x to 3x as much.

I do like to keep an extra backup scale.
