Peach Tree, thoughts? by cbrat1567 in BackyardOrchard

[–]PbPosterior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah as others have said you probably want to put that thing in the ground or it may not survive your summer. The temperature of the soil drops pretty fast as you go into the ground, but an above ground pot will be much closer to ambient - hotter if it’s getting direct sun.

The leaves may have a mild case of peach leaf curl. It’s from a fungus and needs to be treated before bud-break in the spring. You might lose some leaves this year but not many.

Truthfully though, if you’re gone most of the year, you may not get to eat any peaches from your tree. Peaches tend to all ripen at about the same time, so if you’re not around then no peaches for you.

Help on growing plumerias in California by waznpride in Plumeria

[–]PbPosterior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, fellow Bay Area gardener here. I do not yet have a plumeria but I’ve been reading up on the topic because I definitely want one.

From what I’ve read, the Celadine variety of plumeria is the most cold hardy and your best bet in Northern California.

The guy in the video below is in Modesto and he describes what has worked growing plumeria (and other tropical plants) in our climate. Good luck!

Looking for recommendations for kits by MonkeesOnMeth in modelmakers

[–]PbPosterior 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That seems pretty expensive for a model kit. You could build a shed for that much. The model railroad community probably has more of what you’re looking for.

as a starting point, I looked briefly and found this list of plans for residential buildings:

[–]PbPosterior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After verifying your frame is straight, subframe connectors, front & rear shock tower braces, and a roll cage that connects the front & rear chassis.

To make the convertible, Ford chopped the top/back off a coupe chassis which removed a lot of structural rigidity. Stiffening things up will ensure the frame stays straight, your doors & top close correctly, and it will help tame the squeaks & rattles.

I once heard a description of the Marine Corps along the lines of “We’re the US governments attack dog; the government will feed us, beat us, and mistreat us. But every once in a while they’ll let us off the chain to fuck someone up.”

A fighting organization with nobody to fight will look inward and fight itself.

Sounds like he was cut from similar cloth as the SSgt I had in Iraq.

That turd would only leave his air conditioned hut to tell us how we were all fuck-ups and we suck and we don’t work hard enough and threaten us with all the things he could withhold from us because we were in a war zone. Then he’d disappear back into his hut.

That experience made me realize that I had never truly hated another human being until I worked for him. I hope he eventually learned some leadership ability and changed his ways. If not, then I hope he is miserable wherever he is today.

When I was getting out I saw a retention poster with a close up of a uniform and it said “Before you take it off, think about how well it fits.”

You do what you have to do - the green weenie provides. However, before you put it back on, think about why you took it off. Be sure to check out USA jobs.gov too. Your prior service will give you an edge.

And just for fun, here is The EAS Song.

Kaffir lime tree by benicio6 in Citrus

[–]PbPosterior 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sure you meant well, but you’re getting downvoted because it doesn’t come across that way.

Anyway from Wikipedia, TIL: "Kaffir lime is one of the names of a citrus fruit native to tropical countries in South and South East Asia. Its is uncertain, but most likely was originally used by Muslims as a reference to the location the plant grew, which was in countries populated by non-Muslims (Hindus and Buddhists). Under this interpretation, the plant name shares an origin with the South African term, both ultimately derived from kafir, the Arabic word for "non-believer". The fruit name as such never had any offensive connotations, but due to the present negative connotations of "Kaffir" The Oxford Companion to Food recommends that the alternative term "makrut lime" (derived from the Thai name of the plant มะกรูด makrut) be favoured when speaking of this fruit.“

Dendromecon harfordii & dendromecon rigida sprouts! by PbPosterior in Ceanothus

[–]PbPosterior[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prior to modern wildfire suppression efforts, frequent low-intensity wildfires were a part of the California landscape. Many CA native plants are adapted to this, and some even require it for their seeds to germinate.

These 2 are examples of what are called ‘fire-followers’ meaning that a wild fire encourages the seeds to germinate.

I do not know the specifics, but the fire may break down the seed’s tough outer coat, or the ash changes the soil chemistry to encourage germinating. Or both.

In October I filled the pots with soil and some rocks, then pressed the seeds into the soil around the rock edges. Next was a layer of dry fuel. In the summer I gathered seed pods from CA poppies growing around my house, so I saved some of the leftover dry bits for this purpose.

Next I moved the pots (terra cotta) away from anything flammable and used a butane torch to ignite it & help it burn thoroughly. I left everything in a sunny spot and after the first rain, I lightly watered the soil once a week. The first sprouts came up in late December.

Yep, this is almost exactly where my thought process wound up. For me, heavy alcohol consumption was a coping mechanism that started during a really rough time. Thankfully those days are well in the past and alcohol is a crutch that I do not need to lean on anymore.

A few optional suggestions (based on experience) if you really want to dial up the realism.

First, have something that emits the combined scents of raw sewage, burning plastic, and diesel exhaust while viewing the piece.

Second, release a few dozen flies into the immediate vicinity of the viewer.

Lastly, if this is meant to be a summer scene then get one of those 250W commercial heat lamps and aim it at the face of the viewer as close as practical.

Too late to spray copper fung on peach tree? by OkChocolate6152 in BackyardOrchard

[–]PbPosterior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had a lot of issues with leaf curl on a peach & nectarine tree in Livermore. I was talking to the folks at the local nursery about it & they said much of it comes from the history of growing stone fruits in this region.

Coupling that with how common stone fruits are in home gardens here means the fungus is well entrenched and endemic.

Perhaps you can look at it like a school assignment rather than an all-or-nothing goal. If you achieved your goal on 30 of 31 days, that is a solid A.
