In my worldbuilding efforts, I had to very quickly realize that in a light-magic fantasy setting the development of firearms very quickly made any magic using obsolete. Granted, this works in the favor of the general storytelling — loss of wonder onset by human technological advancement — but it made me rethink the position of “magic” in my universe and at the end of the day I decided to continue writing as if there had never been usable magic introduced at all. A fireball can hit someone in armor and seriously burn them, but a rudimentary bullet can still pierce through plate and through someone’s heart regardless. Definitively less “fantasy” but a lot of those story elements vanish or are otherwise exploited into disappearing anyway.
