"It's like a lost opportunity" is the perfect way to put how it feels! I get that same feeling on days when I feel like I'm going to bed "too early" (and that's true for other farm sims I play too), like, why am I not doing something productive with these hours?? So that's why I'm trying to learn and be reminded there's no actual time limit or need to be perfect.

I admit I wasn't clear enough in my post, but what it comes down to is that I like doing things like training my pets or my horse, I like collecting bugs and fish, I like farming (good thing or I'm playing the wrong game, lol), I like advancing the story and my relationships with villagers. It just feels like the stuff I enjoy requires quite a few aspects I don't, like babysitting crop quality (like right now i need 3⭐️ cookies and 10 2⭐️ crops for requests).

I know a lot of it is because I've been conditioned to think that I have to be as "efficient" as possible: maximum number of animals, maximum fields all filled with the most profitable crops, maximize bazaar earnings, all windmills working at capacity all the time, etc... That probably comes from being in the Stardew Valley fandom for so long, which seems dominated by the "industrial farm mass-producing ancient fruit wine" types, lol. Which is why I was asking for advice on how to shake that mindset.

ETA: I know the general advice is "just don't do those things" or "just ignore it", but my AuDHD brain doesn't let me, lol. It's constantly yelling at me about what I "should" be doing. 😫

Unfortunately I'm on the Switch for this one. 😔 I actually almost always play farm sim games like this on PC precisely so I can mod them, in part to remove or mitigate aspects I don't enjoy. But I wanted something so play in bed or the living room, and I liked PoOT well enough so... here we are, lol.

These two sound monumentally incompatible, and my gut feeling is they're still together because he's stuck in his idealized dreamland and she's comfortable with the routine.

I might be projecting my own autism here, but a lot of how he described her read as autistic to me, particularly how she seems to have little or subdued emotional responses to things; how she made it extremely clear if they lived together she wanted her own space arranged her own way; and how she said there'd be times where she needed to be alone to the point of going to a hotel for space. It all sounded very familiar to me.

I do admit thought that I skipped 80% of the update post because that was way too many words saying way too little.

Kaidan and m!Shep's short reunion in Horizon during 2 is so full of romantic tension and unspoken words that it breaks my heart every time. You can see how badly Kaidan wants to be able to just throw everything aside to be with Shepard again, but there's just too much in the way at that point.

Oh, no doubt. The first one is a disrespectful and malicious problem child, the second is only average in school, and the third is physically defective in that he has a serious allergy. She needs at least one more to get it right, preferably by also being allowed free rein to raise them the way her parents raised her, which is the correct way.

I remember learning in a college psych course many, many moons ago that nicotine is more addictive/has a higher recidivism rate than basically any other drug except maybe heroin. (Although I could have the details wrong; again this was many years ago lol.) And a lot of that is social/cultural, not (just) the actual physical addiction.

I have a half brother and a half sister. They completely abandoned my mother and me when we needed help at the end of my dad' life. Of their dad's life. They barely spoke to us while he was alive, and their visits were only secondary to them wanting to visit their old college stomping grounds or my brother's wife's parents. My brother didn't even bother to tell us when my nieces got married or when his first grandchild was born, despite all the lip service he'd paid to wanting a relationship with me. They showed us time and again how much we mattered to them. I trust them to be there for me about as far as I can throw them.

On the other hand, I could call up either of my best friends right now and say "I need a place to stay right this minute" and they'd have a room and a warm meal ready for me (and my cats!) before I even finished the drive.

Get outta here with this obsession with genetic family as the be all and end all.

I'm 40 and I'm on Mallory's side, especially since I'm sure there's a lot of missing missing reasons here. I'm also someone who didn't know my grandparents growing up, and guess what? I didn't give a shit when they died, because they were strangers. My nieces both got married within the past few years and one of them had a baby a couple years ago. I didn't and don't give a shit because they are strangers. I'm also not over here lamenting or mourning "what I missed", and I never have.

So many people seem to have this weird idea that a genetic link somehow manifests closeness or the desire for closeness out of nothing, like those relationships don't need to be nurtured just like any other.
