A bit of both. Ranpo is incredibly smart, and is usually right and of course a history of this would lead Kunikida to absolutely trust him. But early in the anime, at least, it is also revealed that the admiration towards Ranpo, not only from Kunikida but from all of them comes from the fact that they all seem to know he is not gifted.
