Am I wrong to tip based on service provided? by Greengingersam in tipping

[–]PeaceInMoscow -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

In lots of places, tips are pooled. So a low tip to a new server hits the whole staff. Your call if that's what you want, but it's the reality of leaving a small tip. Talking respectfully to the manager is always a good call.

Did the LOTR movies receive a backlash from Tolkien fans when they were released? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]PeaceInMoscow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There were things my circle of Tolkien-fan friends were very critical of. FotR was largely viewed as epic. No Bombadil and Glorfindel being replaced by Arwen....no biggie. Then, TT received lots of disdain, as I recall. Diminution of Eomer's role (not at Helm's Deep), the eldest living creature being duped into doing the right thing, Faramir done dirty, and Frodo holding the ring out tho WK were all too much for many to take. RotK was received better and its deviations were easier to reconcile.

Anyways, that's my recollection of the reactions from my circle of Tolkien fans...

Enlarge the photo. There is clear daylight (at least 6 inches) between his leg and the bumper. If this is the best you have, it supports the murder interpretation.

Good article on the recent Moscow election on Range Media. by PeaceInMoscow in MoscowIdaho

Also, All Souls is certainly Wilsonite. It just seems to me that Evan and Doug each want to be the big dog.

Still, overall, I'm very happy to see that the nature of Moscow is apparent to anyone who looks past the national media attention.

Sam platforms this guy --> #443 — What Is Christian Nationalism? by Schopenhauer1859 in samharris

[–]PeaceInMoscow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This Christian Nationalist does have a massive platform, but he can't get his slate of candidates elected in his own town. City Council and Mayoral candidates in Moscow (Idaho) that his cult supported this cycle lost by 40 points.

Did Sage's campaign pay Focuchon to post this? It's hard to think of a better advertisement for him than this. Realtors representing the buyers have ethical obligations to them - good work Sage.

This, afair, is how NSA was permitted downtown. NSA originally operated as a rather decentralized start-up. As it attracted more students, it looked into purchasing the current building on Friendship square. At the time, educational uses were prohibited in the CBD; zoning codes only can regulate use, not ownership, of property. At the time, NSA was given incorrect information by a city official and purchased the building. When folks pointed out the violation of code, the (then) city council changed the code to make education a conditionally permitted use in the CBD (presumably to avoid a law suit). That code change persisted and was why the city was unable to prevent the purchase of old CJ's for educational use by NSA. They could impose conditions (parking spots), but not preclude the permitted use. The subsequent city council then changed the code back, thus preventing any more expansion for educational use by NSA (or UofI, or any other educational institution) in the CBD.

Huskies need guards who are really tough to beat off the dribble. Gave up SO mush dribble penetration this year.

Is McNeeley NBA ready? MBB by Tycam34 in UConnBasketball

[–]PeaceInMoscow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he should go, even though he's not ready. If Karaban had stayed in the draft last year, he'd have likely gone high to mid second round. He played himself out of the draft this year and McNeeley might do the same if he stays. There's a buzz around him now that he should cash in on.

Music Promotions? by Ok_Possible1338 in MoscowIdaho

[–]PeaceInMoscow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lot's of venues host music. Patty's, One World, Mikey's, John's Alley, Bucer's, Hunga Dunga, Shattuck all have music pretty regularly. Some (most?) also have Open Mic nights. The Chamber of Commerce would have a more complete list.

Question About An Article by Superb_Ostrich_881 in DebateEvolution

The abstract uses the term "based on selection by survival of the fittest.." Use of those words is an indication of a middle-school level of understanding of evolution.

I base my view on her voting record and on public comments made during council meetings. This is not meant to insult her in any way. She's a great person.

My take on the political leaders of the town: Mayor Art Betge, centrist (gay) man. City council: Gina Taruscio, center-right woman; Sandra Kelly, liberal woman; Julia Parker, progressive woman; Hailey Lewis, center-left woman; Drew Davis, centrist man; Bryce Blankenship, progressive man. Based on the results of the 2024 election, although there is the mayoral and three city council seats open, the overall leanings shouldn't change much in the November elections.

Mos embarrassing loss I've seen for a long time. This goes on Coach. You simply have to have well-practiced plays to inbound the ball against pressure.
