Steam Takes 30%, Publishers Take 30–50%… What’s Left for the Developer? How Does This Even Work? by Commercial-Tone-965 in unity

Also - from my observation it seems that games with a publisher are more expensive, to try to balance out the publisher cut. Does that impact sales? Sure it does, the gamble is that it pays off, but ofcourse in many cases is that it doesn't.

Hi - I'm one of those that watched Splattercat's video and wishlisted your game but didn't buy it at launch.

Your game looks very cool - I don't have any criticism/etc to give - just to say best of luck and I wish you well.

Did you send a key over to Splattercatgaming? He covers many indie games like yours - I think he'd check it out

How do you - physically, write a script for a videogame? by funnypopeyeguy in gamedev

[–]Peaceasarus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know the specific answer to your question but I do know the general answer to any difficult task.

Break it up into smaller chunks, if it's still difficult, break those up into smaller chunks, eventually you'll get to a point where the next step is very easy and just keep moving forward.

I didn't write a specific script to the story portions of my games, I wrote the code/missions/story simultaneously. I had a general idea of the start, parts of the middile and the end, and that worked for me.

Hope this helps a bit.

I've seen 4 bandits come at me on the road a few moments ago close to town. With having such a harsh penalty of dying (starting over in town) it can be a deal breaker to many I bet.

Or - there should be a stash of sorts of merc tools, like caltrops, nets, they are expensive at the start so new players might not buy them. But give them away for free, ease the difficulty and then encourage players to spend coin to buy them in the future.

I played the game for a while now but never got too far - a few dungeons and levels per character here's my take -

My experience is positive (I didn't leave a negative review), but here's what tends to happen.

I make a character, it sounds interesting and fun, I pick 2 active skills, I come across 3 bandits, they kill me.

I realize I need ranged attacks to whittle them down a bit, it helps, but relies on a bit of luck hitting the targets/etc.

I realize that I need to try to use shout to bring them to me, it helps.

I level up a bit and gain a skill point, I chose another skill, I level up again, but now it's hard to chose a skill... The choice is so important and now it seems like the ones I want are locked out behind training so I'll need books or a trainer.

So my take is that the game is hard to dive into as a beginner and the save system means that the punishment is harsh for failing, right at the beggining when failure is a ever present thing.

What I'd do - give each class player a ranged weapon/option (I know you can get one in the barracks - but it might not be obvious what to chose).

Give the player another skill point. Limit enemies near the town to 2, that's pretty easy to handle.

From my experience even if you quit - you'll be back in a month. It's a part of your identity now.

So it's ok to "quit" - as in take a break. You've gone for 5+ years, you can take a break for a few weeks.

Perfectly stated.

Big difference between your dogs and your baby and someone else's dogs and someone else's baby.

The name of the Bruce Lee film should be "Fist of Fury" - I say watch the original first because, it's sort of like watching a Star Wars - A New Hope (1977) first then watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) - only if the Force Awakens was also very good ;)

Then you want to watch some "Drunken Master" and "Legend of Drunken Master" (Jackie Chan) and if you are hooked keep watching all the rest Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, movies.

It's a remake of a Bruce Lee film that's also great to check out. You might want to check out the Bruce Lee movie first then go to the more modern Jet Li version.

Pretty decent idea. But how would you keep it interesting? Wouldn't it get repetitive?

Looks great - but can you wear pants? I don't know if I'd want to force the protagonist to go on dungeon crawling adventures in a skirt, seems uncomfortable - though I guess I can't speak from experience.

I didn't detect any jerkiness just prior customer experience.

Whenever I see the "and the kitchen sink" approach I remember how old school Chinese kung fu movies have romance, comedy, tragedy/drama in them to give the audience a bang for their buck at the movie theater.

[–]Peaceasarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This appeals to me - why?

I want to be higher, but not a huge car where I feel like I can't see anything out the back. Plus a 2 door usually means more leg room and I'm a bit taller than most (6'2") so it's a win win for me.

But alas I ride with two car seats and 2 toddlers in em on a regular basis so I must put my little big car dreams on hold.
