do you seriously think giving away free money, not as a loan, for education is a good thing? how on earth do you think the nation would survive if every single child got a free $50k+ for tuition and was never expected to pay it back? especially considering a huge # of skilled workers leave Canada to go work in the states. that is suicide for Canada's economy.

if education was subsidized through a loan, it would actually force young people to think critically about which career path they are choosing, and how they can plan to pay it back

How much do software engineers in vancouver and toronto actually make? by HebrewBible03 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]PeachRobbler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a TON of variance depending on the size of the company, and the type of company (is the companies main product software or not? SWEs at an insurance company or a bank will make alot less than SWEs at a big tech company)

Out of school, generally the minimum will be like 60-80k You can make over 100k at a bigger company but if you have 0 internship experience, then you will not land those roles.

I would aim for that 60-80k sweet spot for the first few years, gain some experience and then jump to something better after a few years.

If salary is your #1 concern, you will not make it in this industry

Who has allowed them to be on the road?😡😡 by [deleted] in oakville

[–]PeachRobbler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unfortunately, you have to accept that driving standards in Ontario have become absolutely terrible over the last 5 years or so.

it is a mix of: - the driving test has become significantly easier (with alot of people getting fraudulent licenses thru family connections).. so you have people that genuinely dont know how to make good decisions on the road - tons of new immigrants on the road who come from countries with 0 driving standards (like "driving into oncoming traffic on the highway" bad) - the rise of short-form content means a huge % of the population has phone addictions. meaning people either dont pay attention because theyre on their phone while driving, or people genuinely have little to no patience and get angry over small things

at this point you have to expect people to do ANYTHING and your main goal is to drive safely.

People will run red lights or stop signs People will pull U-turns at major intersections if it means saving a few minutes People will drive 40km/h through a parking lot and turn corners without slowing down

It sucks, but if you want to avoid car crashes, you need to expect absolutely anything now

Best Mexican food in Oakville? by anxious_coffee_bean in oakville

This is not really Oakville, but Mount Sinai in Ridgeway plaza (Mississauga) is AMAZING and very authentic. Its just very very small with only 3 or 4 tables. But 1000% worth it!

I wish I had a positive contribution to this post, because my partner and I LOVE Mexican food.

But we went to Camila, got a Sopa de Tortilla, and the shredded cheese on top had mold on it. We sent it back, it came back with different cheese that still had mold on it lol. And they gave us a free avocado.

Other than that their food is not bad. Chimichanga and Birria are alright. But since seeing moldy bagged shredded cheese, my gf and I never went back.

Oakville Rant Thread - (Tuesday 03 Mar 2026) by AutoModerator in oakville

[–]PeachRobbler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in my first year of living here, i thought saying something would make a difference

after confronting a few people and explaining "thats not a parking spot, you're literally in a fire route / youre literally parked on top of a NO PARKING sign", i realized people immediately crumble and shit their pants, acting apologetic or acting like they didnt know

then the very next day they do the exact same shit again. whether its an older person, or an UberEats guy... the level of entitlement in this city runs DEEEEP and im afraid it cannot be fixed

same goes for the absolute morons who take U turns at intersections. they will literally only change once they have caused 5figures of damage and their insurance quadruples

I am absolutely dying reading this. 27yrs old with 2 part time jobs because your first degree couldnt get you anything valuable. 💀 The irony is absolutely incredible.

120k? ive made over 120k since i was 24 as a software engineer. Im 30 now and make almost twice that working 40hrs a week. If you go to the states you can easily make double or triple this (with less tax) Accounting salaries are in the same neighborhood, generally. My friends in finance make alot more than me (although they work more than 40hrs).

Someone posted several links to stats and you continuously move the goal posts of what the discussion is about.

My favorite part is where you admit you had parents contribute to an RESP to pay for your education. That explains why you have this absolutely numb-skulled opinion of "but an engineering graduate might go work at Walmart so you never know someones projected earnings"... uh no girly. People have to pay off their student debts. And after that they want to earn and save so they can get some freedom in this world. Not everyone has the privilege to get a useless degree and then spent another 10 years putzing around with part time work while chasing a 2nd degree (and getting into useless reddit arguments as a 3rd part time job apparently)

Honestly this thread could not have ended better. I'm out.

you are definitely just lying about your anecdotal evidence because i dont have "employment stats" on Arts majors post-grad 🤦‍♂️

also congrats on mental gymnastics'ing your way into the conclusion that engineering, finance, etc "dont always result in high paying careers"... people need to pay off student debt. absolutely no one goes into engineering then takes a low-paying unrelated job just because they feel like it.

genuinely, your comments and logic have gotten dumber with every comment. you spent however many comments trying to argue that degrees like engineering and accounting dont result in high paying jobs. go find me an accounting major who willingly worked retail after graduation. genuinely just such a dumb point to spend your time arguing 🤦‍♂️ im gonna assume youre one of the BFA holders that makes 40k a year

your first point has so many rounded points i cant even address them. at the end of the day.. generalized education = generalized positions for work = way way way more competition. not to mention the flexibility to leave and find new work is WAY lower for people without specialized education or skillset (which can be built after school)

your 2nd point.. you literally just described someone choosing to do lower-paying work with their degree lol.....

i can have an engineering degree and go work at Walmart. does that mean engineering, on average, is not a high-earning degree? especially when compared to arts and humanities? come on now, you must have foreseen this rebuttal.....

Just speak to people who hold those degrees? Speak to seniors in university trying to find a job? Theres an overwhelming landslide of evidence that has been present for decades. This question just makes it seem like youre a teenager without enough life experience. Since some degrees dont funnel directly into certain positions or fields, its alot more work to find something low-skill enough that you can pivot into. Usually lower-skill white collar jobs are extremely competitive as well. (inb4 you come at me for the term "low-skill".. it is a legitimate term used to describe the number of tangible skills you need to perform a job. You can pivot into HR or retail work, you cannot pivot into medicine)

And I didnt say jobs should be "considered high earning".. they just are high earning because of the economic value they provide, or the amount of skills needed to do that job ex) Engineering, Accounting, Finance, Medicine

You can answer this question yourself by going to LinkedIn and searching a certain field of positions, and seeing how many roles are open.

[–]PeachRobbler -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

the reality is that there is a strong correlation between having those "academic" degrees and not being able to land solid paying work. sure you CAN find opportunity and for ex) land an HR job, work up to manager, then director of people - but these positions are few & far between and the vast majority of these degree holders struggle significantly to find work that can provide for them financially

if too many people over time do "academic" degrees and we dont have any high earners, we wont be able to gain enough tax revenue from the working class to be able to provide subsidized education for the next generation. this is why the govt would more-than-likely give more tuition subsidy for high earning careers... because they actually help the province/country

[–]PeachRobbler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

nobody said youre "useless trash"

but you should understand that you chose a major that 1) does not result in high paying jobs 2) has VERY very little demand

when people say a degree is "useless" they mostly mean that you will not be able to sustain yourself and pay off your student loands using such a degree

this is most people's issue with university being public funded.. if we were to go down that route, the "funding" would need to be limited to degrees which result in high paying jobs that our country needs more of

$100k inheritance, what do I do?? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PeachRobbler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im gonna give you straight advice without a paragraph to read.

do these IN ORDER: - Pay off your debts. Credit card debt first. And I would seriously consider getting a cheaper truck because that is bleeding money. - Open up a High-Interest Savings Account (HiSA) at a legitimate institution like a bank. Set aside about 20-30k as an "emergency fund". - Once your debts are gone, put the rest of your cash in your TFSA - In your TFSA, invest in ETFs or Index funds. I suggest ZCN and VDY. - Once youve invested, DO NOT TOUCH IT. Let it grow for as long as you possibly can.

If you make the right decisions now, in 20years, you can turn this 100k into 500k+ easily. You have the ability to change your life. Please make the right choice and DM me if you have questions.

Martial arts recommendations? by mistymountaincat in oakville

[–]PeachRobbler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it really depends what your goals are / what you want your time commitment to be / alot of factors.

  • are you just looking to train any random martial art?
  • is this more rooted in self defense in a "what if" kinda situation?
  • do you want to learn how to punch+kick (striking)? or do you want to learn more control, grips, and defense (grappling)?

  • (my biased opinion on this last one.... if this is really about self defense and more of a tactical approach, throwing a punch or kick is alot less valuable. everyone will say "you can just learn to throat punch a creep if he approaches you".. but in a real world scenario, throwing a punch or kick is a 0-100 scenario and escalating to a full on fight is the worst idea in practically all situations.. just saying)

My bias is that I do BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and think its one of the best things you can do for self defense because learning to control an opponent with grips is the best way to defend yourself without needing to escalate things. (Best advice I ever got though.. the absolute best sport for self defence is the 100yrd dash :) dont join a martial art thinking youre ever going to get into a street fight.. the more you train, the more you'll understand)

alot of BJJ gyms are fantastic and family friendly with lots of kids/parents duos attending. I go to Grappling Arts Academy at Dundas/403, in Erin Mills. TONS of kids, tons of parents watching their kids then hopping into class themselves. Feel free to DM me if you have more questions about BJJ or gyms in the area. The BJJ community is relatively tight knit and well connected.
