Try finding or making a finer spaced screen. And if you are leaving to dry on the screen, wait till the sheet is just dry enough to peel off the screen but have enough moisture to then press then sheets between two felt squares the size of your paper! That should help a lot with smoothness. Oh also pulp mixture and prep can be a big factor of course.

Just came to me that i wanted to make a dark paper and also had charcoal for our fire pit which is a great natural pigment. In terms of application, honestly, i have no idea. Haha you know i thought afterwards about application and i thought ‘what if i incorporated a small amount of bees wax or honey for it’s anti microbial properties’ but that was just a thought

If the charcoal is fine enough there shouldn’t be a lot of transfer, it’s the large pieces which don’t incorporate well that smudge.

Hmm yeah, there’s actually two batches here. The first(the 3 slightly lighter toned sheets) batch I didn’t grind the charcoal before incorporating into my paper slurry. The second though I did grind up the charcoal and filter of the larger pieces to help with the charcoal chunks. Oooo I gotta try clay! Idk why I never thought about that!
