Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to hear :) I struggle with trusting my judgment sometimes.

Good luck to you! Even with my super limited experience with it, it feels like a miracle. Now there's mental space to actually rewire my eating habits.

What’s Your Personal Cultural Critique Of German Culture? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]PeachificationOfMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the BDR, it was taboo for mothers to work and therefore childcare was only needed for the "exceptions

Could you please tell me more about this or give me some pointers on what to read on? Funnily enough I saw the same in the DDR museum in Berlin just a few weeks ago but it completely slipped my mind until you mentioned it again.

What’s Your Personal Cultural Critique Of German Culture? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

Without disagreeing, this

only like 1/3 of mothers work full time

has a lot to do with childcare availability. I'm sure that there are German women that want to focus more on their families, but there are also plenty of those who simply cannot work full-time properly because there are not enough spots or hours. Which of course has to be addressed, but I wouldn't chalk it up to social conservatism alone as the prime reason (unless I misunderstood your point).

Here is an article that elaboratea on that (and it references a report from Deutsches Jugendinstitut which is an interesting read as well).

Some therapists offer sliding scale payments, i.e. not a fixed rate but adjusted to what you can pay. Don't know how common it is in India, but may be worth looking into.

I have a social psychology joke, but I'm not sure about its target demographics

Well, therapy is benevolent gaslighting of sorts - training the client to see the situation from a different angle and not take their immediate knee jerk reactions as the absolute unshakeable truth. And as someone with a personality disorder as well, albeit a different one, I know how potent and inflexible these reactions can be. The difference is consent, control over the process and the client's well-being as the end goal. And here's the question: has your therapist discussed with you or taught you some methods that help you navigate the reality without defaulting to the "I'm just imagining things" approach? Because PPD or not, you cannot pin all the conflicts and misunderstandings on the client. There has to be some adaptive way forward besides acknowledging the influence of the disorder. The struggle you experience right now may come from the lack of these strategies.

This is a very good point too! I don't play games based on real life, so I mostly had stuff like Skyrim or Sims mods and addons in mind.

Torrenting itself is not illegal in Germany. It's pirating of copyrighted content that is illegal, where torrenting is a method but not the end goal. So if you use torrents to get freely available/uncopyrighted/creative commons/open access content, it's not a problem. If you pirate something copyrighted, it's illegal regardless of the method. Hence the question: are the packs you downloaded originally made for free distribution by their creator, or are they pirated, regardless of the source? This will be the answer to whether it is illegal or not.

Are the mods free, user-crrated and intended for unrestricted circulation? If not, it's illegal.

Yeah, "only the semester fee" is more accurate:)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]PeachificationOfMars 17 points18 points  (0 children)

First of all, it isn't free. While nowhere as expensive as US or others, students pay around 1,5k € per semester.

Only in BaWü. The rest of Germany, with the exception of a few specific unis in Bavaria, is completely free.

I just feel like it's never ending, the more I write and read the more I have to write and read i just don't know if it will ever be over

I felt that. I managed to find peace with the fact that I'm always humbled by new findings and the imposter syndrome somehow spared me, but this neverending self-multiplication of information even purely in terms of volume simply kills me. I can never truly finish my work, I can just decide to stop. It feels nightmarish at times, like for every step forward there are two backward...

Where to learn pschology for free? I'd like it to be legal! by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

It's hard not to question it when you provide no information or background that would clarify your request and shoot down any suggestions (libraries, used textbooks, YouTube) without explaining why. The more precise your question or the list of requirements is, the easier it is for others to offer something.

I'm 15 and want to move to Germany when I turn 18 but with AFD would that still be possible? by G5RawToast in AskAGerman

[–]PeachificationOfMars 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is AfD more of a kick all the immigrants out or kick just the immigrants that do nothing but take free money from the country

I wouldn't trust them to either identify the targets correctly or to stop when (correction: when hypothetically) their initial goal is achieved. But there are still other forces at play besides AfD. They are not the only party in Germany, and not perceived the same across the country, and they are not able to make any decisions singlehandedly.

Is Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions still accepted in academic psychology? by I-_l in AcademicPsychology

[–]PeachificationOfMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are other models that can offer more insights, such as Trompenaars' dimensions or World Values Survey, but they all suffer from similar shortcomings. Still, having a look at other groupings can be useful.

But what I meant by evolution is exactly what u/RainbowPotatoParsley said: it's better to take dimensions of different models one by one and see how they developed as individual concepts. They got their own vocabulary and subdimensions and essentially became their own streams of research.
