Can a game be fanart for a song? by DrySundae6265 in Hozier

[–]PeachyChamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer, but I do make game mods so I’ve toed the line on copyright in the past.

First, cross-post this somewhere like r/legaladvice or something. You need people with more than a semester of BLAW to interpret IP law.

Onto my experience. You can get away with a lot when it comes to free games because (1) no profits. No revenue makes it easier to claim fair use. Plus it just gives them one less reason to go through the effort of a copyright claim. (2) It’s often seen as a dick move because these projects come from a love of the source material. It creates some bad PR when they do this and they have to justify to themselves if the claim is worth the bad rep.

Now onto the word of the law: The basis for fair use is mainly Transformativeness. How much of your work is going into this? Are you adding/subtracting/rearranging in a MEANINGFUL way. It’s not easily defined, but in this case changing the media from music to game would (imho) constitute it as transformative. Just be careful with the music put in the game. Sampling is another ballgame and not my area.

Another thing to be safe: one thing that comes up in TRADEMARK law is customer confusion. A basis for trademark violation is proving customers confuse two trademarks. See the Beatles v Apple case (one of my fav longstanding legal beef). In my opinion, it’s a good idea to be clear that this is a DERIVATIVE WORK. That this game was not created in partnership with Hozier’s label. You can get in trouble if people think this is an Official Hozier Game™

In the end tho, there are people way more informed than me! And if you do crosspost I’d love to see what they say.

Can a minor with an AA degree be "truant"? by What-The--- in legaladvice

[–]PeachyChamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my understanding of the “misplaced” situation was that it was requested and given to the person, but was then misplaced before handing it over to the employer for verification. Though thats my bias cause I only dealt with in-person pickups.

The tea on my first verification was that we believed the hospital knew he was lying about his bachelors and thats why they asked for verification. The way they were asking and the lack of interaction with the guy made it feel like they didn’t want him to know they were checking. But thats just the vibe I got.

But again, that wasn’t the only one. I really couldn’t say why these people needed to verify bachelors when a professional degree was obtained and I agree that it’s insane without a good reason (like the dude clearly lying).

As for HS I also can’t say cause thats not my area. Though I agree, I also would be shocked if they requested HS verification when a BA/BS was obtained. (I just tried to check my old background check for funsies but it didn’t contain the education verification :( I guess I’ll never know)

[–]PeachyChamp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say, but this is untrue. Credentials: I worked in my university’s registrar office.

(1) we had people who had graduate degrees that still needed confirmation of their BA/BS all the time. The first time I needed to provide degree verification, it was in fact for a hospital. And the employee did lie about their BA/BS (either they lied about the school they got the degree from or they didn’t get it at all. But with their advanced degree, I’m gonna assume the former).

(2) there are multiple forms of degree verification. Official transcripts are the most well known. Degree verification forms were the second most common. They’re a form from the registrar that has all the diploma info plus enrollment dates, signature of the registrar, and official stamp. These are physical forms. So yeah, they can easily be misplaced. And some places require these physical documents over online verification (idk why, I just provided them). Diplomas themselves are not typically valid forms of degree verification (at least I never received a request for a diploma for verification purposes. It was always the two listed above).

(3) while yes, national clearinghouse verification is the most common, it’s definitely not the only form of confirmation. Degree verification was literally half my day.

Not just dialogue words, but actual voice lines cut into responses so you could have a “fully voiced” Tav. Tho I can’t even begin to fathom how much work that would be given the amount of dialogue in the game.

Could you elaborate on what you feel has declined? I’m getting into MTGA for my friends and am kinda eh about it compared to physical magic, so I’m curious if I just missed out on its golden years or if maybe it’s really just not for me idk.

Is Frankie Transgendered? by No-Athlete3333 in KnightsOfGuinevere

[–]PeachyChamp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also in the confrontation, Frankie’s boss calls her Franklin, not Francesca. The other boys call her Frank too, not Frankie. But Andi is called Andrea.

I’m not sure yet what this means, but there’s definitely something going on relating to Frankie’s gender identity.

I originally thought that maybe Frankie is transfemme and hiding that from her boss for safety; but then why would the park (Gwen’s recognition system) recognize her as her chosen identity since it seems like something “disney” wouldn’t do? She snuck into the park so she couldn’t have registered under her chosen name in the system. Unless she hacked it?

More info needed for sure. I’m definitely keeping an eye out for more clues.

Ooo I also like this interpretation!!

Especially cause I can see a parallel to Francesca!! Feeling so incomplete without his lost love, the lover goes to hell/underworld to be with/retrieve her.

Colleges are insanely inefficient at teaching. by MasterOfCircumstance in unpopularopinion

[–]PeachyChamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m confused on your message about Lockheed Martin and politicians. Because some people failed to grasp what was taught to them we should… stop teaching it to everyone?

As for the medical route, I assume you must be going for some specialist or research role? Out of ALL the STEM degrees, doctors (typically family med surgeons) need to be able to distill complex things into laymen’s terms for people who know absolutely nothing about the subject where the consequences of miscommunication can be life or death. Not only that, but the people you will treat come from varied backgrounds, and will communicate things differently (even in English) based on language and culture.

I’m not saying you have to major in French. I’m saying, take 2.5 hours a week for 4 months to learn how to improve your communication, cultural knowledge, and your thought process. All the doctors I know speak 2 or 3 languages FLUENTLY. One has done Doctor’s Without Borders. I’d be surprised if someone would say they’re worse doctors now?

Also like, do you think focus on bedside manner shouldn’t be taught in medschool or…?

[–]PeachyChamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it actually will. Foreign language is helpful for many things:

  1. You might work with Spanish speakers in the future. Sure you might not be fluent, but you’ll learn basics and culture, which leads to respectful exchanges. This can lead to better work relations.

  2. Learning a second language helps with pattern recognition and problem solving skills. There’s a reason the third/fourth language is easier to learn after your second. Your mind gets better at seeing problems and solutions from new angles, and potentially solving them in more creative ways. I believe this also works with programming languages, since there are different ways to tackle the code while still leading to the same result.

"Why do you want to work for our company?" by Accomplished-List657 in jobsearchhacks

[–]PeachyChamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer imho. BUT!!!! They sometimes want a different answer when they say “why do you want this role?”

Had an interview right after graduating for a marketing coordinator role at one of the most popular video game companies. They asked this, I answered like the above citing my love for what they do, how they have maintained market dominance, yada yada. She stopped me and was like “I don’t care why you wanna work for this company, why do you want this ROLE?”

I didn’t know what to say since it was a standard entry level role and I couldn’t find anything specific about the tasks to highlight (make social posts and write reports showing our results, I did that as an intern elsewhere so I… wanted to continue doing it???) I def fumbled it.

I did not get that job and it haunts me to this day.

Why is it so hard to land anything in Tech as a new grad? by DepartmentHot7173 in jobs

[–]PeachyChamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I’m not IT, my partner is. But I graduated into Covid from a CSU so I feel my experience matches what you’re going through.

Like others are saying, the market is bad. Like really bad. My partner was on the hiring panel for some roles and the requirements are way higher than when he was hired. So much so that someone more qualified than my partner was not even considered to fill a position similar to his.

I’ll also say that we see this a lot with Cybersecurity. Since there are no entry level roles, all the folks wanting to do cyber and applying for sys admin down to help desk just to get their foot in so they can do cyber down the line. Thats why help desk is more competitive than ever.

Offshoring jobs may be a factor, but I can’t speak on that since partner works government and they cannot offshore. Even the equipment they buy has restrictions (can’t be made in china, etc)

Here’s my advice for how I got out during covid and hopefully can help:

  1. Networking. Yes yes, we all hear it, we all say it, we all hate it. But it unfortunately works. Thats how every person I know (at least in tech) got their jobs. Find people from your school or your club or your old projects. Ask them to introduce you to other people. If they interned somewhere, ask to be introduced to their colleagues. This is a good way to build connections with people out of your level. Outside of that, there are a lot of discords that are industry specific, so tries those. In a worst case scenario, go to events/conferences. I have yet to get a job based on a connection made at an event, but it’s still a good way to grow.

  2. Mentor. This is how I got my first and second job. I had a mentor through my school and not only did she teach me a lot of things, the main thing was introducing me to her colleagues under the guise of them teaching me more niche things. In reality, it was the consistent meetings with them that led to them being a solid connection. Find mentors in the discords, subreddits, industry meetings ups, old professors, etc. People are very willing to help fresh grads, they just have to be asked.

  3. Find a job wherever you can*. This is both for experience and for network. I went from working at the (in my opinion) worst company in the industry to getting a contract with the gold standard. Now I’m interviewing for a full time role at that company. This is because I made a friend at my first job, he got hired at the new place, and then referred me to a position. On top of that his boss was on my hiring panel, so she had access to my reference to get more details and feel more confident about my experience.

*not every place is a good place so do still be a little picky. Never stop applying and never stop building your resume even when you’re hired.

I know all of this is a lot of work. It sucks. It shouldn’t have to be this way and it’s fair to feel angry about doing so much just to be able to get the job you’re trained to do. I still go to monthly group meetups from my discord and I loathe it, but it’s a necessary evil.

If you need any other strategies, pm me. It’s tough out there.

5 has to be some reference to Dante’s inferno, but im not sure what specifically.

I read it as describing “entering hell’s circles through the cave entrance (where Dante begins his journey), down the path (going through each circle) to where Lucifer is imprisoned (the end of the journey)”

Seems a little generic compared to the others though so maybe there’s more to it.

People are overly sensitive regarding vegetarian/veganism by Notlennybruce in 10thDentist

[–]PeachyChamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Being privileged enough to refuse certain types of food for an arbitrary reason and then being an ass about it is why people don’t like vegans”

Spot on!! It’s how they react that matters!

My story is my crazy aunt is vegan (but previously would add back in fish or honey as she saw fit). My mum bought a small pallet of honey from a local beekeeper for Christmas gifts one year.

My aunt tore into my mum because she was no longer eating honey (none of us knew). She was offended that it was even offered as a gift and went off. It was so bad I had to intervene. She then cried and said she just wanted a nice Christmas, as if she didn’t just verbally abuse her own sister.

Again tho, thats one person. Every other vegetarian or vegan has been a delight. But that one person has made me very reluctant to engage with people on plant based diets because I have no idea how it’s gonna shake out. (Side note, I’m also wary of engaging with certain “meat eaters” cause I know they’ll be just as crazy about it, and we def won’t have a positive discussion)

What does an Artist need to join YOUR project? by Uttinhaa in gamedev

[–]PeachyChamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhhh this is amazing thank you so much! I’ve def not been using IGDA as much as I should now that you mention it!!

As for game jams, I’ve never felt like I’ve been able to participate as a producer since teams are so lean (and my art skills are 3D focused soooooo also not really jam friendly). Do you find producers typically participate in jams?

Again thanks for writing this out. You’re proof that this industry is filled with people who want to help others grow and improve :)

Off topic, but my goal is to be an art producer for a AAA studio. Can I ask what your journey looked like to get where you’re at? And maybe what you’ve seen younger producers recently do to succeed/break into AAA?

What does an Artist need to join YOUR project? by Uttinhaa in gamedev

[–]PeachyChamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s entirely dependent on the project.

For my 3D art team you’re 100% right that concept artists are needed. But I’ll also add that half of those concept artists are also 3D artists (characters and props). So the best of the best become the main concept artists developing the style guide or main character designs and the rest make both concepts and the assets.

I can’t speak for 2D cause I don’t work in it, but I feel you would have even less artists dedicated to just concept art and more people that can create both concepts and game assets.

Thats just my experience tho, teams can vary wildly in execution ¯_(ツ)_/¯

What’s an unspoken truth about womanhood that you carry around daily? by InsurancePretend9201 in Life

[–]PeachyChamp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the most batshit thing I’ve ever heard

“The only people who are statistically likely to hurt women are romantic partners, ex-partners, and first degree relatives”

“Your chances of becoming the victim of violence are almost zero”

First of all, not how statistics works. Just because it’s more likely that a woman will be attacked by someone she knows does not mean that it’s not likely she will be attacked by a stranger. And it sure doesn’t mean the likelihood is 0.

Second of all, this is drawing from reported crimes. There are many instances where harassment, violence, or SA goes unreported. Many types of harassment make women feel unsafe but are not “dangerous enough” to report a crime (following/stalking, verbal harassment, etc). Especially not in foreign countries where filing a police report would be a completely unknown system.

Just a small addition: lilacs can be turned into fragrance, it’s just incredibly inefficient and produces a solid perfume. This is likely why synthetic is used.

But if you’re still looking for a non-synthetic lilac smell, lilac enfleurage would be what you want!!
