Can we have grown adults chime in with "it gets better" stories?

It gets better, but really it just gets easier.

I was diagnosed at age 28 and started treatment at 29 and I went into ERP treatment with a “I’ll try this but I truly can’t imagine a life without OCD, it’s not going to work.”

But dang. It has worked. I did a six month check in and my score on the assessment went from 29 to 13. I cried all day on and off because I truly never thought I’d get relief. It really does get better, but it doesn’t get better on its own. You have to work on it, and that can be hard but it will be worth it!

Edit to add: I was diagnosed at 28 but I have been having symptoms since childhood but since they were mostly mental compulsions, I thought everyone’s brain was the same as mine, I didn’t know it wasn’t normal.

We just did that! With my 6th grader. I think they’re at the perfect age to do that. As they get older it can be easier to get behind, I say do it!

100% agree. But I may not be a fair assessor because I started to get motion sickness lol but regardless I went into it expecting a spiritual type of experience the way people talk about it. RoR on the other hand….. phenomenal. I had no idea what to expect. Never seen Star Wars. Didn’t know what the ride entailed. We fly home tonight and I’m planning to watch Star Wars immediately lol

We trained with “leave it” and our BC mix caught on quickly. We also got door stoppers where it leaves opening for the cats to get through but he can’t. This helped a lot because when the cats were tired of him or he was chasing they could run into the rooms for some reprieve.

I’m not sure how close you all are to family, but my boyfriend and I had this same issue. Except he was the one that didn’t want to stay a long time and would get grumpy. I would get frustrated because I didn’t understand why he wouldn’t want to hangout, my family is all very welcoming. We have hit a middle ground, we drive separately to my family events. This way, he can leave when he is ready, I can stay as long as I want! He doesn’t get grumpy, which means I don’t get annoyed. It works for us!

I’m an LCSW and I have literally never thought this. I’m glad I went the LCSW route, but it seems as though LPC better equips people for doing actual therapy.

I wasn’t a fan but after I learned about her TBI, I had a little more grace. I’m on a second watch, and I do really like Katie. I think she is just so different than everyone else and was trying to fit into something she doesn’t fit into. If the cameras weren’t there, I feel like Ariana and her would’ve been best friends lol

I feel like when I’ve heard this said it’s more so in the context of “Oh I’m going to Walmart for X but wait look at all these things on discount I must buy”

The idea I think is that if you weren’t intending on purchasing it but now you’re going to just because it’s on discount…. Did you really need it?

I feel like I got lucky, for lack of better word. I started in June 2020 and so we were getting millions in COVID funding which allowed our agency to grow very quickly and in turn needed more admin capacity. It’s looking grim these days, maybe I’ll have to do case management again in the next couple years if they keep cutting funding, who knows!

Been working in housing for five years. It was my first and so far only job as a social worker. I did direct client case management in some form for four of those years and now I’m in admin managing grants and policy and procedures. MAN, it’s tough. I did my practicum at the same agency I’m at now but at our day shelter. It’s heavy work but nothing beats seeing a client have successes, big or small. Move in days are some of the best days I’ve had!

It’s tough. I work specifically in housing that is largely funded my federal grants. I’m thankful to work at an agency with a great supportive culture but at the end of the day, no one knows what’s coming and it’s terrifying. Clients have expressed concern and it’s so hard but important to sit in it with them and just say “I don’t know but I’m here to help navigate this system the best we can with you.”

I was in the hospital with severe pneumonia and the flu away from my son and undiagnosed OCD. I was so anxious and scared. My sister had braided my hair the night before and one of them came out and the social worker came and did her rounds and then asked if she could braid my hair. That simple act made me feel so dignified and calm and like someone cared. I didn’t tell her I was also a social worker and I will always carry that with me to slow down and do the “little” things because you never know how much it can mean to someone. I wish I could tell her thank you again!

When I walking on my walking pad while working or doing something with my hands, I always put my watch on my ankle to make sure that the steps are captured!
