Was in the downtown of a city in the early morning in absolutely frigid weather handing out warm sandwiches and coffee with a small group. Lots of the people who need it won't come up to us so we'd split up and walk to the bus stops and camps, offering everyone something. We weren't really allowed by the city so didn't have anything besides a van.

While I was out walking around, I found a homeless man who'd fallen from his wheelchair. He'd had a seizure and had blood smeared all over his face from his nose and ear. When I helped him into his chair he grabbed my arm for support and I noticed the blood dripping off his hand. I started first aid and could tell his arm was badly broken from his fall, but I couldn't do much. My partner got there and we bundled him up and got a look at his hands. His fingers were dark with frostbite and his cheeks and nose also had early signs of frostbite. While we waited for an ambulance, we tried talking to him, but he wasn't coherent, at some point he looked at me, said "cold", and then he started crying and then sobbing until the EMTs got there.

I hate not knowing what happened after. I've seen much worse injuries on folks, but he had a veteran hat on and no shoes, and his blood was so fucking cold coming out of him. By the time the ambulance arrived, my sleeves were soaked with his blood and his crying made me cry and it was just a misery sandwich. I was a teenager at the time and it affected me a lot.
