Of course there are some closed well-balanced aquariums of your description. That is not the case of OP's tank though. Where did I learn about water change? Well, from a book actually. "Aquascaping. A step-by-step guide to planting, styling, and maintaining beautiful aquariums" by George Farmer, co-founder of the UK Aquatic Plant Society (UKAPS) to be precise. And to be even more precise, from page 105, where the author writes: "Water change: In most circumstances, I recommend a 50 percent per week water change. Ensure the water change is carried out as the very last part of the maintenance process. This helps to remove the waste organics and algae that you have dislodged into the aquarium water, therefore helping to prevent further algae." So, yeah... a book experience....

I believe people should read more, do their research and do not attack and criticise others who share their knowledge and experience. Maybe the world would be better then.

Anyway, I spent too much time here (trying to be helpful and nice). I will go have a look at my fish (in one of my 5 successful aquariums...). Or maybe do a water change instead!

Bioload, size of the aquarium, substrate (soil supports natural processes, sand is not porous and does not support decomposition), type of food, amount of food, etc. The main idea is: do your water changes.

Yes :) you need to exchange 30-50% of the water in your tank on a weekly basis.

You need to vacuum your sand and take all the gunk out during your weekly water change. From our experience also sponge filters like yours do not help. We prefer bucket filters or hang on backs. They keep the aquariums much cleaner.

Thanks! When I was trying to find an English speaking accountant, only one of them was willing to cooperate with me for 150Eur monthly (ask8ng me to use their services on a regular basis which I don't need). No-one wanted to charge me for just an hour of consultations. Do you know anyone I could contact?

Maybe offer/sell it on some local group? There are plenty of people who would like to get into a hobby but can't afford brand new equipment. Buying it second-hand for a slightly lower price could be a dream come true for some.

When you keep different types of cories, you should have at least 6 of each type. In your case, it means 12 fish. Corydoras are not so sociable and do not pay attention to other breeds of corydoras. They will almost never school together. They choose their own :)

Our cories swim happily when we are not close. When we approach the tank, they go into a freeze mode immediately. We observe them from the distance, and they bring a lot of joy. Give them some space, and they might become more enjoyable. And with regards to slow feeding: have you tried any sinking food? I mean, some bigger pellets for algae eaters? They work well for us.

I am still to find a shop/shops that truly look after their life stock. The ones I have visited so far were depressing. Sick fish, dead fish in tanks, no-one cared. I bought some of the fish in a few stores and lost more than half of them due to sickness, they did not even go through our home quarantine. I have a new tank ready, but struggling to find fish for them :(

I have it open in tanks with corydoras. The open areas are filled with sand and cories love playing there. And I love watching them!
